The vessels transport molecules to the venous angle of the neck where the lymph system joins the venous system. Are there different kinds of Lymphedema? Yes. Lymphedema can be either primary or secondary lymphedema. Primary lymphedema is usually due to either a congenital absence of, or abnormalities in, lymphatic tissue. It can be hereditary (Milroy Disease), lymphedema praecox (onset during puberty), or lymphedema tarda (onset later in life). Primary lymphedema is more prevalent in females than males. Secondary lymphedema is generally caused by an obstruction or interruption of the lymphatic system, usually caused by malignancies, infection, trauma, excision, or post-radiation fibrosis. Incidence It is not known the true number of persons suffering from lymphedema. Home Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid causing abnormal swelling of the arms, legs, breast, abdomen, neck or head. Lymphedema develops when lymphatic vessels are damaged or lymph nodes are removed (secondary), or when lymphatic vessels are impaired or missing (primary). Lymphedema occurs when the impairment becomes so great that the lymphatic fluid exceeds the lymphatic transport capacity. Lymphedema becomes apparent when the protein rich fluid builds up and swelling begins. STAGES OF LYMPHEDEMA Stage 1 (mild) - Upon waking in the morning the limb or affected area is almost a normal size.The tissue is still in a "pitting stage" ( when pressed by a finger the area indents and holds the indentation). Stage 2 (moderate) - The tissue is "non-pitting" (when pressed by a finger the tissue bounces back without leaving an indentation). The tissue has a spongy consistency. Stage 3 (severe) - The tissue at this stage is hard (fibrotic) and will be unresponsive to the touch. The swelling is irreversible and the limb is very large and swollen. Infections are possible at any stage of lymphedema but occurrence becomes greater as stages progress. A swollen limb, left untreated, becomes hard (fibrotic) and full of lymph fluid which is high in protein and a perfect medium for bacteria and infections.

"Bosom Buddies" is the only support group in Naples specifically focused on breast cancer and lymphedema. Our numbers have grown to 80 women - some about to undergo surgery, others still in radiation and/or chemotherapy and others totally through the ordeal. Some are presently coping with lymphedema, the "ballooning limb" syndrome, a common condition when lymph nodes have been removed or radiated. We range in age from the 30s to the 80s. One of our number is a 25 year survivor! Outside of the meetings, we stay in touch with one another including those who may be out of town for treatment. We will accompany new members to their initial radiation treatments, visit members during their hospital confinements and otherwise encourage and support them before surgery and during their recovery. Six of our members are currently certified in the Reach to Recovery Program. They are on call 7 days a week to provide initial support to women in the hospital undergoing breast cancer surgery and at home during their recovery, and to their families. Chances are that a relative or a friend of yours has had or will at some time have breast cancer. It is becoming epidemic. The statistics are grim. One in eight women will likely be afflicted. In Florida, breast cancer is the second major cause of death from cancer among women. The women of Collier County are not immune to this epidemic.

Many times a patient is sedated or under anesthesia and can not protect or prevent at risk procedures such as, injections, blood draws, IV insertion, blood pressure readings ect. By donning a hot pink Alert Lymphedema band on their wrist or ankle this will alert technicians to the risk. Although there are medical alert jewelry, in a medical setting, this can be overlooked as jewelry and not bring the desired attention to the extremity.
