printer friendly CATARACTS home more about us in your area conditions information ... how you can help search this site About 200 children a year are born in the UK with opacity of the lens of one or both eyes - a cataract. In most cases the lens will be cloudy enough to prevent clear vision developing and the child will need surgery to have the lens removed. For the child to focus thick glasses or a contact lens will be needed. The strength of these will be regularly changed as the child's eye grows, unlike an artificial lens placed inside the eye, which cannot be altered. In a few cases, if the eye is of normal size, a lens implant can be considered particularly if only one eye is affected. In these cases the child has to wear glasses in addition. If cataract is the only abnormality of the eye and the child is treated within the first few months of life, the prognosis for vision is good. It is expected that the child will attend mainstream school and read, although often will have difficulty with distance vision for the blackboard. It is most important that children born with cataracts in both eyes have regular eye examinations. In those cases with mild cataract, that does not need a surgical operation, glasses are often needed and the cataract may become denser with time. Children who have had cataract surgery require regular review of their vision development, glasses prescription, a check for glaucoma and examination of their retina.

The above picture shows a pair of Snap-On Pinhole Glasses, a form of pinhole glasses that can be very useful to people with cataracts. A cataract is an opacity in the lens that causes incoming light to scatter, causing poor vision. The wider the pupil, the more such scattering can occur. Pinhole glasses eliminate the scattering caused by the outer portion of the lens and thus improve the vision in some people. However, those people who need to wear their full prescription to get the best possible vision can't wear pinholes at the same time. These Snap-Ons are therefore designed to be worn over prescription glasses, adding the pinhole effect to the prescription lenses.

The lens in the eye is an unique physical structure that cannot be repaired or replaced, but instead accumulates any damage that may occur to it over time. About 90% of the material in the lens consists of long stringy proteins laid out like cord wood to allow nearly perfect light transmission. Damage to this precise structure can lead to a cataract. Cataracts are lens opacities that cause 50% of the blindness in underdeveloped countries. In the U.S., cataract surgery is already the most costly surgical expense: some $3.2 billion each year. Cataracts come in a variety of types. The most common type, called a senile cataract, becomes a vision problem almost exclusively in those over the age of 60, although the underlying damage begins decades earlier. Senile cataracts often start as a discoloration of the lens, with loss of vision occurring as this localized structural damage enlarges to form a distinct opacity. Diabetes, with its environment of high blood sugars, raises the risk for senile cataract about 40%. Besides the normal stress of aging and an acceleration of damage created in a high blood sugar environment, senile cataracts also appear to be hastened by exposure of the lens to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, with cataracts being found more commonly near the equator. Cataracts are expected to become even more numerous if loss of the protective ozone layer continues as predicted, because the ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet radiation.

Cataracts
Normally light enters the eye from the front, passes through a clear lens, and reaches the back of the eye so you can see. If the lens becomes cloudy like frosted glass, light cannot pass through, and you cannot see properly. 'Cataract' is the name of the 'cloudy' human lens.
a clear lens: no cataract
the light enters the eye directly a cloudy lens = cataract
the cataract scatters the light that enters the eye Think of a camera, with a lens that bends the light so that the light 'focuses' onto the film at the back. If this lens becomes scratched or greasy, it cannot bend the light in the correct direction, and the light is scattered in all directions. You may notice blurred or misty sight, see double, or notice colours appear much duller than they did previously.

What causes cataracts?
To understand cataracts, it first helps to know how the eye works. Light enters the eye through the cornea, which is the clear outer dome, then moves through the pupil, where the lens is. The lights is then transmitted and focuses images on the retina, which is like film in a camera. The macula is the central receptor part of the retina where we get sharp vision for tasks such as reading and driving. The retina then sends the images along the optic nerve to the brain for processing. bodyOffer(16576) A cataract is a gradual clouding of the human lens inside the eye. This lens is a small oval like structure consisting of a thin capsule (like clear plastic wrap) enveloping a bag of protein. The protein is crystal clear and colorless at birth, but over the years it discolors and clouds. It first yellows, then turns brown, and finally cloudy. When it becomes so cloudy that it interferes with vision, it is referred to as a cataract. At this time, the lens no longer transmits or focuses light clearly. A cataract is not a growth, a “skin,” or a disease, nor is it usually not a sign of eye or systemic disease.

Cataracts Cataracts develop when damage to the protein of the lens of the eye clouds the lens and impairs vision. Most people who live long enough will develop cataracts. Cataracts are more likely to occur in those who smoke, have diabetes , or are exposed to excessive sunlight. All of these factors lead to oxidative damage. Oxidative damage to the lens of the eye appears to cause cataracts in animals and people. It is unlikely that any nutritional supplements or herbs can reverse existing cataracts.

What is a cataract? Inside the eye, there is a lens which helps us to focus on what we see. As a part of the normal aging process, the lens can slowly become cloudy. This cloudiness of the lens is called a cataract. In some people, the cloudiness can become severe enough that it decreases vision. In other words, the cataract has become visually significant. Who gets cataracts? Most people who develop cataracts are older than age 60. The cataract forms as part of the normal aging process. Two conditions which may cause the development of cataract earlier than age 60 are diabetes and injury to the eye. Certain medications such as steroids may also cause cataract formation. How do I know if I have a cataract? People who have cataracts often notice a decrease in their vision. For example, they may have difficulty reading or driving. Another common problem is glare. Because of glare, people with cataracts may find it harder to see when there are bright lights on, such as when looking at the oncoming headlights of a car. An eye physician can tell if you have a cataract by examining your eyes. How are cataracts treated?

What are the risks associated with cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed type of eye surgery. In the vast majority of cases, approximately 95% of the time, the surgery is uncomplicated. Cataract surgery usually results in improved vision and a well satisfied patient. However, cataract surgery should never be trivialized. In a small percentage of patients, events occur which can lead to less than ideal results. Most of these events are known risks of the surgery itself and can occur even if the operation is performed well by an experienced surgeon. The occurrence of these events is often unpredictable. Patients should be aware of such possibilities when they decide to proceed with surgery. Some of the most common risks are reviewed in this article. Endophthalmitis
Ophthalmic surgeons normally make great efforts at the time of surgery to reduce the possibility of introacular infection, which is called "endophthalmitis". Patients usually receive topical antibiotic eye drops on the day of surgery. The surface of the eye and the skin around the eye are disinfected with antiseptic compounds, and the patient's face except the eye is covered with sterile drapes. Sterile techniques are used for all instruments, similar to those used for all modern surgeries. After the surgery is completed, surgeons prescribe topical antibiotic eye drops. Nonetheless, even with these precautions, an intraocular infection, called endophthalmitis, occurs in approximately one out of 3,000 cases. Symptoms and signs of endophthalmitis include excessive eye redness, pain, light sensitivity, and worsening vision.

As this thickening occurs, it prevents light rays from passing through the lens and focusing on the retina the light sensitive tissue lining located in the back of the eye. This clouding is caused when some of the protein which makes up the lens begins to clump together and interferes with vision. In its early stages, a cataract may not cause a problem. The cloudiness may affect only a small part of the lens, however, the cataract may grow larger over time and affect more of the lens, making it harder to see. As less light reaches the retina, it becomes increasingly harder to see and vision may become dull and blurry. While cataracts cannot spread from one eye to another, many persons develop cataracts in both eyes. What causes cataracts?

Cataracts are the number one cause of poor vision among adults. Over two-thirds of the population over the age of 60 have a vision problem from cataracts, and over 150,000 people undergo a cataract removal operation annually in the UK. Today, at Surgicare, a cataract can be surgically removed without discomfort and poor vision from cataracts can be improved 95% of the time. Just behind the pupil of your eye is the lens. This focuses the light entering the pupil so that it makes a clear image in the retina. The retina changes the image into a nerve impulse so that the brain can see it. Usually the lens of the eye is crystal clear so that light passes through it easily. If any cloudiness develops in the lens then it starts to block the light passing through and the patient begins to get a blurring of their vision. This clouding of the lens is called Cataract. When the blurring gets bad it is better to have the cloudy lens removed by an operation and replaced by a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an implant. A CATARACT INSIDE THE EYE WHAT ARE CATARACTS?
A cataract is simply the name given to a cloudy condition of the crystalline lens in your eye. As the lens becomes too cloudy, light cannot pass through it properly and so you are less able to see clearly. It's a bit like looking through a window which hasn't been cleaned for a while. Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness worldwide affecting 17 million people and in the UK is the number one cause of loss of vision in the UK for the over 55 age group. Cataract operations are the most common operation carried out on the NHS with over 2.3 million carried out every year and anyone reaching full life expectancy is more likely to have a cataract extraction than the 9 next most common operations combined. WHAT HAPPENS TO MY VISION WITH CATARACTS?
Because cataracts develop slowly, you are likely to experience a very gradual deterioration in your vision and you may not even notice that anything is wrong until the cataracts are well advanced. When fully developed, however, cataracts can cause a significant loss of vision. CATARACT SURGERY HISTORY
Before cataracts were extracted, the cloudy lens was dislodged using a lance by a process known as couching. Lances have been found from excavations in Greece dating back to between 1000-2000 years BC. Jaques Daviel, a French doctor, is credited with carrying out the first cataract extraction in 1753.

CATARACTS AND THE HUMAN EYE
THE HUMAN EYE The eye has several structures through which light passes before it is processed by the brain into images on the retina, thus producing sight: - Light rays first enter the eye through a transparent dome at the front of the eye called the CORNEA. - Light then passes through a watery fluid in the ANTERIOR CHAMBER, and then through the PUPIL, which is the round, black opening in the IRIS, the colored part of the eye. The pupil allows the proper amount of light to enter the inside of the eye. - Light then passes through the LENS, which is located behind the pupil. The lens is a very important part of the eye for focusing light. In the normal eye, the lens is a flexible bag of protein which, in young people, is crystal clear. The lens has the ability either to flatten or to thicken, thereby bringing objects into focus. - After the lens has focused the light rays, the rays pass to the back of the eye through a clear, jellylike substance called the VITREOUS BODY. - Finally, the light rays reach the RETINA, which contains many sensitive nerve cells that react to light images projected onto them.
