Leonard Holmes, Ph.D. http://mentalhealth.about.com
Please see the following updated features for more information on this subject: Ivan Goldberg, M.D. started it all as a joke. Internet addiction disorder was intended as a parody of addiction disorders. Instead it has become a subject of research, and some people seem to be building their careers on it. Janelle Brown, in a December 1996 Wired article quotes Goldberg as saying: "It's all bullshit.... There's no such thing as Internet addiction. The Internet is about as addictive as work: Sure, there are workaholics, but they're simply working to avoid the other problems in their lives."

Internet addiction has been been the subject of increasing clinical interest, although it remains a controversial topic. While some argue that the Internet is merely a communications medium and cannot be compared to addictive stimuli like drugs and alcohol, others point to the growing number of individual cases related to overuse of the Internet seen in psychotherapy practices. Similar problems have been reported with overuse of video and computer gaming before the arrival of the Internet, so it not the Internet per se that created this type of problem. One of the first articles documenting excessive dysfunctional Internet usage that merited clinical attention is case study of a 43 year old woman preoccupied with chat rooms which eventually destroyed her 17 year marriage.

Internet Addiction is a problem more common in society as Internet usage is increasing. The Internet can be informative, convenient, resourceful and fun, but for some, the addicted, these benefits become detriments. There are varying opinions on the subject. Some say that the Internet can be addicting to the point that it disturbs one's life and the lives of those around him. Others say that there is no such thing as Internet Addiction getting pleasure out of a computer is not the same as getting pleasure from cocaine or any other drug. Simple methods of prevention do exist that can reduce the negative effects of Internet use.

Warning: Internet Addiction
While no one WE know is addicted to the internet, in the interest of public awareness, we are making public these symptoms to point out to our members some of the sure signs of Internet Addiction. You are probably addicted to the Internet if:
You find yourself dreaming in HTML. You start typing a "com" after each period on your word-processor.com All of your friends have an ""@ somewhere in their names. You will not call your mother, because she doesn't have a modem, or e-mail address. You immediately check your email again, if the first time it says "no messages". Your phone bill weighs 30 lbs or more. You tell the cabbie http://321 Main Street/residence.htm. If you just tried to look up the address given in the previous symptom. You install a second computer, modem and phone line, so you can spend some quality time with your spouse. If, when your modem breaks, you put the phone line up to your mouth, and make raspberries trying to get connected.

INTRODUCTION Dr. David Adams, a Clinical Psychologist in Salt Lake City, Utah is seeing more couples these days with a similar problem: Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). " Spouses are saying he's not talking to me, he's spending all the time on the computer or she's talking to someone in Pennsylvania through e mails, " says Dr. Adams. Dr. Adams has been counseling couples for more than twenty years. And only recently has he noticed an alarming trend. More people are spending time on-line, at the expense of spending time with their family. The result, according to Dr. Adams" Increased incidences of depression and loneliness and decreased family ties ." All these symptoms stem from what Dr. Adams terms internet-itus. Bottom line - too much time on the internet. What kind of sites are people hitting? In a study just released today-at least 200,000 Internet users regularly surf in search of sex.

What is internet addiction?
What is Internet Addiction?
by Debra L. Moore, Ph.D. First, let's talk about addiction in general

We usually think about addictions as involving chemicals - chemicals such as alcohol, nicotine, or other drugs - drugs to which we can become tolerant - drugs that can create a physiological dependence. But most psychologists agree that any type of behavior that is stimulating or rewarding can become addictive. Any behavior that provides reinforcement or reward can become a habit or a compulsion, whether it is gambling, sex, video games, day-trading, food, wine, or beanie babies. When a behavior becomes more than a passion, when it becomes more than just a compulsion - and when it becomes harmful or maladaptive - we call it an addiction. Sometimes we dismiss evidence of addiction (like with sex or gambling) by saying that the addiction is "merely psychological." This is not, however, a relevant distinction. Research has shown that a "psychological addiction" can be just as powerful as one that is based on a physiological process, and that "psychological addictions" actually involve chemical and biological changes in the brain.

Therapeutic issues with internet addicted clients

Internet addiction is a new area of clinical practice and this article outlines sub-types and intervention techniques associated with Internet addiction recovery to assist therapists in assessment and treatment planning with this population. Internet addiction is typically defined as an impulse-control disorder that does not involve an intoxicant. Common symptoms include: a preoccupation with Internet use, lying about behavior, psychological withdrawal when offline, jeopardizing significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunities because of the Internet, and an inability to control use. Associated features of this disorder include sleep depravation, moderate physical complaints such as back strain, eyestrain, carpal tunnel syndrome and frequent time distortion when using the Internet.
Internet Addiction is a broad term covering a wide-variety of behaviors and impulse-control problems that is further categorized in five specific sub-types based upon the application that triggers the compulsion: 1. Cybersexual Addiction

TIPS to search 1 billion Web pages fast! Search the Web: "I began to suspect I had an Internet addiction problem when I would get up at 3 am to surf the Net and would then talk to a friend who hadn't been to bed yet. He was still surfing the Internet at 3 o'clock." Gary Tate and his friend are not the only ones suffering from 'Internet addiction disorder' or IAD. The term was coined in jest by New York psychiatrist, Ivan Goldberg, in early 1995. To his surprise, people were soon actually reporting such a disorder. Goldberg fabricated and posted a list of IAD symptoms on psycom.net , a site he operates and which sponsors Internet-based information services for mental health professionals. He intended it to be a parody of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) . To compound the joke, he also started an Internet addiction support group online "akin to holding an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in the middle of a cocktail party". The irony is that Dr Goldberg named a disease he did not believe existed. "I don't think Internet addiction disorder exists any more than tennis addictive disorder, bingo addictive disorder, and TV addictive disorder exist. People can overdo anything. To call it a disorder is an error," says Goldberg.

The Internet is a fine hobby or work tool until it causes problems with social partners, work, or school. Internet Abuse Pathological Internet Use   (PIU), Net Addiction   are just a few of the phrases used to describe what the American Psychological Association as long ago as 1997 accepted as a pathological behaviour or disorder. Not to be confused with the early zeal of a newcomer to the internet, Internet addiction is an extreme development. Net addiction has ruined lives. At FCS we have gained considerable experience and a marvelous success rate, dealing with Internet addiction problems. Building a support team which invariably includes the family doctor as well as the entire immediate family, our goal will be to return normalcy, balance, happiness (overall wellness) to your life in short order.  Surprisingly, we find the internet "junky" is not a high-tech computer 'geek' but more likely to be a nearly computer illiterate or 'enthusiastic tourist' to the internet world. Many computer professionals such as software research and development programmers; computer network system engineers and administrators; web designers and developers, all spend countless hours in front of a computer monitor, just as a bus driver spends countless hours "behind the wheel". So before you leap to the conclusion that you have a 'net junkie' in your household, make certain first that they are not your basic burgeoning genius (a.k.a. computer geek) just finishing their first two hundred thousand lines of program language to create the next generation of operating system software or  robotics programming.
