Thoreau's natural history journal entries
Walter Harding, one of the founders and the longtime secretary of the Thoreau Society, pored over Henry's journal and picked out the most vivid natural history descriptions for this book.Harding begins with a good, succinct biographical introduction to Thoreau.That's followed by journal entries from 1837 to 1861, which cover a variety of natural observations:red squirrels chattering; the discovery of a mud-turtle's eggs; an errant bee flying into the kitchen and landing on molasses.We listen to what Henry saw back then, and realize that if we so desired, we could probably see similar natural phenomena if we'd just get out of the house and start looking around for ourselves.Most of these pieces appear only in the journal and not in any formal essays, so this book fills a niche for those looking for such excerpts.A nice addition to the Thoreauvian bookshelf, if you can find a used copy at a reasonable price. ...
