Lymphedema Occasionally lymphedema follows treatment of a variety of cancers. It is often linked with breast cancer . (The majority of women with breast cancer will never experience lymphedema but some will) What is Lymphedema? Lymphedema is swelling from the lymph fluid that builds up in the body tissues. In other words, the lymph fluid is not completely circulating through the body and builds up in one of the body tissues. The buildup (swelling) usually occurs in the arm or leg. Why Does Lymphedema occur in breast cancer patients? Lymphedema occurs in breast cancer patients because if the breast is removed, surgeons usually remove groups of lymph nodes and vessels from the underarm. Removing lymph vessels and nodes alters the way fluid drains in the body. In breast cancer patients, the lymphatic system struggles to remove fluid from the arm and breasts. How can lymphedema be treated?

Lymphedema Format for Printing Lymphedema is the chronic swelling or feeling of tightness in the arm or hand due to an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the soft tissue of the arm. The condition occurs when lymph vessels, which normally carry excess fluid out of the limbs and back into central circulation, have had their flow interrupted. Axillary (underarm) lymph node removal is commonly performed on breast cancer patients to stage or treat their cancer. However, between 15% and 20% of breast cancer patients who undergo axillary lymph node removal develop lymphedema. According to the American Cancer Society, of the two million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., approximately 400,000 must cope with lymphedema on a daily basis. Main Menu: Lymphedema After Breast Cancer Surgery When breast cancer cells begin to escape from the primary tumor site in the breast, they often first travel to the lymph nodes under the upper arm. Therefore, it is often necessary to remove some or all of the axillary lymph nodes during breast cancer surgery ( mastectomy or lumpectomy ) to determine if the cancer has spread, and if so, to what extent.

(formerly the Lymphedema Support Group of the Greater Boston Area)
The Greater Boston Lymphedema Network (formerly the Lymphedema Support Group of the Greater Boston Area) has held meetings since January 1995. It was founded and organized by Marianne Lynnworth, Dr.rer.nat., who has primary lymphedema and lipedema. In May 1998 a Board of Directors was established to facilitate the growing needs of the organization. Meetings are held at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA. Generally we meet on the third Wednesday of each month, at 7:00 pm , skipping July, August and December. For speakers, we invite doctors or other professionals with training relevant to lymphedema. In the past, we have covered: Manual Lymph Drainage, Exercises, Myofascial Release, Complete Decongestive Therapy, Skin care, Fitting of Compression garments, Nutrition, Lymphedema review, Bandaging, Manual Self-Care and Coverage by Insurances and HMOs. The original purpose of the group has been to supply some personal support and information to lymphedema patients. The complaint most frequently heard from new members is the lack of understanding and empathy by members of the medical profession. We have created a network of lymphedema friends who try to help each other by sharing information and maintenance advice. Members who have already lived with lymphedema for many years can calm down the fears of other members who are newly confronted with this affliction.

About Lymphedema About the Therapists About the Therapy Related Sites What is Lymphedema? Lymphedema is a swelling of some area of the body, usually an arm or leg, resulting from an accumulation of lymph fluid. Lymph, the transparent fluid that is collected from body tissues, is normally removed via the lymphatic system. However, in lymphedema the body’s ability to circulate lymph is compromised for some reason. Instead of the usual transport of proteins, fat, water, and cells from the lymph vessels into the circulatory system where they can be utilized or removed, the lymph fluid accumulates and causes swelling and pain in the limb. The lymphocytes, cells of the immune system which are vital in fighting bacteria, cannot circulate normally and the limb becomes more susceptible to infection. What causes Lymphedema? One type of lymphedema, called primary lymphedema, is a condition that a person may have from birth or may develop it in adolescence or even after age 35. Primary lymphedema appears to be due to some physical defect in the lymphatic vessels or nodes. Another type of lymphedema, one more commonly seen in physician’s offices, is called secondary lymphedema. Lymphedema of this type occurs after trauma to an area of the lymphatic system, most commonly from surgery which involves removal of or damage to the lymph nodes. It can also occur after radiation treatments of the lymph nodes. Since surgical removal of the lymph nodes and radiation of the lymph nodes is frequently done in breast, uterine, or prostate cancer treatment, lymphedema sometimes occurs after such a procedure.

LYMPHEDEMA

LYMPHEDEMA Lymphedema is a long-term swelling condition that can occur in the adjacent hand, arm, and/or the entire quadrant (chest, side and back) as a result of breast cancer surgery and radiotherapy. The lymphatic system drains excess protein and water from the blood and natural and foreign substances from the tissues. This lymph fluid is filtered by the lymph glands and then returned to the blood system. When the lymphatic system has been damaged or blocked, lymph fluid builds up and causes mild to severe swelling in the hand or arm. This condition reduces oxygen in the tissues, slows healing and creates an ideal environment for infection and serious risk to your general health. Lymphedema can occur at the time of surgery and treatment, or months or years later. It is important that women diagnosed with breast cancer are informed about the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of lymphedema.
CAUSES
  • surgical removal of the lymph nodes
  • radiotherapy

What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the medical term for swelling caused by the buildup of fluid in the soft tissues due to a blockage of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system and consists primarily of lymph vessels, nodes, and tissues. The lymphatic system removes impurities from the circulatory system and produces cells that are necessary for fighting infection.
What causes lymphedema?
Lymphedema in cancer patients results from scarring after the surgical removal of lymph nodes or after radiation therapy. The lymphatic system becomes obstructed and swelling in the arms or legs is the result.
How often does lymphedema occur?

Wasting Away in Lymphedema-ville
Every day nearly I get emails or phone calls from people who are newly diagnosed with lymphedema and are afraid that their lives will be changed negatively.
I always point out to 'newbies' that life isn't bad for most of us. Some unfortunate people end up in wheelchairs or bedridden but most people continue to be able to do most things-they just must adjust their lifestyle a bit. The biggest changes are psychological ones for most of us-dealing with our feelings of 'ugliness' because the condition makes us look a bit different. For we older onset people (47 years old when it came on me) it isn't so difficult because we have our identity pretty much intact but it is a major problem for younger people. But slowly but surely you will get yourself moving with it.

What is lymphedema?
Maybe, when you happened to land incidentally on this page, you wonder what lymphedema is? Imagine that you'd look like this: Then one day all your lymph nodes were removed
and there is a great chance that you might wind up looking like this: Or worse. But in that case your blood vessels would have collapsed and you wouldn't be around anyway.
The chance that you'll get lymphedema may be larger than you think. For instance, you have a great chance to get stuck with lymphedema when you get cancer. During a cancer operation lymph nodes are taken away. The nodes are investigated to see if the cancer has not spread.

Lymphedema
  • Introduction Overview
    Introduction
This patient summary is adapted from the summary on lymphedema written by cancer experts for health professionals. This and other credible information about cancer treatment, screening, prevention, supportive care, and ongoing trials, is available from the National Cancer Institute. Lymphedema is the buildup of lymph (a fluid that helps fight infection and disease) in the fatty tissues just under the skin. The buildup of lymph causes swelling in specific areas of the body, usually an arm or leg, with an abnormally high amount of tissue proteins, chronic inflammation, and thickening and scarring of tissue under the skin. Lymphedema is a common complication of cancer and cancer treatment and can result in long-term physical, psychological, and social issues for patients.
    Overview
The lymphatic system collects excess fluid and proteins from the body tissues and carries them back to the bloodstream. Proteins and substances too big to move through the walls of veins can be picked up by the lymphatic vessels because they have thinner walls. Edema may occur when there is an increase in the amount of fluid, proteins, and other substances in the body tissues because of problems in the blood capillaries and veins or a blockage in the lymphatic system.

79. CVM-Swollen Legs (Lymphedema)
Center for Vascular Medicine in Pittsburg offers this information on lymphedema.
http://www.centervascularmedicine.com/swolegs.html
Swollen Legs (Lymphedema) Swelling of the legs may be caused by many diseases including heart failure, kidney disease, venous disease and disease of the lymphatics. This discussion will cover lymphedema which is an accumulation of fluid and protein that causes swelling in the arms and legs. This can occur when lymphatic vessels are impaired. Lymphedema can develop from idiopathic or unknown causes a situation known as primary lymphedema. This may start at birth (congenital lymphedema), in the teens (lymphedema praecox) or late in life (lymphedema tarda). Breast, abdominal or groin surgery may result in secondary lymphedema because of disruption of the lymph vessels or removal of lymph nodes from the surgical procedure. Radiation therapy, limb trauma and repeated or chronic infection may also affect the lymphatics.
If a patient notices persistent swelling of a limb and the skin becomes hard and less elastic, the cause may be lymphedema. Patients who have lymphedema are at a high risk for infections.
Depending on the severity of the lymphedema, a treatment plan will be developed based on decongestive therapy methods which consist of manual lymphatic drainage, bandaging, proper skin care, sequential gradient pumps and compression garments. Surgery is rarely used.
