The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. K ing Charles II took yet another mistress in 1670. She was a dark-haired beauty from Brittany in France. She bore him a son two years later, and he made her the Duchess of Portsmouth. The Duchess was the King's clear favorite. Some wondered if she might not be a French spy in the English court. By now a scientific question was gathering importance. This was the age of navigation. European ships were ranging the oceans. It was easy enough for navigators to fix their latitude. But no one knew how to find their ship's longitude. That was the uncertainty that almost killed Columbus, 180 years earlier. The King had recently created the Royal Society to advance science. Now the Society urged him to build an observatory. We needed better astronomical data to solve the longitude problem. The proposal was foundering in red tape. Then the Duchess produced a friend from Brittany. He was an amateur astronomer named St Pierre. Once in the English Court, he claimed he could calculate longitudes.

Uranus had been seen in prediscovery observation on several ("almost" 20, according to John North) occasions, but all those observers assumed it was just another star. The earliest known record is an observation by John Flamsteed 1690, who cataloged it as star "34 Tauri". Later, Bradley had seen it, Tobias Meyer had seen it in 1756, and Le Monnier had observed it on a number of occasions between 1750 and 1771. (Uranus was discovered 1781 by William Herschel) Neptune had been seen in prediscovery observations by Galileo of December 1612 and by Challis when checking John Couch Adams' prediction 1845. (Neptune was discovered 1846 by Galle after predictions by Urban Leverrier) Pluto has been photographed in pre-discovery: by Nicolson at Mt. Wilson Observatory in 1919 (see IAU Circular 288 ), by E.E. Barnard in January, 1921, by Ross at Williams Bay in January, 1927, and by Delporte at Uccle in January, 1927 (see MNRAS Vol. 90, p. 768

Extractions: John Flamsteed became the first Astronomer Royal on the founding of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675. Coincidentally, like Johannes Hevelius he was the son of a prosperous brewer. As his career progressed, he increasingly identified himself with Tycho Brahe, whom he called 'the noble Tycho' or 'the noble Dane'. Like his mentor, Flamsteed was devoted to astronomical measurement, was responsible for equipping and developing an observatory, received patronage from the king while also meeting many of his own costs, and was, he believed, beset by enemies and detractors. Officially called 'Astronomical Observator', Flamsteed preferred to style himself 'Mathematicus Regius' - Tycho had been 'Imperial Mathematician' in Prague. The engravings of the Royal Observatory and its instruments, commissioned by Flamsteed's patron Jonas Moore from Francis Place, were probably part of a scheme to publish an account of the observatory after the manner of Tycho's Mechanica As the first incumbent, Flamsteed had to fashion the image of the occupant of the Royal Observatory and Tycho, 'the greatest prince among astronomers', was a valuable resource. In seeking to assert an independent authority over his observations, Flamsteed could deploy the association between astronomy and nobility represented by Tycho. In an age more attracted to the construction of theories in astronomy, of which Newton's Principia was the outstanding example, Flamsteed attributed a higher morality to laying down a secure store of measurements than to following the uncertain and transient goal of theory. It was a judgement he believed he shared with his noble predecessor.
