A good start for any child or teenager interested in electronics
MICHAEL FARADAY by Martin Gutnik is a 108 page book on the life, times, and inventions, of Michael Faraday.The book contains a dozen detailed pen and ink drawings of buildings and of various people.In addition, the book provides schematic diagrams of various devices, that is, an electric circuit that provokes a compass needle to jump (page 47), the first electric motor, which involved a pool of mercury (page 50), a circuit that causes induction (page 73), and a generator (page 76).These schematic diagrams, in my opinion, constitute the heart of the book, as they best represent the inventions/discoveries of Michael Faraday.

The book does a good job at disclosing the early life of Mr. Faraday, such as his 7-year apprenticeship to a bookbinder.The book does an excellent job at revealing the concept of career decisions.For example, we learn that Mr. Faraday, at one point, was wondering if he should become a bookbinder or a scientist, and we learn that his first supervisor (Mr. Riebau) encouraged Mr. Faraday to decide on his own.In contrast, Mr. Faraday's second employer (Mr. De la Roche) was a harsh bully (reading in between the lines of this book).The book is careful to explain that the importance of Hans Oerstad's discovery that electric currents can produce a magnetic field, and that this discovery was vital to subsequent discoveries by Michael Faraday and others.The book also devotes a few pages to Mr. Faraday's courtship and relationship with Sarah Barnard.

CRITIQUE.A child reading this book on her own is not likely to understand how and when an electric current is able to generate a magnetic field.A child reading this book is not likely to understand what is, "induction."The text that describes the first electric motor refers to a magnet, but the picture showing this electric motor (page 50) has several words (pivot, wire, iron bar, mercury, battery) but the word "magnet" appears in the text but does not appear in the drawing.Hence, this particular description is incomplete and will be confusing to most readers.In this reviewer's opinion, each of the diagrams should have been expanded to a set of four or five related diagrams, with lines showing the location and development over time of the magnetic field, or step-by-step pictures showing the movement of the electric current.Thus, the book is best read to a child by an adult or older teenager having a background in elementary electronics, where the adult or older teenager can fill in the blanks by making more illustrations with a pencil, to supplement the perfunctory illustrations provided by this book.

Even adult-oriented biographies on Michael Faraday, such as MICHAEL FARADAY by L.P. Williams, and THE ELECTRIC LIFE OF MICHAEL FARADAY by Alan Hirshfeld, are painfully inadequate in their explanations of simple electric devices made by Michael Faraday and his peers.It does not have to be this way.I eagerly await an elementary book for children on Michael Faraday that explains, in a step-by-step manner, the workings of the first electric generator, the workings of the first electric motor, and the concept of induction.

There does exist one excellent, elementary book that details concepts behind generators, motors, and induction.This is BASIC ELECTRICITY by Van Valkenburgh, Nooger, and Neville, and published by Prompt Publications.But this book is marketed as a trade book in beginning electronics--it is not marketed as a book for children. ... Who is the author?
I am mystified about the author. The book says it was written in 1882/3. Michael Faraday, the great scientist died in about 1867. This book slyly refers to the author's work in chemistry & philosophy. Is it the same man? The title does not mention a scientific refutation of Jesus Christ, but it does a good job subjectively.

Jesus Christ: A Fiction Founded Upon the Life of Apollonius
When you read the book, you don't know if it was written by Faraday the scientist or someone else with the same name. Any way, the book is not what you will expect from the title, a scientific analysis about Christianism, but a collection of comments of "spirits" obtained by mean of a medium in some spiritism sessions.
