    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease that swiftly robs patients of both quality and quantity of life. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. In 2001, an estimated 29,200 new cases will be diagnosed, and 28,900 people will die from the disease. Most of these tumors will be ductal adenocarcinomas, from which there currently is little chance of long-term survival median survival is six months or less, and only four percent of patients are alive five years after diagnosis. Given its incidence and almost universal fatality, substantially increased research efforts are clearly warranted to understand, prevent, and control this disease. Pancreatic cancer has been understudied in both basic research laboratories and the clinic. In terms of total research dollars, total numbers of researchers, and numbers of researchers who are highly focused on this disease, pancreatic cancer lags significantly behind all of the most common tumors, despite their far more favorable survival rates. For example, in 1999, pancreatic cancer research received only $17.3 million in National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding.

Pancreas / Pancreatic Cancer Description of Pancreatic Cancer Cancer of the pancreas is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. The pancreas is about 6 inches long and is shaped something like a thin pear, wider at one end and narrowing at the other. The pancreas lies behind the stomach, inside a loop formed by part of the small intestine. The broader right end of the pancreas is called the head, the middle section is called the body, and the narrow left end is the tail. The pancreas has two basic jobs in your body. It produces juices that help you break down (digest) your food, and hormones (such as insulin) that regulate how your body stores and uses food. The area of the pancreas that produces digestive juices is called the exocrine pancreas. About 95% of pancreatic cancers begin in the exocrine pancreas. The hormone-producing area of the pancreas is called the endocrine pancreas. Only about 5% of pancreatic cancers start here. This statement has information on cancer of the exocrine pancreas. For more information on cancer of the endocrine pancreas (also called islet cell cancer) see the PDQ Patient Information Statement on Islet Cell Carcinoma. Cancer of the pancreas is hard to find (diagnose) because the organ is hidden behind other organs. Organs around the pancreas include the stomach, small intestine, bile ducts (tubes through which bile, a digestive juice made by the liver, flows from the liver to the small intestine), gallbladder (the small sac below the liver that stores bile), the liver, and the spleen (the organ that stores red blood cells and filters blood to remove excess blood cells). The signs of pancreatic cancer are like many other illnesses, and there may be no signs in the first stages. You should see your doctor if you have any of the following: nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss without trying to lose weight, pain in the upper or middle of your abdomen, or yellowing of your skin (jaundice).

29,000 people in the United States and 60,000 Europeans will learn that they have pancreatic cancer this year. In 1995 this site was founded to aggregate current information about pancreatic cancer for them and others worldwide who are afflicted with this condition. Since that time the site manager has changed but the message remains. The Pancreatic Duct is intended to offer a solid introduction to pancreatic cancer. It is intended to provide credible information about pancreatic cancer to enable the patient and their loved ones to learn about the disease. To help them to understand and better accept what is happening to them. And to help them participate effectively as an active part of their health care team. Information about the founder of this site and his experiences with pancreatic cancer are located in the Founder section.

Frequently Asked Questions What are the symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer? Pancreatic cancer usually does not cause symptoms early on. The cancer may grow for some time before it causes pressure in the abdomen, pain or other problems. In many cases, the cancer has spread outside the pancreas by the time it is found. When symptoms appear, they depend on the location and size of the tumor. If the tumor blocks the common bile duct so that bile cannot pass into the intestines, the skin and whites of the eyes may become yellow, and urine may become dark. This condition is called jaundice . Pain often develops in the upper abdomen and sometimes spreads to the back. Cancer of the pancreas can also cause nausea, loss of appetite, depression, weight loss, and weakness. These symptoms may be caused by cancer or by other, less serious problems. Only a doctor can correctly diagnose the cause of the symptoms. What diagnostic tests are used to determine the presence of pancreatic cancer?

In Memory of Peter J. Brignola I armed myself with all of the information I could, when we found out my dad had Pancreatic Cancer. I found that the prognosis is extremely grave. Although there is research being done in this area, detection is extremely difficult. Pancreatic Cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in America. By the time most people experience symptoms, the cancer has spread to other organs. Approximately, 28,300 Americans will be diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer this year. Only 19% of them will survive one year after diagnosis.
I have become a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. They dedicate more money to cancer research than any other private, non-for-profit, non-governmental funder of cancer research in the United States.
I ask that you open your hearts, and make a donation to the American Cancer Society, In Memory of Peter J. Brignola. We can no longer stay silent about this very silent disease. By simply making a donation, we can offer Pancreatic Cancer patients in the future, more treatment options, raise awareness, and promote early detection. Make a difference today, and send a donation to:
