The first part of the book is an overview of projective geometry. The second part contains Klein's remarkable work on embedding both Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry into the framework of projective geometry. The most significant consequence of this was the equivalence of the consistency of Euclidean geometry with the consistency of non-Euclidean (Lobachevskian) geometry in the plane. Beautiful introduction to the projective view of non-euclidean geometry
Chapter 1 in an excellent introduction to analytic projective geometry. Chapter 2 presents the projective geometry and classification of second degree curves and surfaces. Chapter 3 studies the subgroup of projective transformations that maps a given second degree curve or surface onto itself. Chapter 4 carries over the concepts of distance and angle from euclidean geometry to projective geometry. Chapter 5 shows that all this can in fact be built up independently of euclidean geometry. Chapter 6 introduces the non-euclidean geometries by (in the plane case) defining a metric on the projective plane relative to a second degree curve: the distance between two points in defined as a multiple of the logarithm of the cross-ratio of the two points with the two collinear points on the conic. Different conics (chapter 2) give different geometries, each of which we know is consistent without appeal to Euclidean geometry (chapter 5), and whose isometries are given by chapter 3. A real conic gives hyperbolic geometry (the projective disc model in particular), an imaginary conic gives elliptic geometry, and Euclidean geometry is given by the parabolic limit case of a degenerate conic consisting of two imaginary points. Chapter 7 discusses the differences between the different geometries, including a discussion of which may be the true geometry of space. Chapter 8 develops some basic theorems in the non-euclidean geometries. Chapter 9 discusses the possible topological structures of the different geometries. Chapter 10 gives an excellent survey of the history of non-euclidean geometry.
