4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent rescource for historical research on sheriffs
Since the book dates back to the 1800's when first published, its historical value is prominent. It bridges the English sheriffs' roles and early American sheriffs' duties.

It is a little tough reading, since itseems to be written in some version of "old-english"; it is notlike reading a foreign language by any means, but those who have alaw-enforcement or legal background will have an easier time decipheringsome terms (for example, "gaol" is used in the book, andcorresponds to how we would currently spell the term:"jail").

A good resource for lawyers researching employment lawissues relating to "at-will" employment of deputies--still aliveand well in many parts of the country (especially the west)--civil servicelaws notwithstanding.

The book loses the 5th star-rating because of itsreadability difficulty; on the other hand, that is what makes it a greathistorical research document. ... Read more

Accordingly, it was determined to invite the teachers and friends of Sunday schools to a public breakfast, on the morning of Wednesday, May 13th, at the New London Tavern, Cheapside. Breakfast was provided, at seven o'clock, for two hundred; and the meeting excited great interest. Mr. Marriott, the treasurer, presided; and after the Rev. Richard Watson had implored the Divine blessing, a report of the proceedings of the Union, from its formation, was read. From that report it appeared that the following had been its only publications: -- A Plan for the Establishment and Regulation of Sunday Schools; of which one edition had been printed. An Introduction to Reading, part the first; of which 150,000 copies had been printed. The same, in a series of Lessons for Collective Teaching. An Introduction to Reading, part the second; of which 85,000 copies had been printed.A Catechism in verse, entitled, Milk for Babes ; of which 38,000 had been printed.A Select List of Scriptures, designed as a Guide to Teachers for a Course of Reading in Sunday Schools. The first resolution submitted to the meeting was moved by Mr. T. H. Home, author of the Introduction to the Critical Study of the Scriptures, now the rector of St. Edmund the King, and prebendary of St. Paul's; and seconded by the Rev. Legh Richmond, the author of the Dairyman's Daughter. There were some senti... ... Read more

Hank LOVES baseball. L-O-V-E-S it! Unfortunately, though, he's not very good at the game. So everyone is surprised--including Hank himself--when Hank throws a zinger pitch at a practice for P.S. 87's annual School Olympiad baseball game. Hank knows how he pitched the "Zippity Zinger"--it must have happened because he accidentally wore his sister Emily's lucky monkey socks! Because of that stellar pitch, Hank has been chosen to pitch for P.S. 87 for the Big Game. The pressure is on--Hank's got to wear those socks again, or risk blowing the biggest ball game of his life. The only problem is, Emily wants to wear the lucky monkey socks herself since she's competing in the Brain Buster for the Olympiad. Will Hank be able to pull off another Zippity Zinger--or will he strike out? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars more in a good kid series
my 11 yr old 5th gr daughter is a devoted Hank Zipzer fan; these are quick easy reads for her, but very enjoyable; I even like when she reads out loud to me; they help her better understand her Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) & learning disabilities (LD) in a fun way; Henry Winkler turned his negative childhood experiences into a positive thing for his children & ours

5-0 out of 5 stars Knocked it out of the park
What does any child fear? Looking like a fool in public. Hank loves baseball but he doesn't think he can play very well, and even with his grandfather wanting to spend time helping him hone his skills he doesn't want to try out for the school Olympiad. PS87 is having their annual Olympiad and the students are divided into two teams - team Yellow and team Blue. There are three events - Brain Buster Trivia, Softball and Triple C, Clean and Clutter Free. Hank had signed up for the 3C but while practicing with his Grandpa starts throwing wicked pitches. Unfortunately he thinks it is because of his sister's red socks with pink monkeys. He believes they are lucky socks.

Soon however, his sister is looking for them for her own part in the Olympiad. His sister Emily is a brain, and always knows way more on a topic than most people would care to know. Hank on the other hand, struggles in school because of his dyslexia and has a low self image because of his consistent struggles and failures. Once Emily is looking for the socks, he struggles with the idea of hiding them from her. He has already committed to pitching in the Olympiad but does the right thing and gives her back her lucky socks. Can he still pitch? Will his yellow team win? Read to find out. This is yet another good book in this great series.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't beat the Hank Zipzer series for young boys!
My 9 year old son loves the Hanks Zipzer series and with this one being centered around his favorite sport, baseball, it is definitely a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and my son wants to read more
My son enjoys the entire Hank Zipzer series. He struggles with learning disabilities as Hank does, and enjoys the creative ways that Hank tries to get around them.My son also admires Hank's sense of humor and his loyal friends, Frankie and Ashley. And who wouldn't want a grandpa like Papa Pete?

5-0 out of 5 stars First book my dyslexic 11-year old son has read by himself
My son and I have read the first 3 books in the Hank Zipzer series together. We enjoyed each one, especially the underlying theme of hope for children who learn differently. This fourth book, was the turning point where my son actually is reading the book alone. If I could contact Mr. Winkler I would like to thank him for being such a great role model for kids who are bright and creative but have difficulties in areas that the rest of us take for granted. The print is large and the vocabulary is not overwhelming yet the stories are fun and meaningful for the tween age group. We can't wait for the 5th book to come out in May 2004. ... A vicious tale of a warped, evil man who preys on hopeful, lonely women through the singles' ads.A naive socialite from Atlanta, middle-aged Marynell Barton has just moved to La Jolla and is as naive and gullible as they come; a fast-living centerfold neighbor convinces her to play the singles' ads and she gets up enough nerve to try it, and meets Henry Jarvis, a womanizing recluse, a bitter, dangerous psychopath, with his seething hatred for his ex-wife Phyllis just under the surface. At first, his seduction of Marynell is just what he wanted then it turns into more than he bargained for as Marynell becomes possessive and overbearing, cleaning his house, cooking his meals, taking over his life. She has never experienced sexual wantonness such as Henry subjects her to and she thinks she's in love with him because of the sex.Ultimately, he cracks and in a violent rage kills her in the bathtub and cuts up her body, putting the pieces in black plastic grbage bags. His great pride is his vegetable garden in his back yard and he buries Marynell's body parts under the broccoli in the middle of the night. He doesn't realilze the neighborhood busybody, Miss Mabel, is watching him through a hole in their shared fence. The race against time that ensues and the fateful series of coincidences that delay the police's discovery of the body and the clever murder of Miss Mabel, comprise the page-turner-novel about an ordinary-looking man who loved his garden who was actually the murdering neighbor-monster from hell. And he almost gets away with it.This is a sexually explicit adult novel.

Product Description
Inspired by the true life experiences of Henry Winkler, whose undiagnosed dyslexia made him a classic childhood underachiever, the Hank Zipzer series is about the high-spirited and funny adventures of a boy with learning differences.

It's science project time in Ms. Adolf's class. This is good news and bad news for Hank-he loves science, but he hates the report part. So Hank turns to TV to take his mind off things. But when the program directory scrolls by too quickly for Hank to know what's on, he decides to take apart the cable box to try to slow down the crawl. Great! Now Hank has found the perfect science project! But what he wasn't counting on was his sister's pet iguana laying eighteen eggs in the disassembled cable box. How is Hank going to get out of this one?

5-0 out of 5 stars HANK ROCKS!!!
The Hank Zipzer series of books are the greatest. Great job Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver ! They have such great (clean) humor and what memories it brings back from those awkward elementary school years. These books are geared not just for kids, but for adult enjoyment too. My son and I have read the first 4 and loved them all. They make for a nice book report for school too, each around 150 pages and they just whiz by. Another thing we like is that even from the first paragraph, it has your attention. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun
As the back of the book says: "Hank Zipzer: He's smart. He's creative. He's funny. His pencils are sharpened. His binders are bound. He wants to do well in school - he really does. He tries not to be lazy, like his parents claim he is. So why is he always getting into trouble?" Maybe just because he is Hank Zipzer. Hank is blessed with good friends, a good family, and even exceptional intelligence. The problem is he has learning disabilities, and even though he tries hard, things do not always go as he plans. With the big science fair coming up, who can imagine the problems Hank will run into.

Hank comes up with a fantastic idea for his science project. He plans on trying to make the TV Guide on cable easier for kids with learning disabilities to read. He plans to take apart the family cable box and experiment with it. But while he has the box apart his sisters Iguana lays eggs in it. Zipzer must rethink his plan and deal with a nesting Iguana under his bed. Oh what an adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great boy book.

This book talks about friends putting on a magic show for Hank's cousins.Frankie, one of Hank's friends, is the magician. He remembers that he wants to see a monster movie so Hank says he's going to record it.But he presses the wrong button. Frankie gets mad when they get home. Hank is so sorry he takes the cable box apart. They buy a new one the guy forthe cable company has a copy of the movie that Hank didn't record. Then Hank invites Frankie over to see the movie.I like this book because it has a good ending and it like he's talking to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Enchilada! They've done it again.
Yet another great addition to the Hank Zipzer series.Kids will love to see what happens to Hank, a 4th grade boy that has just won the chance to have the school's Japanese exchange student stay at his house. The book is hilarious, in true Hank style, from the iguana sticking to the kitchen floor with wallpaper paste to his teacher farting her way out of the room.At the same time, readers will be sympathetic for Hank when they see what he goes through as a dyslexic student. This book will keep students engaged, as well as show them a realistic story about a boy with a learning disability.I've read books in this series with my class before and this one (book 6) is just as wonderful as the others and will be added to my classroom library next year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Explosive fun
What kind of trouble can Hank Zipzer get into when his school is hosting a multi-cultural day? All kinds. In this segment of the adventures of Hank, his friends and family the Zipzers, are selected to host a visiting international student. Yoshi Morimoto and his Father are from PS87's sister school in Tokyo and are visiting schools in America. The visit coincides with PS87's multicultural day.

The problems begin when the gang, Hank, Frankie, Ashley and Yoshi try to make enchiladas and the task of reading the recipe falls on Hank. With his dyslexia he struggles with the fractions, and the enchiladas end up with a lot of zing. Once again Hank learns that telling the truth is the best way to go. A good story in a great series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent experience
This book was delivered in just the condition that had been advertised (in this case excellent condition) and the shipping was excellent.I would definitely use this seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not excellent
My 4th Grade son has read most of the Hank Zipzer series and found them to be "ok" -- funny and reasonably well written, but somehow not completely engaging for him.I found some of the writing to be a little formulaic.Still and all, I would recommend you give this series a try if you're looking for something new.My boy is a little finicky, and he liked these well enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Gem from Henry!
I am an elementary teacher who just wrapped up third grade.I read the Hank Zipzer series aloud to my class this year and they all agreed this was their favorite. At one point, we were laughing so loud that a colleage stuck her head in the classroom to make sure we were okay. All of these books kept the kids interested, made them laugh, and got many of them reading them independently after I had read it to them! One of our class catch phrases this year was, in the words of Frankie, "right, and my name is Bernice."Many of my students could relate to Hank's learning challenges and felt better knowing it was "okay" to struggle!Hats off to Henry Winkler and Hank!

For Hank, fourth grade does not start out on the right foot. First of all, he gets called to the principal's office on the very first day of school. Then the first assignment his teacher gives him is to write five paragraphs on "What You Did This Summer." Hank is terrified-writing one good sentence is hard for him, so how in the world is he going to write five whole paragraphs? Hank comes up with a plan: instead of writing what he did on vacation, he'll show what he did. But when Hank's "living essay" becomes a living disaster, he finds himself in detention. Strangely enough, however, detention ends up becoming a turning point in his life. ... Read more

Niagara Falls, Or Does It? #1 (Hank Zipzer)

My name is Jacob i read this book for my summer reading project.

This book is about a 4th grader named Hank Zipzer who has a learning disability.Hank needs to write a essay on what he did over the summer, but he can't think of anything to write about. So Hank decided to build Niagara Falls instead.

i liked this book because it's funny and people can get a good laugh out of it.
i would reccomend this book to anyone because it's a good book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Reluctant Readers!
This is a great book for reluctant readers(or any readers for that matter)! We introduced this book to our 5th grade struggling readers, and they loved it!We heard them laughing out loud as they read, and they needed no "encouragement" from us teachers to keep reading the book.Others students in the class noticed the popularity of the book and wanted to read the book, too. When students finished this book, they wanted to read the next books in the series.(It's a rare book indeed that entices struggling or reluctant readers to want to read more.)

The writing is clever and funny, and the vocabulary is accessible for 4th and 5th grade struggling readers. I think many of our students identified with Hank's struggles.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
There aren't many book series for boys that I can recommend without hesitating.Hank Zipzer is the exception -- These books give you truly funny and entertaining stories, lovable characters who learn and try, acceptable language, school challenges, and respectful kids.WOW.

No real illustrations within the book, but doodling on the chapter headings. My 8-year-old gives these a big thumbs-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
Thank you to the authors for this wonderful series of books. My 9 year old son has been a reluctant reader and now he is begging for these books as we finish them. We have gone from me reading them aloud to us reading separately and talking about the stories together! The characters are strong and diverse. The situations are funny and Hank's journey through being misunderstood evokes empathy in a young reader.I'm in love with this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 4th Graders Love It
Want to capture the interest of 8-10 years old ( perfect for 4th graders ) this is the magic book. It is one of a series but the one you should start with. When you have a class say can we read today - you know the book has done its job. I recommend this book to "kick start" a love a reading older chapter books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Whata Way to Go!
Loads of modes of transportation to get to the hospital! They did make it to the hospital. You need to read this book because the authors REALLY use their imaginations when it came to no room for them on the train and they had Cheerio to take with them, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful adventure with the Zipzer family.
You would think after 14 books I would be bored with a book about a young boy with dyslexia. Yet I am not; I actually anticipate the new books as they come out. I do not always read them in order but find that each stands well on its own. In the beginning of this tale, Hank is feeling the pinch of preparing to share a room with his new little brother who is on the way. The Zipzer parents decide to give Hank and his sister Emily a trip before the new sibling arrives. So Stanley takes the two skiing in Vermont. While on the slopes they get the call - Randi has gone into labour.

The trip to the hospital is no easy matter. A giant storm is blowing in.Yet how can you not have fun traveling with the Zipzers by car, in a boxcar with horses, in a van full of Chinese acrobats, dogsled and yes, as the title says, even by dump truck. This is one of the best of the books in the series, and bound to be great fun for children of all ages.

As an aside, I recently lent these books to a manager at work. He read the first one, and his daughter is now reading him the rest. They loved them. He described them as just enough humour to keep a child interested, without being over the top or inappropriate and also engaging enough for an adult. I could not agree more. These really are great books for the whole family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Zipzer evolution
very entertaining reading as always, however this book has a different feel than all of the previous zipzer titles in that it doesn't really focus on Hank's learning challenges...Hank gets confused sometimes, but he just mentions that he has trouble and doesn't explain that there is a reason why. In fact, this is the first book in the series that the term "learning challenge" is not mentioned at all. I feel that the author is trying to take the series more mainstream, which is fine, however for the kids with learning challenges out there who like to identify with Hank, like my 9 yr old son, this might not be so good. Winkle also did not repeat as many facts as he has done in every previous book, which was fine by me....good read, but would like to hear a little bit more about Hank in the future.... ... Excerpt: Henry Watson Fowler (10 March 1858 26 December 1933) was an English schoolmaster, lexicographer and commentator on the usage of the English language. He is notable for both A Dictionary of Modern English Usage and his work on the Concise Oxford Dictionary, and was described by The Times as "a lexicographical genius". After an Oxford education, Fowler was a schoolmaster until his middle age and then worked in London as a freelance writer and journalist, but was not very successful. In partnership with his brother Francis, and beginning in 1906, he began publishing seminal grammar, style and lexicography books. After his brother's death in 1918, he completed the works on which they had collaborated and edited additional works. Fowler was born on 10 March 1858 in Tonbridge, Kent. His parents, the Rev. Robert Fowler and his wife Caroline, née Watson, were originally from Devon. Robert Fowler was a Cambridge graduate, clergyman, and schoolmaster. At the time of Henry's birth he was teaching mathematics at Tonbridge School, but the family soon moved to nearby Tunbridge Wells. Henry was the eldest child of seven, and his father's early death in 1879 left...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=260948 ... Read more

Excerpt: Paul Franklin Watson (born December 2, 1950) is a controversial and outspoken Canadian animal rights and environmental activist, who founded and is president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a direct action group devoted to marine conservation. The Toronto native joined a Sierra Club protest against nuclear testing in 1969. He was an early, influential, and outspoken member of Greenpeace, crewed and skippered for it, and later was a board member. Watson argued for a strategy of direct action that conflicted with the Greenpeace interpretation of nonviolence, was ousted from the board in 1977, and subsequently left the organization. That same year, he formed Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The group is the subject of a reality show, Whale Wars. He also promotes veganism, reducing the human population by voluntarily having fewer children, and rejecting an anthropocentric worldview for a biocentric worldview. Paul Watson was born in Toronto to Anthony Joseph Watson and Annamarie Larsen, and grew up in St. Andrew...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=311003 ... Read more
