Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Nicolaus Copernicus (German: ; in his youth, Niclas Koppernigk; Polish: ; Italian: ; 19 February 1473 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance astronomer and the first to formulate a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology, which displaced the Earth from the center of the universe. Copernicus' epochal book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), published just before his death in 1543, is often regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy and the defining epiphany that began the scientific revolution. His heliocentric model, with the Sun at the center of the universe, demonstrated that the observed motions of celestial objects can be explained without putting Earth at rest in the center of the universe. His work stimulated further scientific investigations, becoming a landmark in the history of science that is often referred to as the Copernican Revolution. Among the great polymaths of the Renaissance, Copernicus was a mathematician, astronomer, physician, quadrilingual polyglot, classical scholar, translator, artist, Catholic cleric, jurist, governor, military leader, diplomat and economist. Among his many responsibilities, astronomy figured as little more than an avocation yet it was in that field that he made his mark upon the world. Birthplace on St. Anne's (now Copernicus) Street, ToruNicolaus Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473 in the city of Toru (Thorn) in Royal Prussia, part of the Kingdom of Poland. His father was a merchant from Kraków and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy Toru merchant. Nicolaus was the youngest of four children. His brother Andreas (Andrew) became an Augustinian canon at Frombork (Frauenburg). His...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=323592 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in the home town of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (14731543) was erected in 1853 by a "monument committee" of the city's residents. King Frederick the Great of Prussia (17121786) intended to erect a monument at Copernicus' grave in Frauenburg (Frombork), but the grave could not be located. Astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (14731543) lived in Thorn (Toru), then in the Kingdom of Poland, for many years. In the late 18th century, Poland was partitioned and the city of Thorn passed to Prussia. From 1807 to 1813, the city was part of the Duchy of Warsaw, governed by Frederick Augustus I of Saxony. A monument to Copernicus was then planned by the Polish scientist and philosopher Stanisaw Staszic, after he had heard that Napoleon had expressed surprise during a visit to Thorn in 1807 that there was no monument there to Copernicus. Polish Roman Catholic clergy likewise supported the erection of a monument. In 1809 Napoleon commissioned Bertel Thorvaldsen and on Staszic's initiative, a cornerstone was laid for a monument. However, at the time, Prussian authorities, who were still nominally in charge of the city, would not approve the full construction of the monument. The fall of Napoleon ended the existence of the ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24829642 ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just go straight to Wikipedia and bypass the overpriced middleman
Save the outrageous $155 you'd spend here and just read its content directly on Wikipedia, which is where it was lifted. There's no actual editing here, despite the listing of three editors, since the artifacts of the cut-and-paste from the Wikipedia web pages (like link symbols) are still there. There are many good books out there about astronomy and planetary science: this ain't one of them.

However, if you insist on having something printed from Wikipedia, they have a "Create a book" feature, which allows to create your OWN (free) print-ready books in PDF form -- where you know EXACTLY what you're getting, since you're the one compiling its content. Include Pluto as a planet, if you like, since you can arrange the chapters and such any way you like. Look for the "Create a book" link on the left-hand side of each page on Wikipedia.

If you insist on having something professionally printed and bound from Wikipedia -- actually, it might make a convenient format for a school library or homeschooling class -- that same collection of articles you compiled above can be converted into a physical book by a service called Pedia Press -- and it'll only run you about eight-to-twenty bucks plus shipping, depending on how many pages you want. I'd give direct links to Wikipedia, but the Amazon review system chokes on links, no matter how relevant or useful. Use a search engine, or look for "Help:Books" at Wikipedia. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The celestial spheres, or celestial orbs, were the fundamental entities of the cosmological models developed by Plato, Eudoxus, Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus and others. In these celestial models the stars and planets are carried around by being embedded in rotating spheres made of an aetherial transparent fifth element (quintessence), like jewels set in orbs. In Ptolemy's geocentric model adopted in the middle ages, the planetary spheres (i.e. those that contained planets) were arranged outwards from the spherical, stationary Earth at the centre of the universe in this order: the spheres of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The planetary spheres were followed by the stellar sphere containing the fixed stars; other scholars added a ninth sphere to account for the precession of the equinoxes, a tenth to account for the supposed trepidation of the equinoxes, and even an eleventh to account for the changing obliquity of the ecliptic. In antiquity the order of the lower planets was not universally agreed. Plato and his followers ordered them Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, and then followed the standard model for the upper spheres. ... Excerpt: Zbigniew Herbert ( listen) (29 October 1924 in Lwów 28 July 1998 in Warsaw) was an influential Polish poet, essayist, drama writer, author of plays, and moralist. A member of the Polish resistance movement Home Army (AK) during World War II, he is one of the best known and the most translated post-war Polish writers. He was first published in 1950; his writing debut was a volume of verse String of light and it was published in 1956. One of Herberts most valuable works is a cycle of writings about Pan Cogito (Mr. Cogito), a character that is very modern but still sticks to the European cultural tradition. He was a distant relative of the 17th century poet George Herbert. Herbert was a bachelor of the Order of the White Eagle and was educated as an economist and lawyer. In the 1980s Herbert was the main poet of the Polish opposition. Starting in 1986, he lived in Paris, where he cooperated with the journal Zeszyty Literackie. He came back to Poland in 1992. On 1 July 2007 the Polish Government decided that 2008 would be the Year of Zbigniew Herbert. Herbert's familyThe Herberts probably had some English roots and they came to Galicia from Vienna. The poets father, Bolesaw (half-blooded Armenian), was a soldier in the Polish Legions during World War I and a defender of Lwów; he was a lawyer and worked as a bank manager. Herberts grandfather was an English language teacher. Zbigniews mother, Maria, came from the Kaniaków family. Before the war Zbigniew Herbert attended the Pastwowe VIII Gimnazjum i Liceum im. Króla Kazimierza Wielkiego we Lwowie (during the Soviet occupation the name was changed to High School nr 14). After the German and Soviet invasion and subsequent occupation of Lwów, he continued his studies at the secret meetings organized... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1195679 ... Read more

Elisabeth Koopmann (or Kaufmann , German : " merchant " ) was, like Hevelius and his first wife, a member of a rich merchant family in the Hanseatic League city of Danzig (Gdansk). The marriage of the sixteen year old to Hevelius in 1663 allowed her also to pursue her own interest in astronomy by helping him manage his observatory. They had a son, who died soon, and three daughters who survived . Following his death in 1687, she completed and published Prodromus astronomiae (1690), their jointly compiled catalogue of 1,564 stars and their positions. She is considered one of the first female astronomers, and called "the mother of moon charts". Her life was recently novelized as The Star Huntress (2006). The minor planet 12625 Koopman is named in her honour, as is the crater Corpman on Venus.
