Common Characteristics of Liver Disease What are some common liver disease symptoms?

When diagnosing liver disease, the physician looks at the patient's symptoms and conducts a physical examination. In addition, the physician may request a liver biopsy, liver enzyme tests, an ultrasound, or a CT scan (computed tomography scan). Some common liver disease symptoms include the following, each of which are described briefly below: jaundice, cholestasis, liver enlargement, portal hypertension, ascites, liver encephalopathy and liver failure. What is jaundice?
Jaundice is a yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes due to an abnormally high level of bilirubin (bile pigment) in the bloodstream, which is then excreted through the kidneys. High levels of bilirubin may be attributed to inflammation or other abnormalities of the liver cells, or blockage of the bile ducts. Sometimes jaundice is caused by the breakdown of a large number of red blood cells, which can occur in newborns. Jaundice is usually the first sign, and sometimes the only sign, of liver disease.

The Liver Transplantation Program
The liver transplantation team at Children's Memorial consists of nationally and internationally recognized clinicians and researchers in the field who together have experience in managing more than 700 pediatric liver transplants throughout their careers. The program was established in 1997 with the arrival of a highly regarded surgeon from Canada, Riccardo Superina, MD, and renowned hepatologist Peter Whitington, MD, who assembled the team and have developed the premier pediatric liver transplant program that delivers the best care for infants and children with chronic liver disease.
Background on Liver Disease in Children
  • Serious liver disease affects approximately 1 in every 2,500 children in the United States. Illnesses such as biliary atresia (the most prevalent form of lethal chronic liver disease that strikes infants), acute viral hepatitis and other serious conditions can erode liver function leading to a spectrum of clinical problems ranging from impaired growth and development to death. Less than 15 years ago, most young children diagnosed with biliary atresia died before the age of two because they were considered too small to receive a liver transplant. Now, infants with this condition are routinely transplanted with high success rates. A major hurdle to overcome has been the scarcity of donors in this age group. This has led to advances in both cadaveric and living donor donation.

Digestive disorders affecting infants and children range from simple problems that most children experience from time to time, such as vomiting or diarrhea, to more serious (and possibly life-threatening) birth defects such as tracheoesophageal fistula, or illnesses such as appendicitis. Digestive and liver disorders can have significant effects on the health of a child. A healthy digestive system processes the foods and liquids that we eat, replenishing vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are vital for the body to function properly. Occasional vomiting or diarrhea may lead to dehydration, however, long-term problems with the digestive system and/or liver can deplete these important nutrients, causing malnutrition that affects a child’s physical and mental growth and development.

Because the liver is one of the most important and complex organs having a multitude of functions and subject to diverse disorders, any attempt at completeness in a brief discussion is futile. The following information, gleaned from the articles listed in the References , can only serve as an outline; the reader will need to consult the material in the Informational Links for more details. Normal Liver Function The liver, the largest organ in the body, is essential in keeping the body functioning properly. It removes or neutralizes poisons from the blood, produces immune agents to control infection, and removes germs and bacteria from the blood. It makes proteins that regulate blood clotting and produces bile to help absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins. This organ is the main industrial center of the body, and it has the enormous task of maintaining the body's metabolic equilibrium (homeostasis). The liver:

Good health is dependent on adequate nutrition and a functional gastrointestinal tract. Our research covers a range of problems including malnutrition, infectious diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, and intestinal failure. This work aims to develop better treatments to improve child health. We are recognised as a centre of excellence in training paediatric gastroenterologists from Australia and overseas.
Research Overview
The Luminal Gastroenterology group investigated motility disturbances in childhood, including constipation and reflux, as well as disturbances in epithelial barrier function. The Enteric Virus group focuses on the epidemiology of rotavirus (see separate listing). Research has expanded to include other viruses that cause gastroenteritis in children, such as calicivirus and astrovirus. A major aim is the development of vaccines against these pathogens. The World Health Organisation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have encouraged development of a rotavirus vaccine. The Nutrition group develops new therapies for more effective nutrition of children with intestinal failure and energy imbalance disorders. The

What are autoimmune liver disorders?
An autoimmune disorder is any reaction or attack of a person's immune system against its own organs and tissues. In the liver, the immune system can destroy liver cells and damage bile ducts. Chronic active hepatitis can be caused by an autoimmune disorder. What are metabolic liver disorders?
Two main metabolic disorders affect the liver:
  • Hemochromatosis - the absorption of too much iron from food. Instead of secreting the excess iron, the iron is stored throughout the body, including the liver and pancreas. The excess iron can damage these organs. Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease that can lead to liver disease, liver failure, liver cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
Wilson's Disease - the retention of too much copper in the liver. Instead of releasing the copper into the bile, the liver retains the copper. Eventually the damaged liver releases copper into the bloodstream. This hereditary disease can cause damage to the kidneys, brain and eyes, and lead to severe brain damage, liver failure and death.
