*** Last News Update 9/1/02 *** Click here to check out the latest update Joey Christensen is 8 years old. He's a curly top, loves Pokemon and Beanie Babies, is a Disney nut like his parents, has traveled to far off places like New Jersey, Chihuahua (Mexico), California and Florida, has an extremely creative mind, and has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Burkitt's Lymphoma . This disease is also called B-Cell Leukemia , and although it's fairly common in Africa, in America, only about 100 people a year are diagnosed with it. Of these, apparently the majority are young boys aged 2-11. Burkitt's is one of the most agressive cancers that a person can get - apparently it can regenerate itself in less than 36 hours in some cases. The disease is generally classified into four stages, Stage 4 being the most advanced. Fortunately, it is also very responsive to Chemotherapy treatments. On September 23, Joey went to the hospital with stomach pains, and a blockage was discovered in his large intestine. The doctors were very vague about what the blockage could be, and we had originally assumed that Joey had swallowed something he shouldn't have. As it turned out, a large malignant tumor had grown to the point where it was blocking digestion. The surgeons removed the tumor, and inserted a special double-tube called a Hickman Catheter into Joey's chest. This catheter has one end sticking out of his chest, and is used for administering Chemotherapy, and also for blood transfusions, IV fluids, and acquiring blood samples. It's been a godsend - Joey will seldom be getting pricked by a needle during this treatment, since everything can go through the Hickman.

The disease can spread to adjacent lymph nodes and later may spread outside the lymph nodes to the lungs, liver, bones, or bone marrow. The cause is not known. The incidence is 2 in 10,000 people. Issue 3: Summer 1998 Feline Lymphoma The cat with lymphoma may demonstrate only very vague problems. Progressive lack of appetite, lethargy and weight loss are most common. Depending on which organs are affected, other signs such as chronic diarrhea, vomiting and difficulty in breathing may occur. Many diseases can cause these signs, and as with any problem, diagnosis should be based on examination by your veterinarian and appropriate tests. Diagnostic testing may involve blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound and biopsy procedures. In some cases surgery may be recommend for confirmation of diagnosis and possible initial treatment. Many forms of lymphoma in the cat are treatable with surprisingly good initial results. Cure, however, is unlikely. Unfortunately the average survival of the cat with lymphoma is only six months. Every cat with lymphoma should be evaluated for prognosis based on clinical stage (an estimate of the progression and severity) of disease and appropriate treatment possibilities then determined. There will be individual animals that can survive for several years with a very good quality of life. There will also be those instances in which your veterinarian will find it difficult to recommend treatment due to very advanced disease. The major issues will involve prognosis, quality of life, availability and costs of appropriate treatment.

    What is Genetic Toxicology?
    • Genetic toxicology is the study of chemicals and other agents which damage genes and which are likely to cause cancer and other mutations. Because various cancers possess heritable changes to cells, mutations have long been believed to be the leading cause of these diseases. Detection of mutagens, therefore, is a fast means of identifying potential carcinogens in our environment. However, mutations come in various types, ranging from single nucleotide changes in the DNA up to whole chromosome alterations.
To date, the only mutagen detection system capable of detecting almost this entire spectrum of genetic damage is the mouse lymphoma assay, which will be described in detail in this essay.
    My Qualifications:
    • I have been active as a Genetic Toxicologist for over 25 years, collaborating with numerous talented colleagues in the field during this period. For the last 20 of those years, I headed the Genetic Toxicology laboratory at Burroughs Wellcome Co. where I was actively encouraged to pursue my basic research activities. Success in this was due largely to working with a highly motivated technical staff. For a more complete resume and publications, click
