    Extractions: Microgravity Research Program Forman Williams might not have become a combustion researcher if the organic chemistry course he took during his freshman year in college had been a little easier for him. Of course, the field he eventually chose wouldn't seem like child's play to most. In the early 1950s, Williams attended Princeton University where, instead of chemical engineering, he studied aeronautical engineering and minored in physics. A graduate course in combustion that Williams took while an undergraduate seems to have set the direction for his life. When Professor Martin Summerfield wrote down the differential equations for reacting flows, Williams took note. "I really liked those," he admits. "They were complicated enough to keep me busy for the rest of my life." Combustion Theory, to Von Karman in honor of the engineer's influence on the field. Eventually, the space shuttle offered the opportunity to conduct long-duration microgravity experiments on burning droplets. Williams' Fiber-Supported Droplet Combustion experiment flew on the second United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML–2) mission in October 1995, and his Droplet Combustion Experiment flew on the first Microgravity Science Laboratory (MSL–1) mission in April 1997 and its reflight in July 1997. In microgravity, Williams' research has revealed phenomena never before seen, such as a flame that continued to burn after the disappearance of all the liquid fuel. Developing theories and equations that adequately account for such events should keep Williams and his Princeton University colleague, Fred Dryer, busy for many years to come. This is just fine with Williams, who enthusiastically adds, "I like research. I would like to do it forever!"

    Extractions: These MISR nadir-camera images from April 23, 2000 (Terra orbit 1855) and May 9, 2000 (Terra orbit 2088) show cloud swirls, like delicate lace, forming patterns known as von Karman vortex streets. The turbulent atmospheric eddies form in the wake of an obstacle, in this instance the 1050-meter-high summit on the island of Socorro, Mexico. The surrounding clouds make the vortex patterns visible. To the northeast, much subtler disturbances are associated with the tiny Isla San Benedicto. Both islands are part of a group known as the Revillagigedo Archipelago, and are located about 400 kilometers equatorward of the southern tip of Baja California. Each of these images is approximately 180 kilometers wide and 350 kilometers long.     Extractions: Drag at supersonic speeds include the drag components at subsonic flow conditions (skin friction drag and induced drag) and a wave drag , characteristic of supersonic flows only. This drag component is in fact due to the energy radiated by the aerodynamic system through the shock waves. The wave drag is on turns divided in (wave) drag due to volume and (wave) drag due to lift. It can be proved that the wave drag is proportional to the volume and inversely proportional to the fourth power of the body length. The Sears-Haack body is a slender body of revolution pointed at both ends, that corresponds to the minimum wave drag (for given volume and length) of a linear distribution of sources at supersonic speeds.     Extractions: COLLEGE STATION Junkins presented the von Karman Lecture entitled "Adventures on the Interface of Dynamics and Control" at the AIAA Aerospace Sciences meeting in Reno, Nev., Jan. 6-9. He will represent AIAA on a lecture tour during 1997, repeating the presentation at a dozen locations around the world. The annual award is named in honor of pioneering California Institute of Technology Professor Theodore von Karman. His many accomplishments included, in the 1940s, leading the national panel that created the United States Air Force as a separate armed service and set the direction toward the jet age. Junkins was selected to receive this year's von Karman Lectureship based on his accomplishments in aerospace engineering, teaching and research over the past three decades. During the late 1960s at McDonnell Douglas, he developed pioneering guidance and control methods for the Delta rocket. In the 1970s, he developed a method for spacecraft navigation using computer-automated on-board star pattern recognition. In 1980, he developed a method for using the earth's magnetic field to change the pointing direction of a spinning satellite in minimum time. During recent years Junkins has developed control methods for maneuvering large flexible spacecraft and has invented patented laser sensing technology for applications in machine vision and multimedia. His ideas have been implemented successfully in many space missions. Widely recognized for his scholarship, he has authored over 330 publications, including three books.

    Extractions: Ingegneria Civile Il crollo del ponte sospeso Tacoma Narrows nel 1940 La mattina del 7 novembre 1940 il Tacoma Narrows Bridge crollo' "abbattuto" dal vento sostenuto che soffiava attraverso Puget Sound ad una cinquantina di chilometri a sud di Seattle negli Stati Uniti. Era aperto da soli quattro mesi, il disastro fu documentato da fotografie e video di grande impatto drammatico riprese da Burt Farquharson un docente di ingegneria civile che studiava i movimenti del ponte. All'inaugurazione il ponte ondulava gia' tanto ma senza conseguenze fatali si riteneva che gli amanti del brivido lo cercassero per provare l'esperienza di una attraversata da ottovolante! Altri deviavano di diversi chilometri dal percorso prestabilito per evitare il "galloping gertie" ovvero il "dinosauro a galoppo". Le cause del crollo Theodore Von Karman ovvero mediante il distacco dei vortici detti appunto di Von Karman "vortex shedding", fenomenologie note nell'ingegneria aerospaziale e aeronautica. I fenomeni aerodinamici e aeroelastici Prima di illustrare il fenomeno del flutter e' necessario distinguere i fenomeni di interazione vento/struttura in fenomeni aerodinamici e fenomeni aeroelastici con riferimento alle proprieta' delle forze che risultano agire sulla struttura investita dal vento. Nei fenomeni aerodinamici la risposta della struttura (moto della struttura) pur avendo un ruolo non trascurabile nelle equazioni del moto non altera sostanzialmente la corrente sollecitante (flusso dell'aria) al contrario dei fenomeni aeroelastici in cui il flusso dell'aria risulta completamente modificato dal moto della struttura. Corrispondentemente si parla di oscillazioni "forzate" come risposta alle forze aerodinamiche e di oscillazioni "autoeccitate" in presenza di fenomeni aeroelastici.
