Equine Viral Encephalomyelitis(EVE)
    Definition
Viral Encephalomyelitis is an infectious mosquito-borne disease of horses characterised clinically by paralysis and other signs of nervous derangement. The same virus strains can cause serious human disease as well as infecting poultry and other farmed birds including quail, ostriches and emus. 1 - Epidemic Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis (VEE) 2 - Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (WEE) 3 - Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE) Birds, small mammals and possibly reptiles and amphibians are the natural reservoir of the virus. Transmission of infection to horses and man occurs following bites by mosquitoes or biting flies. The disease is not directly contagious between horses and man.
    Distribution
The virus strains which cause EVE are restricted geographical areas of North, Central and South America as their names suggest. VEE has spread into Central America, causing devastating epidemics as far north as Texas. The disease distribution is determined by climatic conditions as well as agricultural practices, such as irrigation, which favour the life cycle and spread of mosquitoes.

    M.E. - The Illness

    • M.E. can be described as an INVISIBLE CHRONIC ILLNESS
There are no visible symptoms to see such as a rash or a cut. Most M.E. sufferers are so ill or in so much pain that they are house-bound.  Thus, they are out-of-sight. M.E. is a chronic, debilitating multi-system disorder comprised of numerous symptoms which include extreme malaise, pain, cognitive dysfunction, and overwhelming fatigue.  At this time there is no cure for this illness.  M.E. has similar symptoms to many disorders, but should not be confused with them. The links at left will guide you through information regarding M.E. The information presented here is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather, to be a starting point for readers to find relevant information about M.E. The links to external web sites are not intended to be a complete listing of all M.E. sites on the internet.  However, you will discover that most of the links that are provided, have many more links to peruse.

Encephalomyelitis: Inflammatory disease of the brain and spinal cord. "Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis postinfectious encephalomyelitis see also Acute Viral Encephalitis and Aseptic Meningitis in Ch. 176) is characterized by perivascular CNS demyelination, which can occur spontaneously but usually follows a viral infection or viral vaccination (or, very rarely, bacterial vaccination), suggesting an immunologic cause. Acute inflammatory peripheral neuropathies that follow a viral vaccination or the Guillain-Barré syndrome (see Ch. 183 ) are similar demyelinating disorders with the same presumed immunopathogenesis, but they affect only peripheral structures."Merck Manual http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual/section14/chapter180/180a.htm "Measles Encephalomyelitis in a Patient With a History of Vaccination," Acta Paediatrica Japonica, vol. 37, number 3, June 1995, pp. 374-376: A twelve-year-old girl vaccinated with a live attenuated measles vaccine developed an encephalomyelitis ten years post-vaccine. "The patient’s definite history of measles vaccination, high titers of HI and IgG antibodies…indicated that this patient has an encephalomyelitis due to Secondary Vaccine Failure of measles. It is suggested that measles virus can be a pathogen of encephalitis without symptoms indicative of ordinary measles in individuals who received live attenuated measles vaccines." The disease is characterized by various neurological signs, including excitement, dementia, head pressing, and circling. Transmissions occurs by mosquitoes, and the disease is associated with areas inhabited by them and where winter temperatures are not severe. Vaccination before mosquito season and biannually in humid areas of the country is recommended. Initial dose should be boostered in 3-4 weeks. Horses should be revaccinated 2-3 times yearly thereafter. 900 Green Valley Rd. Beaver Dam, WI 53916 Phone 1-800-255-1181 Fax (920) 885-2812 5235 High Crossing Blvd.

Virus usually is not isolated from the nervous system, an allergic or autoimmune reaction is most likely. Usually preceded by a viral syndrome or vaccinations. Usually monophasic, but recurrent episodes may occur. Diseases that may trigger the demyelination: measles, rubella, Varicella-zoster, smallpox, mumps, influenza, parainfluenza, infectious mononucleosis, typhoid, mycoplasma infections, upper respiratory and other febrile disease vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, and rabies. Most common overall cause: Nonspecific upper respiratory infections and Varicella infections. Pathology No change occurs in the external appearance of the brain or spinal cord. Loss of myelin, with relative sparing of the axon. Microscopic: perivenular lymphocytic and mononuclear cell infiltration and demyelination.

Unfortunately, in 1988, what was historically known both as myalgic encephalomyelitis and as the well-documented epidemic neuromyasthenia was renamed “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” by employees at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who imposed the misleading “fatigue” term onto patients and researchers. In 1994, more damage was done when the CDC broadened the definition for CFS to include many diverse, unrelated diseases, for which “CFS” became an umbrella term. Currently, a government-appointed name-change workgroup has proposed a new umbrella term, Neuroendocrineimmune Dysfunction Syndrome (NDS ), under which Ramsay, Canadian, and other selection criteria subsets would be placed. M.E. (and its related syndromes) has often been called “the disease of a thousand names.” M.E. was a fair name based on observations at the time by well-meaning, knowledgeable physicians. But some names were politically motivated. Our group opposes the more damaging names that have been used in publications, specifically those employing the word "fatigue." Nevertheless, the research findings are important, and we are committed to publicizing the findings that fit our definitional framework even if they were published on under some of these other names.

ME starts like flu, but doesn't go away
Myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome has only been recognised by doctors in recent years, after originally being dismissed as 'yuppie flu'. The first symptoms are, in fact, similar to flu, but they do not go away and, in many cases, become worse. Some experts remain to be convinced of its existence, mainly because no one cause has been identified and symptoms often vary for different patients. What are the symptoms? The main symptoms are debilitating fatigue, muscle pain, mental fogginess, painful lymph nodes and, frequently, stomach pains. The cause of chronic fatigue cannot be explained by other conditions, such as depression, and it does not improve substantially after periods of rest. Some patients also have difficulty in concentrating, short-term memory impairment, sore throats, headaches and insomnia.
