Current Research: Our research is focused on how alterations in development and social experience affect the central nervous system, particularly brain dopamine function. This focus is reflected in the following projects: We are examining the neurobiological basis of repetitive movement disorders (stereotyped, self-injurious, and compulsive behavior) in mentally retarded persons. This project, using biochemical, psychopharmacological, and neuropsychological methods is testing the hypothesis that these behavioral disorders are due to a developmental insult to central dopamine and serotonin systems. Current findings support a dopamine deficiency model and suggest the efficacy of serotonergic medications. A complementary focus is our study of the development, function, and neurobiological basis of spontaneous abnormal stereotyped behavior in wild-type muroid rodents (deer mice). These studies will provide important information about the function, pathophysiology and treatment of repetitive behavior disorders in humans. Moreover, these studies will allow us to address basic brain mechanisms that mediate environmentally-induced stereotyped behavior, and the function of such behavior for the biological organism. In addition, we are examining the brains of non-human primates who experienced early social deprivation. This early insult results in spontaneous stereotyped and self-injurious behavior.

The clinic is staffed by licensed clinical child psychologists and doctoral students affiliated with the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology. The CADC provides comprehensive assessment and intervention services for children and adolescents, ages 3 to 17, and their families. INITIAL EVALUATION PROCEDURE A comprehensive assessment is conducted by the staff and involves separate structured interviews with children and their parents. The committee also concludes that the evidence is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relationship between thimerosal exposures from childhood vaccines and the neurodevelopmental disorders of autism, ADHD, and speech or language delay.

Oct. 1, 2001 Link Between Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Thimerosal Remains Unclear Other Links: Questions and Answers IOM Report (pdf format) Thimerosal Research Summary WASHINGTON — Current scientific evidence neither proves nor disproves a link between the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. While very few vaccines given to children in the United States today still contain thimerosal, prudence dictates that precautionary measures be taken to decrease thimerosal exposure even further. Thimerosal is used in some vaccines and other pharmaceutical products to prevent bacterial contamination. Vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella; varicella; and polio have never contained the preservative. However, until recently, several other vaccines on the recommended childhood immunization schedule in the United States did. They are now manufactured without thimerosal, but an unknown, probably small number of vaccine doses for hepatitis B; diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; and haemophilus influenzae type B, a form of bacterial meningitis, are still on clinic shelves. These supplies should not be used when alternatives are available, said the committee that wrote the report. "Most children in the United States being immunized today and in the future are unlikely to receive a vaccine that contains thimerosal," said committee chair Marie McCormick, professor of maternal and child health at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. "In those few cases where only supplies containing the preservative are available, the vaccines should be administered rather than foregoing immunization. While the health effects of thimerosal are uncertain, we know for sure that these vaccines protect against real, proven threats to unvaccinated infants, children, and pregnant women."

Over the past 15 years I have been involved in clinical services delivery, clinical research, and administration. Clinically, I have a specific interest in differential diagnosis of language and motor-speech disorders in children with congenital and acquired neurologic disorders. I believe strongly that intervention programs for young children with neurodevelopmental disorders are often misguided without a clear and accurate diagnosis. My clinical research activities have focused on understanding the cognitive-linguistic processes associated with the communication deficits of children with acquired and neurologic communication disorders. Finally, through my position as Director of the Department of Audiology and Communication Disorders at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh I have developed expertise in the areas of clinical program development, construction of performance standards and the development of leadership skills in professional staff members.
