Helping Children Handle Disaster-Related Anxiety
Children sense the anxiety and tension in adults around them. And, like adults, children experience the same feelings of helplessness and lack of control that disaster-related stress can bring about. Unlike adults, however, children have little experience to help them place their current situation into perspective. Each child responds differently to disasters, depending on his or her understanding and maturity, but it’s easy to see how an event like this can create a great deal of anxiety in children of all ages because they will interpret the disaster as a personal danger to themselves and those they care about. Whatever the child’s age or relationship to the damage caused by disaster, it’s important that you be open about the consequences for your family, and that you encourage him or her to talk about it. Quick Tips for Parents
  • Children need comforting and frequent reassurance that they’re safe make sure they get it.
  • Be honest and open about the disaster.

What does test anxiety feel like?
  • Some students feel mainly physical distress symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, faintness, feeling too hot or too cold, etc.
  • Others express more emotion, wanting to cry or laugh too much, or feeling angry or helpless.
  • The major problem of test anxiety is usually its effect on thinking ability; it can cause you to blank out or have racing thoughts that are difficult to control.

  • Be well prepared for the test.
  • Include as much self-testing in your review as possible.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: get enough sleep, good nutrition, exercise, some personal "down" time, and a reasonable amount of social interaction.

Anxiety is a normal human feeling. We all experience it when faced with situations we find threatening or difficult. People often call this feeling stress but the word 'stress' can be used to mean two different things - on the one hand, the things that make us anxious and on the other, our reaction to them. This makes it a confusing word and so it will not be used in this leaflet. When our anxiety is a result of a continuing problem, such as money difficulties, we call it worry , if it is a sudden response to an immediate threat, like looking over a cliff or being confronted with an angry dog, we call it fear Normally, both fear and anxiety can he helpful, helping us to avoid dangerous situations, making us alert and giving us the motivation to deal with problems. However, if the feelings become too strong or go for too long, they can stop us from doing the things we want to and can make our lives miserable. A phobia is a fear of particular situations or things that are not dangerous and which most people do not find troublesome.
