Acquired disorders of platelet function
Acquired thrombopathias should be suspected in animals with specific diseases and treated with certain drugs. Platelets can have increased (resulting in thrombosis) or decreased function (resulting in hemorrhage) in these situations. The risk of bleeding is unpredictable and typically less severe and consistent than inherited disorders. Although abnormal platelet function occurs in these diseases, there may be other causes for the excessive hemorrhage seen in these conditions, such as thrombocytopenia. However, it should be recognised that platelets are not functioning normally in these situations and drugs that may exacerbate this should be avoided in these patients.
Conditions in which there is decreased platelet function include neoplasia, monoclonal gammopathies, infectious disease, hepatic disease, renal disease, pancreatitis, DIC and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.
  • Neoplasia : In essential thrombocythemia and acute megakaryocytic leukemia, platelet aggregation and adhesion are defective. This can also occur in other neoplastic conditions, including chronic myeloid leukemia.
  • Monoclonal gammopathy : Very high gamma globulin concentrations associated with some lymphoid or plasma cell neoplasms and atypical responses to some infectious diseases (e.g. Ehrlichiosis) can interfere sufficiently with platelet function

Acquired thrombocytopenia, usually immune-mediated, is the most common hemostatic disorder you will encounter in private veterinary practice. Introduction
Thrombopoietin (Tpo) is a haematopoietic growth factor that stimulates the development of megakaryocyte precursors, megakaryocytes and platelets. The existence of such a factor was already suggested in 1958 (Kelemen et al , 1958) and demonstrated in the early sixties by studies in rats (Odell et al , 1961). However, attempts to obtain thrombopoietin were unsuccessful in the years thereafter.

Blood clot formation Blood clots Alternative names Return to top Acquired qualitative platelet disorders; Acquired disorders of platelet function Definition Return to top Non-hereditary diseases or associated conditions that cause the platelets (the blood cells essential for coagulation) to not function properly. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Platelets are blood cells that are essential for blood clotting. Platelet disorders can include inappropriate number of platelets (too many or too few), or normal number but inappropriate functioning of the platelets. Any platelet disorder affects blood clotting.
Disorders of platelet function can be caused by congenital diseases or acquired conditions. Acquired platelet function disorders are disorders of inappropriate platelet function, and that develop as a result of another disease or condition (acquired). In many cases, the platelet count may be normal or even elevated, but evidence of a bleeding disorder will be present.
