What is a heart attack?

A heart attack occurs when an area of the heart is deprived of necessary oxygen-supplying blood, causing that part of the heart to be injured or die. Although heart attacks may appear to come on suddenly, damage to the heart is usually years in the making. How does it occur?
Many attacks are caused by coronary artery disease in which the arteries that supply the heart with blood have with time become narrowed or blocked by fatty deposits. When blood flow is decreased, the heart fails to receive the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. Because the heart must beat continuously, any interruption in its function is life threatening and immediate medical treatment is needed. Sometimes the heart is damaged so severely it triggers an uncoordinated twitching of the heart muscle called ventricular fibrillation that replaces the normally smooth contractions needed to pump blood through the body. When this occurs, no blood is pumped from the heart and regular rhythm must be restored within a few minutes or death results. What are the symptoms?

    ¤ New blood tests are being used to diagnose a heart attack more quickly and accurately.
    ¤ Getting treatment quickly at the first sign of distress is critical for lifesaving clot-buster medicine to work.
    Heart Disease is our nation's number one killer. Women account for almost half of the 500,000 heart attack deaths each year. At least 250,000 people die before they even get to the hospital. Many of these deaths could have been prevented by acting quickly and getting treatment, especially within the first hour of having chest pain. Between the ages of 40 and 60, as many women die of heart disease as breast cancer. Over a lifetime, heart disease kills five times as many women as breast cancer.
    Check Your Risk Factors for Heart Attack
    Smoking or daily exposure to second-hand smoke (at home or at work)
    Past heart attack or known coronary artery disease

It was a drug-free passing. That's the word from a British coroner who has ruled that Clash singer-guitarist Joe Strummer died in his sleep of a heart attack. a d v e r t i s e m e n t
And unlike many of his rock predecessors, Strummer's death was not drug-related, according to coroner Michael Rose, who announced his findings after conducting the autopsy last Tuesday. The singer, who cowrote some of the Clash's most politically charged anthems, including "London Calling," "Death and Glory" and "Know Your Rights," died December 21 in his home in Somerset, England, at the age of 50. At the time, his record label issued a statement saying Strummer "passed away peacefully." Despite the Clash's rebellious image, Strummer led a fairly straight life, reportedly preferring the occasional toke of marijuana to harder drugs like heroin and cocaine. He was also very much a family man to those who knew him. "This may be an unfashionable thing to say, but Joe Strummer was incredibly well brought-up and supposedly a really nice bloke," Andy Pemberton, editor of music magazine

FDA Approves Heart Attack Test
WASHINGTON, Feb. 14, 2003
(AP / CBS)
In a study of 200 patients, doctors were 50 percent accurate in ruling out a heart attack using just an EKG and troponin test. But when they added the new test, doctors accurately ruled out a heart attack 70 percent of the time, the FDA said.
(AP)
Doctors have won federal approval of a new blood test to help them tell which patients suffering chest pain aren't really having a heart attack.
Making that diagnosis can be surprisingly difficult.
Up to 5 million people go to U.S. emergency rooms each year complaining of chest pain, but only about one in five is having a heart attack, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Other ailments, from severe indigestion to gallstones, can mimic a heart attack - and up to half of chest-pain patients have atypical symptoms or test results that make diagnosis a challenge, said Dr. Steven Gutman, FDA's chief of clinical tests. In such cases, it can take from eight to 24 hours before emergency room doctors are sure the person's heart is OK and send him or her home. On Friday, the FDA approved a simple blood test that, when added to heart checks, could greatly improve doctors' ability to rule out a heart attack and send those patients home sooner. The $30 test, made by Ischemia Technologies Inc. of Denver, uses the metal cobalt to hunt changes in a blood protein that occur during a heart attack.

Please Help James Homepage. I am not a Charity, but i am asking for help. Hello and Thank you for visiting this site, even if you decide not to help. Ok briefly. I am a 43yr. Old man in Joplin, Missouri. I live with my fiancee' who is a older woman who has been on disability since she had a massive heart attack and triple bypass surgery in August of 1998. Doctors say she only has about 25% of her heart left working after that. I was layed-off of work Oct. 5 2001. Many of us, me included, were told by the company that we would be called back. The company sent me a letter telling i would not come back at the end of may 2002. All during June my health started failing, now this concerned me since i have been taking good care of myself for 5yrs now. I had a heart attack on July 15, same day my last unemployment check came in the mail. After the heart attack i returned home were i took it easy for a little while, but my body got worse. I had started to swell in the abdomen, now i had retained water because of the heart, but this was different. I swelled so bad that i could bearly breath or move most days. Plus the constant nausea and throwing-up. When i had left the hospital my doctor had said i needed a colonscopy. But i had no health insurance and very little money so i applied for Welfare, for the medicaid, and was denied twice. (Oct. 2, Nov.26) The hard part is deciding wether to apply again or not. In Missouri you need to be unemployed and have no income for 90 days before you can apply. If i get a job and can only work one day i can not apply for welfare for 90 days. Welfare makes you apply for Social Security at the same time, but naturally i was denied that also.

Aspirin, Still The Wonder Drug?
NEW YORK, June 5, 2002
(AP)
Online With Dr. Senay

Should you take aspirin? If so, how many? And when? Dr. Emily Senay has answers for your questions.
(CBS) Aspirin is often called the wonder drug because it's used to treat and prevent many illnesses. Early Show health correspondent Dr. Emily Senay reports on new findings on this medicine-cabinet staple and answers viewers E-mails.
Aspirin has come a long way since it made its debut more than 100 years ago. It is a tried and tested pain reliever extraordinaire for many of life's everyday aches, pains and headaches - the kind caused by life's hard knocks. But in the last 20 years, researchers have found its beneficial effects go far beyond the headache.
It is no joke these days when your doctor says "take two aspirin and call me in the morning," though it's probably more like "take 81 Mg. per day and make an appointment for your next regularly scheduled visit." It's becoming more and more common to prescribe daily low-dose aspirin for patients with heart problems or you are at risk of heart disease. That's because aspirin thins the blood by interfering with the ability of the blood to form clots, and reduces inflammation of the arteries, both which can contribute to heart attack and stroke. But research also has shown a number of other good uses for the heart patient.

Heart Attack
A heart attack occurs when the arteries supplying your heart with blood and oxygen become blocked. This loss of blood is what injures your heart muscle. A heart attack generally causes chest pain for more than 15 minutes, but it can also be silent and have no symptoms at all.
About half of heart attack victims have warning symptoms hours, days or weeks in advance. The earliest predictor of an attack may be recurrent chest pain that's triggered by exertion and relieved by rest.
The American Heart Association lists these warning signs of a heart attack. Be aware that you may not have all of them, and that symptoms may come and go.
  • Uncomfortable pressure, fullness or squeezing pain in the center of your chest, lasting more than a few minutes
  • Pain spreading to your shoulders, neck or arms
  • Light-headedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath
If you suspect a heart attack or even indigestion, act immediately:
  • Call 911.

    ETS EXPOSURE INCREASES HEART ATTACK RISK 20% [08/16]
    The largest study of its kind to date has confirmed that married persons living with a smoking spouse increase their risk of heart attack by approximately 20%. This means that environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) may be responsible for as many as 40,000 heart attack deaths each year in the U.S. Below is a summary of the study: CIRC Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Coronary Heart Disease in the American Cancer Society CPS-II Cohort Circulation: Volume 94, Number 04; Pages: 622-628; August 15, 1996 Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Coronary Heart Disease in the American Cancer Society CPS-II Cohort
    Kyle Steenland, PhD;
    Michael Thun, MD, MS;
    Cathy Lally, BS;
    Clark Heath, Jr, MD
    BACKGROUND: Thirteen of 14 epidemiological studies have shown an increased risk of ~20% for coronary heart disease (CHD) for never-smokers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), but this association remains controversial. If true, ETS might account for an estimated 35 000 to 40 000 heart disease deaths per year in the United States. CONCLUSIONS: Results are consistent with prior reports that never-smokers currently exposed to ETS have about 20% higher CHD death rates. However, our data do not show consistent dose-response trends and are possibly subject to confounding by unmeasured risk factors.

    Heart Disease Diagnosis Accurate. When used properly by a trained physician expert, the 3DMP Electrocardiogram (EKG) System can be an excellent aid to help physicians achieve an accuracy much greater than the conventional 12-lead EKG. In a like manner, a much greater accuracy from 3DMP can be obtained over other non-invasive or semi-invasive diagnostic modalities currently available on the market. Physicians and insurance companies have come to trust it for the early detection of mild to moderate disease and the early warning of severe disease stages. It presents the clinician with an impressive alternative to other, less effective means of coronary artery disease (CAD) diagnosis, for example: the thallium stress test, the standard EKG/signal average EKG (SAEKG), and the echocardiogram. Timely. Time is a critical factor when it comes to heart diagnosis and treatment. 3DMP makes inexpensive, accurate, diagnostic aid possible within half an hour. Non-invasive. The 3DMP EKG system is harmless and does not require any surgery, medications, or painful procedures.
