good stuff from the early archives of marvel's golden age
This is an awesome book whether you're a Cap fan or not.Good stories and some of the best art to grace the pages of Marvel comics..Nuff said

Cap gets mature
The stories in this Essential Volume has more depth, the late 60s and early 70s society is reflected in the plots and the characters are less naive. Maybe the art is not iconic like the Kirby and Steranko stuff, but I think Gene Colan is the best artist for Captain America. In this Essential we have the art of John Romita Sr. and Sal Buscema too, so maybe this volume is one must have for the Cap lovers.

A very big Essential Book With Good and Interesting Stories. Not to mention its always interesting to see Captain America struggle with being relevant.

Cap & the Falcon - Together!
This is another very good go-around with America's star-spangled hero.Cap goes through a lot of personal turmoil in this collection, including his relationship with Sharon Carter and how he is viewed by the American public.The Red Skull shows up a few times as well as Hydra, the Cap & Bucky from the 50s, and assorted other villains.This is also the official beginning of the Cap/Falcon team.The Gene Colan artwork is superb at the beginning, followed by the incomparable John Romita, and the stylistic Sal Buscema.

Cap gets relevant
Hearken back three-and-a-half decades to the early 1970s.The 1960s may have been over, but they were still felt.Vietnam, the civil rights movement and the counterculture were all still fresh, and a man like Captain America - a walking version of the flag - seemed not only irrelevant but somehow ridiculous.In the Essential Captain America Volume 3, Cap realizes this and tries to remake himself.

It starts right off the bat, as Cap is forced to prove his loyalty to SHIELD; he does so, but feels betrayed in the process, leading him to take a leave and hit the road to find himself.Even then, he gets in tangles, particularly with the Red Skull.(The Skull is also a man of the wrong era, but unlike Cap, who tries to adapt to the new world, the Skull tries to remake the world to fit his own design.)Cap eventually comes home and teams up with the Falcon, who will soon share cover billing with the Star-Spangled Avenger (but make no mistake, this is still Cap's book).

The Falcon, one of the earlier black superheroes in the Marvel Universe, seems to be partnered with Cap to give the latter some street credibility.The Falcon is more interested in crime in his own neighborhood than in super villains, which creates a constant conflict between the two.As the Falcon fights for race equality, Cap's girlfriend, SHIELD agent Sharon Carter fights for equality of the sexes.

While this is all entertaining, this is also a period in Captain America's run that has a bad reputation.While it is awkward trying to watch a square guy trying to be hip, this is still a decent series of issues.Even if this is not Captain America at its best, it's still a lot of fun. ... The Flower class corvette was one of the most famous and numerous of all escort vessels, and the corvette Agassiz is the most representative of the Canadian Flowers, which were thrown into the thick of the bitter Atlantic convoy battles of 1941–2. Derived from a whalecatcher hull design, and intended as a cheap coastal escort that could be built by non-specialist yards, the Flowers were the only class available in large numbers when the submarine war flared up in earnest in 1941. As a result they were used on rigorous ocean convoy duties for which they were barely adequate, and their crews suffered greatly in one of the harshest arenas of the second world war. Hunting the steel whale
The Flower Class Corvette was a lengendary ship design that typified the war against Hitler's U-Boat.They were pressed into service, based on a whale catcher design, because the ships could be efficiently built in large numbers by yards accustomed to launching similar ships for commercial use.These small anti-submarine vessels held the line until faster, more capable convoy escorts like the River Class Frigates came on line.Any fan of author Nicholas Monserrat knows all about what Corvette duty was like, and if you buy a copy of AOTS "The Flower Class Corvette Agassiz," also consider buying Monserrat's novel, "The Cruel Sea."

In this Anatomy of the Ship volume, the plans and photos are top notch, among the best presented in the series. Everything is there for the reader to get a clear idea of how these important ships were built.The precise plans show virtually every nut, bolt and weld seam.You could easily build a nice scale model of a typical early war, short forecastle corvette from this book alone.

I have original Royal Canadian Navy plans for the early corvettes and the drawings in this book are right-on, agreeing with the official blueprints in all respects.But the plans in this book go far beyond what's available in official archives.Measurements were taken from actual surviving corvettes preserved as museum ships or still serving at the time of publication in foreign navies.Surviving plans and photos are translated into fine scale renderings, impressive in their detail, giving the ship modeler for the first time drawings that rival those that have, up till now, been only available to aircraft and model railroad buffs.

If you have a hankering to build a detailed replica of a small convoy escort that beat the odds in a big war, definitely get this book.I very highly recommend it.

The Flower Class Corvett Aggasiz
Aggassiz pronounced Aga-see. This book is a must for anyone interested in or making a model of a Flower Class Corvette. It has brief history of it's typemany interesting photogrphs, a mass of3-view and isometric drawings covering almost all you would need and want to know about about this type of Warshipship

One Of My Favorite "Anatomies"
The "Anatomy of the Ship" series has always been somewhat hit-and-miss in regards to overall quality, but this is one of my favorite books in the series. For the amateur naval architects out there, "Agassiz" contains a full set of framing and shell plating plans, superbly detailed diagrams of the main machinery (down to the drag links and stop valves), and 28 1:96 scale transverse sections of the hull. For modelers, there are six pages of plans depicting the hull lines, close-up views of spars and rigging, and multiple views of 38 types of fittings, everything from bucket racks, railing stanchions, and the anchor windlass. For the general naval enthusiast, this book contains profile views and deck plans of the modified Flower and Castle-class corvettes, along with detailed diagrams of the ship's weapons and minesweeping gear, including cross-sections of different types of ammunition and anti-submarine weapons.

For anyone modeling the Flower-class, or is interested in the "ins and outs" of the type, this book will prove invaluable. McKay's draftsmanship is superb, depicting every frame, beam, and girder in the little ships. "Agassiz" strikes a perfect balance between external details and internal arrangements, and the level of detail is often unbelievable. Up there with John Roberts' books on the Dreadnought and Hood.

I don't know anything about ships. I bought it as a gift for someone who is interested in WWII planes and ships. This book gives a history of the ship in the first half of the book, and the 2nd half of the book is all detailed ship drawings of probably every single part that is used to build the ship. It looks pretty thorough and informative if you are into this hobby.

Agassiz(Anatomy of the Ship)
This work is as complete a technical work on the Flower Class corvette as one is likely to find.

In keeping with this series of books it provides the reader with a technical description, photographs and scale line drawings on every conceivable aspect of this class.This work also provides a valuable look at the developments of this class of warship including refits, Modified Flowers and the Castle Class Frigate giving the reader a very complete history of development of a type of warship that has been overshadowed in most historical works by other vessels.

Wonderful historic account !
I recall the wreck of the "Herzogin Cecilie" when I was a boy of seven years age. One of the first newspaper stories I can remember clearly. This book of 224 pages, is extremely well written, illustrated, indexed and contains seven great appendixes including Principal Sources Used, and a Table of Freights earned while the vessel was registered under the flag of Finland.
This is a book that should be on the book shelves of those who are interested in the last days of sail, and the Life and Times of a Four-Masted Barque. ... Read more

thrilling
At one time I had every issue of this comic but I had to sell them in tough economic times. It was good to see that the spiderman team-ups of yesteryear still give me the same thrill today.

More truly great older stories
This was the golden years for Marvel Team-Up. John Byrne inked a number of issues, and his list of guest stars was unique rather than prancing the same characters through time and again. Minor characters like Woodgod, Captain Britain, Havok, Tigra, Ms. Marvel, Iron Fist, Daughters of the Dragon, and Power Man went alongside Marvel's heavy hitters like Hulk, Iron Man, the Human Torch, Yellowjacket, and Captain America. Fighting alongside them in every issue was Spider-Man, and this was when Spidey was fun.

Most of the stories here are self-contained, with a few going over the course of two issues. All of the stories look great and even though they're in black and white you'll still love reading them. It was shortly after the last issue of this collection (issue 75) that MTU started going downhill both in artwork and story, but every issue here was good. They skipped issue74, which had Spidey teaming up with the 70's cast of Saturday Night Live. I guess there were licensing problems they didn't want to work around. It would have been nice to see Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi again, but I'd rather they skip the issue than fail to print the volume.

Another great "Essential" volume and a nice trip down memory lane for 70's comic fans. Highly recommended.

The reason the Marvel Essentials were created
The Marvel Essentials were created for several different reasons. One of them was a obvious attempt to get new readers to read comics from the beginning. The second reason why the Marvel Essentials were created was to get cheap issues of old comics that collectors sell for fortunes and get them in a decent price range of roughly $10 (although the prices that have stared to climb, with Marvel Essentials being charged at $12 or $13 which I personally think makes them overpriced)

Marvel Team-Up is a decent book but its nothing to write home about. The stories are the same basic stories that you've read in the first and second volumes (Unlike Marvel Two In One which actually started to become more relevant to the Marvel Universe) and the art's pretty good too. I don't hate Marvel Team-Up but its a book that you would want to get cheaper ... Read more

Four of the five senses (hence the sensual) are related to basic quadratic equations
This book, a compilation of the lectures Conway presented at the Joint Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of America in 1991, is a bit overstated in the title. In particular, the inclusion of the word "sensual." While some mathematicians no doubt get a significant buzz over the quadratic form, (polynomials in several variables where every term has degree two), I doubt if it reaches the point of sexual stimulation. In the first lecture he considers only equations of the form a*x^2 + b*x*y + c*y^2, where a, b and c are integers. While at first glance this may appear to be a severe restriction, that is not the case. For example, by rewriting the quadratic into the matrix form,

it is possible to work with matrices, determinants, bases, superbases, equivalence of forms, primitive vectors, and norms of the vectors. Tree diagrams are used to represent the bases of the forms, this leads to a large number of successive descriptive operations. By the time you reach the end of the book, Conway has gone through several of the human senses, considering the following questions.

*) Can you see the values of 3x^2 + 6xy - 5y^2?
*) Can you hear the shape of a lattice?
*) ... and can you feel its form?

The title of the fourth lecture is "The Primary Fragrances" so he "covers" four of the five senses.
I found the difficulty to be rather high, there were many times when I had to slow way down and process the material in small chunks. One of the primary reasons for this is that Conway introduces a lot of notations and terminology and it was not always immediately clear to me what he meant. However, I did manage to understand nearly all of it, which made reading it very worthwhile. Once I finished, I found myself surprised that such a "simple" equation led me down so many different mathematical paths.

If it's written by John Horton Conway, buy it.
The book doesn't need a review. It's written by John Horton Conway. Enough said. But if you insist on a review, the book (actually a series of three lectures)is a radical new "look" at quadratic forms through visual topographs. The lectures progress with even more ways of sensing quadratic forms (eg "hearing the shape of a drum"), and that's where the title comes from. "The Sensual Form" -- get it?It will change the way you look at QFs.If you need more information on Conway, he's the inventor of the mathematical game "life" and the author of the sublimest, rockingest math books on the planet, dude: Winning Ways, Numbers and Games, etc. He's one of the rarest of birds -- a contributor to the highest echelons of mathematical knowledge who's also great at putting it into readable, learnable text. ... One of the Mathematics master works of the 20th century
I have this checked out of the county library, but two weeks or two years,
I would still have trouble reading it all.
Dr. John Conway is one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century and Dr. Sloane isn't very far behind that. With their friend John Leech,
they have published this landmark in the history of group theory that seems destined to be beside Coexter's work as the most influential work on
on the theory of higher Euclidean and hyperbolic n dimensional groups.
That these groups have been related to the practical area of error free coding in information theory has made this knowledge both interesting and useful as well. With some awe I realize how much thought and work
went into writing this book.
I you were Dr. Sloane or Dr. Conway, you would have to ask yourselves, how can you ever top this?
This book is not "easy" reading, it hasn't been dumbed down
and the results are real enough for anybody.

The book on lattice
This book is devoted to the subject of lattice packings. It is an outstanding book with all pages interesting. It acts as a reference on the subjects of lattices. What you will find:
--Sphere packings, ie the problem of packing spheres in order to maximize density.
--The problem of Kissin numbers: maximize the number of adjacent sphere to a given sphere in a lattice
--Code, design, and Groups
--Error correcting codes
--Leech lattice
--Integral quadratic forms
--Voronoi cell
--many, many other subjects
What you WON'T find in this book:
--The study of Delaunay cells (or holes, L-polytopes) is quite limited
--The study of continuous families of lattice is not done, you won't find the Voronoi memoires here
--There is just one page on computational aspects of lattice
