http://www.aspergers.org/myths_about_aspergers_syndrome.htm
Myths About Aspergers Syndrome Aspergers Syndrome is “Mild Autism”….. There is nothing “mild” about autism. Aspergers is a neurobiological disorder which has a profound affect on basic life skills. Individuals with Aspergers struggle immensely to overcome their deficits. They must learn much of what others learn intuitively; what others learn without even trying. To the observer, Aspergers may *appear* milder than Classical Autism; however, for the individual living with the disorder, their struggles are not “mild”. Aspergers is caused by poor parenting…… Aspergers is not the result of the way one is brought up. Current research has determined that there is a genetic component. Parents of children with Aspergers often possess many Aspergerish traits. For example, a father may be perseverative and a mother display rigidity. The child diagnosed with Aspergers has the combination of traits from both parents that combine together to fit the Asperger diagnosis. Those with Aspergers Syndrome are uncaring and rude and unable to empathize with others…… Often, because of their inability to perceive other’s intentions and perspectives and their impaired capacity to read the unspoken gestures and nuances in everyday social communication, individuals with Aspergers do not respond or do not respond appropriately. This is not the result of not caring but rather the result of not responding to what they do not *see*. Communication is a two way street. We cannot expect someone to recognize, acknowledge and respond to that which they are unaware of.

Definition:
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a syndrome that usually is characterized by persistent, developmentally inappropriate attention span and impulse control.
Diagnosis: There is no single test for ADD. Diagnosis should be made through family, teacher, and health care professional interviews. A medical doctor should do a physical examination and possibly neurological testing. The child should also have a psychiatric evaluation and psychological testing with child rating scales. A team of professionals in education, medicine, and psychology should make the final diagnosis.
Causes: There is no known cause of ADD, however, studies do show differences between the brains of children with and without ADD. Researchers are investigating links to heredity, biology, birth complications, lead poisoning, and prenatal alcohol and drug exposure. Other conditions that can produce symptoms similar to ADD include mild seizures, emotional disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, chronic middle ear infections, unsafe living environments, learning disabilities, difficult classroom situations and anxiety.
Characteristics: A child who persistently displays in most settings a short attention span, forgetfulness, distractibility, reluctance to do tasks that require sustained mental effort, careless mistakes, item loss, failure to finish tasks or difficulty following instructions may have ADD.

Definition:
The name "Asperger" comes from Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician who first described the syndrome in 1944. Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is the term applied to the mildest and highest functioning end of what is known as the spectrum of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). Like all conditions along that spectrum, AS represents a neurologically-based disorder of development, most often of unknown cause, in which there are abnormalities in three broad aspects of development:
  • social relatedness and social skills; the use of language for communicative purposes; and certain behavioural and stylistic characteristics involving repetitive or perseverative features and a limited but intense range of interests.

It is the presence of these three categories of dysfunction, which can range from relatively mild to severe, which clinically defines all PDD's, from AS through to Autism. It is not clear that AS is just a milder form of autism or that the conditions are linked by anything more than their broad clinical similarities. Children with Asperger's Syndrome will often show powerful gifts in the scientific, technical, or artistic fields.
Diagnosis: Currently physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists rely on the behavioural criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) when diagnosing Asperger's Syndrome:
