Illnesses/Diseases Acute Prostatitis Definition Acute prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate, a condition often heralded by symptoms similar to those of cystitis: frequent, painful urination and nocturia (awakening from sleep to urinate). There may also be a discharge from the urethra. Prostatitis may also be accompanied by fever, chills, and pain in the perineal region behind the scrotum, the lower back, or above the pubic bone (the suprapubic region). Cause The most common cause of acute prostatitis is bacterial infection, which can result from infected urine. Diagnosis The prostate itself will be very tender, which is evident with a rectal examination. Fever and pain in the area above the pubic bone may be present. Examination of the urine may reveal signs of infection. Treatment Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, given orally or intravenously, depending on the severity of the infection. Untreated prostatitis may result in an abscess that is more resistant to antibiotic therapy and may require surgical drainage. Prevention In the presence of a known urinary tract infection, urologic manipulation, which can cause urosepsis, should be avoided unless necessary.

Patient Instructions Prostatitis is a very common condition affecting many if not most men at some time in their lives. Like sinusitis, it can be acute, chronic, infectious, allergic, inflammatory or psychosomatic. While frequently disquieting and unpleasant it is rarely serious or life threatening. . There is no relationship between prostatitis and prostate cancer! Contrary to folklore, prostatitis, no matter how severe or long lasting, has not been shown to lead to prostate cancer, There are three general types of prostatitis, bacterial prostatitis, the most common type, generally associated with a bacterial infection non-bacterial or inflammatory prostatitis when no infection is present; and prostatosis , or chronic pain in the prostate a subset of non-bacterial prostatitis. A commonly related condition is semino-vesiculitis . The seminal vesicles lie above and behind the prostate and produce the seminal fluid. The prostate is built like a sponge, with many pockets, called ascini. With all forms of prostatitis, these ascini become blocked and distended causing symptoms. Obviously, when bacteria are present, these blocked ascini become mini abscesses, like acne. It may be difficult to determine when bacteria are present, because they may be trapped in the ascini, and not easily obtained for identification, or may be very difficult to culture in the laboratory, especially if antibiotics have been recently taken. Similarly, some of these pockets may remain infected despite adequate antibiotic treatment causing the condition to recur.

    Prostatitis
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate. Bacterial prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate caused by a bacterial infection. This may be either acute (starting suddenly) or chronic (a persistent, long-term infection). In non-bacterial prostatitis, which is the most common form of the disease, no infection can be found. Acute bacterial prostatitis is usually caused by bacteria from the bowel entering the bloodstream. The cause of non-bacterial prostatitis is uncertain. It has been suggested that urine is forced into the channels and ducts of the prostate gland, causing irritation and inflammation. Once inflammation has occurred within the prostate, it tends to recur. Patients with prostatitis suffer pain and discomfort in the area around the anus and scrotum, the area in between (the perineum), and just above the pubic bone. Men with the condition may have to urinate frequently and this can be uncomfortable. There may also be a burning sensation at the time of urination and/or some discomfort during ejaculation. Figure 15: Sites of pain Risk factors Men who have an increased risk of prostatitis include those who have long-term catheterization and those who have urinary tract infections that remain untreated. In some instances it is thought that unprotected anal intercourse may be another risk factor for this condition. Prostatitis most commonly affects men in the age range 30–50, but a man of any age can be affected.

Dear Who Knows?, Prostatitis is inflammation or infection of the prostate gland. The symptoms include fever, chills, pain in the genital region, frequent urination, and in some cases, painful ejaculation. This disorder is more common in men between 30-50. It is often caused by a bacterial infection that has spread from the urethra. The infection may or may not be sexually transmitted. To diagnose prostatitis, the physician examines the prostate by inserting a gloved finger into the rectum; the gland would be tender and enlarged if infected. To investigate the cause of the infection, tests are carried out on a urine sample, and on urethral secretions obtained after massaging the prostate gland. Treatment is with antibiotics, although the condition may be slow to clear up and tends to recur.

PROSTATITIS This is the most-neglected male disease in the U.S. It strikes more men than either prostate cancer or prostate enlargement. It can be one of the most miserable diseases inflicted on men. It strikes them at younger ages. It lasts longer. John Garst, Athens, Georgia, wrote us five years ago how he got sick with prostatitis at age 33, still had it at age 63. He had seen a doctor on average eight times a year for 30 years…including times contemplating the release of suicide. Garst estimates that the disease has cost him more than $270,000. Urologists estimate that one in every four men who see a doctor about a problem involving the penis, urethra, testicles, prostate, bladder, or kidneys is suffering from one of three types of this disease. But prostataitis is not a threat to life, and for all practical purposes research of prostatitis does not exist. If you read the rest of this excerpt from our Special Report on Prostatitis you will know more about it than 98% of the American public!

Prostatitis Also indexed as: Acute Bacterial Prostatitis (ABP), Chronic Abacterial Prostatitis (CAP), Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis (CBP), Chronic Nonbacterial Prostatitis (NBP), Prostadynia (PD) Prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland, is a term that encompasses four disorders of the prostate: acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis, and prostadynia. Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP), also called chronic abacterial prostatitis (CAP), is the most common form of prostatitis. NBP is usually caused by infectious agents such as fungi, mycoplasma, or viruses. Prostadynia (PD), also called chronic pelvic pain syndrome, is a noninfectious form of prostatitis. Although the cause is unknown, it has been proposed that PD may be a neuromuscular condition, causing pain of the pelvic floor muscles. Acute bacterial prostatitis (ABP) occurs from a urinary tract infection (usually from E. coli

To put it simply, prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland. There are three main classifications of prostatitis: Acute bacterial prostatitis acute infection of the prostate gland, usually occurs in men aged 40 to 60 years. Chronic bacterial prostatitis recurrent infection of the prostate, occurs in men aged 50 to 80 years. It is associated with chronic urinary infection and, commonly, calcifications in the prostate (prostatic stones). In the cases of bacterial prostatitis, the culprit usually is a bacteria known as Escherichia coli . The cause of bacterial prostatitis is not welldefined, but one theory suggests a reflux of urine from the bladder into prostatic ducts. This reflux of urine may lead to prostatitis. Nonbacterial prostatitis inflammation without any evidence of infection present, occurs in men aged 30 to 50 years.
