Egyptian children start their computer training as early as three
By Frank Gardner in Cairo
Egypt has been hosting a major international forum for the Internet.
It is the first time such a large event has been held to discuss the internet in the Middle East or Africa. Fewer than 1% of Egypt's 64 million population are online yet the country has one of the fastest growth rates of internet users in the region. Online translation possible from English into Arabic It is a trend the Egyptian Government here is backing all the way. At Egypt's first major internet forum this month, the Minister for Information Technology, Dr. Ahmad Nazif, said his country had a pioneering role in the industry. "As ancient Egyptians inscribed their vast knowledge on the walls of temples and tombs their descendants in recent history have made Egypt the intellectual capital of the Arab speaking world," Dr Nazif explains "Today we see Egypt as the main provider of Arabic content in literature and in arts, in science and in business, in the media and in the internet."

Josh was 12 when his parents bought him a computer for his room, thinking it would be useful now that Josh was in junior high school. He immediately took to internet and soon discovered email and chat rooms. His parents watched over his shoulder for the first few weeks and discussed the need to be cautious with personal information and made sure that Josh was steering clear of pornographic and violent websites. As they became comfortable with Josh’s behavior on the internet, they no longer watched over him while he chatted with online friends and played online games. Problems soon arose, however. Josh began to spend most of his time in his bedroom with the computer, and he was moody when he was forced to spend time with his family. His grades dropped from A’s and B’s to C’s and D’s. He was irritable when he was away from his computer and often stayed online into the early mornings. When his alarmed parents removed the computer from Josh’s room, he became very hostile and threatened to harm himself. Josh’s parents quickly sought counseling for internet addiction.

What is Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)?
What IAD is is difficult to define at this time. Research to date has been composed exclusively of exploratory surveys, which cannot establish causal relationships between specific behaviors and their cause. While surveys can help establish descriptions of how people feel about themselves and their behaviors, they cannot draw conclusions about whether a specific technology, such as the Internet, has actually caused those behaviors. Those conclusions which are drawn are purely speculative and subjective made by the researchers themselves. They cannot be supported by existing data. Do some people have problems with spending too much time online? Sure they do. Some people also spend too much time reading, watching television, and working, and ignore family, friendships, and social activities. But do we have TV addiction disorder, book addiction, and work addiction

Stumbling out into the front hall, you discover under the pile of unopened mail two bills and three final demands from British Telecom, the earliest dated six weeks ago. ... you get fired from your job, and all you can think is "At least I'll be able to spend more time on-line now." ... an attractive single person of your preferred sex and orientation asks you over to their place for supper and you try to persuade them to meet you on IRC instead. ... they finally manage to convince you to leave the house, and you turn up for the date with a bottle of cheap wine and a laptop with an internal modem. ... you contemplate doing a bank-job so that you can buy a leased line, but reject the idea on the grounds that if it goes wrong you probably won't be able to get a terminal in your cell in Pentonville. ... you finally open the curtains and discover that the other side of the street has been bulldozed and turned into a theme park, the local posse have spray-painted a mural on the front of your house, and there's been a rave in progress on your front lawn for the last week: "Now, when did that happen?" ... the lettering on the keys 'n', 't', 'p', 'k', 'i' and 'c' on your keyboard has been worn away to nothing, but that doesn't matter because you can type 'nntp kick' with your eyes closed anyway.

    INTERNET ADDICTION
The Internet can be an invaluable tool, turning the household computer into a gateway to the world. But for some, that gateway can slam shut and isolate them from their loved ones, Yes it is not a joke, the internet can be addictive!
The Internet is an amazing information resource. Students, teachers and researchers use it as an investigative tool. Physicians use it to learn more about unfamiliar diseases and the latest medical developments. Ordinary folks use it for shopping, banking, bill-paying and communicating with family and friends.
People all over the globe use it to connect with individuals of other countries and cultures. "It's opened up a whole new world," a friend explained. "You never know exactly where the journey will take you. Doors open and you take off in new directions. You can learn about anything, I mean anything! And you never have to be lonely, there's always someone out there to connect with."
But for some people, the computer world rivals their real world. Some people choose to commune with a computer, rather than their spouses and children. While they expand their horizons electronically, they insulate themselves from intimate settings and relationships. Internet abuse has been cited as a contributing factor in the disintegration of marriages and families and the collapse of promising careers.

    Net Addiction
A recent study has been conducted that said about 11 million people are actually addicted to the Internet. I don't think there is any such thing as Internet addiction:
If you looked up addiction in the dictionary, it would be defined as something along the line of not being able to physically live without a certain stimulus. Now, if you couldn't go on the internet for say, a week would you still be alive to whine and complain about it? Well I sincerely doubt you'd be dead on the floor.
People do not have fatigue and convulsions without access to the internet. Therefore it is not an "addiction". I admitt some people have cravings to go on but it isn't that serious. People who spend their lives online just need to chill out, turn it off and go outside, just get back to reality. It is one thing to spend your time online if you are bored out of your mind, but it is different if you live your entire life on it, if you can't imagine life without it.
Classifying this as an addiction is just an easy way out of coming to terms with the real problems in your lives. People don't want to face their problems.. admitt they might be coming on because there is something wrong in their lives. So, seriously people need to switch off the 'puter, walk away and sort out their lives.

The Internet has great potential for production, but it also has great potential for waste. Certain applications such as discussion groups, e-mail, and on-line news updates are important advances in communications. But on the other hand, applications such as MUDs and chat rooms tend to draw addictive personalities in and not let go until the victim's life is damaged severely. As with any addiction, there are many people that can use the Internet without a problem, and it enriches their lives instead of eclipsing it. To understand more about how addicts are drawn in it will help to look at a definition for Internet Addiction. Internet addiction is defined as "a maladaptive pattern of Internet use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress…" Through all my research and experience with Internet Addiction, the definition that I like to use is excessive and uncontrollable use of the Internet applications to the point that the subject's real life and relationships are affected negatively. This definition accounts for both the overuse of the Internet and the affect of the overuse on the life of the addict. Of course, as with any addiction, variations will be present in all individual cases. For some, the number of hours per week, which entails overuse, will be different, taking into account students and those who use the computer on a regular basis for legitimate reasons. Before I go into more detail about exactly what entails Internet addiction, I will address the question of whether or not this actually is a medical addiction.
