Myositis literally means 'inflammation of the muscles'. This term covers a number of related illnesses including Dermatomyositis, Polymyositis, Juvenile Dermatomyositis and Inclusion Body Myositis. These diseases fall under the classification of 'Autoimmune' diseases, in that they are the result of abnormal immune responses (which the body would normally use to fight off diseases) attacking normal tissues - in this instance, the muscles. Thankfully these diseases are very rare, and to date, no-one really knows what causes them. As these diseases affect the muscles and connective tissues of the body, the main symptom is muscular weakness, which may be progressive and can be severely disabling, affecting in the majority of cases the whole body. People of any age and sex can develop 'Myositis', and depression and a general feeling of misery can frequently ensue. These diseases are not catching and there is no way to predict who may become affected. They can usually be suppressed by drugs which often have side effects which can promote worrying problems of their own. As yet there is no true cure for the disease, but many sufferers can go into partial or complete remission. Many sufferers need physiotherapy to prevent muscle shrinkage and to keep them mobile. Some fortunately do get better, but for the majority it is a case of coping with the disease and trying to live as near a normal life as possible. Some less fortunate do need a wheelchair from time to time while the disease is at its height.

Myositis is the term for illnesses that involve chronic muscle inflammation ("myo" means muscle and "itis" means inflammation). "Myositis" refers to several different illnesses, including polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and inclusion body myositis. All forms of myositis involve chronic, or persistent, muscle inflammation. This muscle inflammation almost always results in weakness, and less often in heat, swelling, and pain of the muscles. Myositis can affect many parts of the body. Sometimes the joints, heart, lungs, intestines, and skin can become inflamed. Some forms of myositis, like dermatomyositis ("dermato" refers to the skin), result in particular rashes over the knuckles, around the eyes, or sometimes in other parts of the body. Other forms of myositis occur in children. Some forms are seen with other connective tissues diseases, like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis . Still other forms may occur in people with tumors. Rarely, myositis can occur in a single part of the body, such as one arm, one leg, or just the muscles that move the eye.

There is no standard course of treatment for IBM. The disease is unresponsive to corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs. Some evidence suggests that intravenous immunoglobulin may have a slight, but transient, beneficial effect in a small number of cases. Physical therapy may be helpful in maintaining mobility. Matsen, III, M.D. Last updated May 1, 2002 Symptoms of myositis Symptoms The major symptom of myositis is muscle weakness. Hip and shoulder muscles are most likely to be involved. This often results in difficulty combing hair; putting on heavy clothes; getting out of a bathtub, bed, chair, or car; and climbing stairs. Other muscles sometimes affected are those in the front of the neck, making it difficult to raise your head when lying down. Occasionally, other neck and throat muscles are affected, making it hard for some people to swallow, sing, or even speak clearly. If your chest muscles or lungs are affected, you may have trouble breathing. Many people with myositis learn ways of compensating, however, and adjust so well that even they are not aware of the slow, gradual, progression of their disease. People with dermatomyositis may develop a bumpy, patchy, reddish or purplish skin rash on the face, around the eyes (called heliotrope rash), on the knuckles, elbows, or knees (called Gottron's papules), or over the chest or back. Some people have puffy eyelids, wrists, or hands as a result of myositis. A person with myositis also may develop a rash around the base of the fingernails, overgrowth of the cuticle, or cracking and bleeding of the skin on the sides and tips of the fingers.
