Definition
Restless leg syndrome involves unusual sensations in the legs that cause frequent leg movements.
What is going on in the body?
No one knows exactly why restless leg syndrome occurs. People who suffer from restless leg syndrome have uncontrollable urges to move their legs. A feeling of discomfort in the leg prompts the need for movement. For some people, these sensations may be the result of nerve damage. The sensations may also be caused by decreased blood flow through some vessels in the legs.
These leg movements often occur after a person has gone to bed. This can make sleeping difficult. When the urge to move the leg happens during the day, a person may have to get up and walk around to relieve the discomfort.
What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?
A person with restless leg syndrome experiences unusual sensations that usually occur in the legs but sometimes are present in the arms and trunk. The sensations:
  • are described as burning, itching, crawling, pulling, or tugging but are rarely painful

WHAT IS RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME ("RLS")? This is a disorder that often appears in otherwise healthy people. Although it does affect the legs most often, it can also affect the arms. Symptoms often include an unpleasant "creepy, crawly" sensation that occurs in the legs when sitting or laying still, especially at bedtime. It is not the same sensation you feel when your legs have "fallen asleep" or have a cramp. The discomfort of LS appears most often in the calves and can be temporarily relieved by stretching or moving the legs. HOW COMMON IS "RLS?" Five to 10 of every 100 people have experienced RLS at some time in their lives. While RLS is more common in older individuals, it can occur at any age and in both men and women. RLS has been known to come and go without any obvious cause, but can also sometimes be associated with pregnancy. WHAT CAUSES "RLS?"

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) What is restless legs syndrome (RLS)?
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sleep disorder in which a person experiences unpleasant sensations in the legs, which are described as:
  • creeping crawling tingling pulling painful
These sensations usually occur in the calf area, but may be felt anywhere from the thigh to the ankle. One or both legs may be affected; for some people, the sensations are also felt in the arms. People with RLS have an irresistible urge to move the the affected limb when the sensations occur. Some patients, however, have no definite sensation, except for the need to move. Sleep problems are common with RLS because of the difficulty it causes in getting to sleep. What causes RLS?
The cause of RLS is still unknown. Some cases are believed to be inherited, some cases have been associated with nerve damage in the legs due to diabetes, kidney problems or alcoholism. RLS can also be a side effect of a pinched nerve root in the lower back. What are the symptoms of RLS?

Doctor's Guide
December 21, 1998
ST. PAUL, MN Dec. 21, 1998 People with restless leg syndrome may sleep easier with the help of the generic drug pergolide, according to a study in this months' issue of the journal Neurology
Uncomfortable sensations in the legs make it difficult for patients with restless leg syndrome to fall asleep. Once asleep, leg movements often awaken patients.
"It's disabling when people can't sleep and wake up feeling exhausted every day," said study author and neurologist Christopher Earley, MD, PhD, of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. "Pergolide controls the number of leg movements during sleep and this allows patients and even their bed partners to wake up feeling better rested."
Researchers studied 16 people with moderate to severe restless leg syndrome. Eight patients were given pergolide and the remainder received a placebo. Researchers rated improvement by using a test to measure sleep patterns and leg movements during sleep. In addition, patients rated their overall improvement.
Patients on pergolide reported a 61 percent improvement. The placebo group reported a 19 percent improvement. Pergolide reduced leg movements by approximately 34 percent and this helped improve sleep, Earley explained.

QUESTION: Dear Dr. Heller, What is the restless leg syndrome or nervous leg syndrome? ANSWER: It's an inappropriate leg movement that's usually present at night and interferes with sleep. It is also likely a form of epilepsy (nerve cells firing inappropriately and out of control) that responds to anti-epilepsy medications including Neurontin, Tegretol, Depakote and benzodiazepines like Valium.

I was telling my mom about the fact that I can't get any sleep while Dave is in town (and no, Shawn, that's not why). I explained to her that when I am sleeping in the same bed he's in, he kicks me about a !@#$ing billion times a night, and I wake up from the whole bed shaking all the time. I usually can't get more than five continuous minutes of sleep while he's in town. My mom suggested he go online and look up something called Restless Leg Syndrome, so I made him do it tonight, and this is what he found: The Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation Yes, ladies and gentlemen, there is an actual foundation based on this. Dave has pretty much all the symptoms as well as the side effects of this, and in my opinion, it explains how he could have been diagnosed with ADD, and not really even have ADD. Yay for Dave. He's going to go to the doctor sometime soon and look into treatments and therapies, and hopefully pretty soon both of us will be getting better sleep. Plus, the foundation has a pretty cool logo that we both found amusing:

BUGS ON MY LEGS!
It feels like bugs are crawling on your legs, especially on the calves. Your legs tickle. They itch. You move them, trying to alleviate the sensation. You have the urge to keep moving your legs as you seek relief. Unfortunately, all the restlessness doesn't help. The sensations may vary from person to person, but the results are the same. You get up and you walk the floor, massage your calves or try a few exercises. And all you get is another night without proper rest.

Restless Leg Syndrome
Drug Treatment Available for Patients With Severe Restless Legs Syndrome
Introduction
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disorder, characterised by a pressing need to move the extremities. It is associated with paraesthesias, motor restlessness, and worsening of symptoms at rest and during the evening or at night. The exact cause of the disorder is not known, but RLS is thought to involve the subcortical CNS with involvement of the brainstem and spinal cord, and is classified as idiopathic or symptomatic (secondary). In secondary RLS, the primary illness should be identified and treated if possible. In patients with disease severe enough to warrant drug treatment (see Differential features table), levodopa is the agent of first choice; alternatives include other dopamine agonists, opioids and benzodiazepines. Patients also benefit from general measures, including initiation of good sleep hygiene practices (see guidelines).

I decided to try my CHI machine to treat the pain in the feet. In a matter of weeks, I felt calmness. My energy started to improve. I now can take short walks daily and my thinking is also getting better."

  • To familiarize primary care physicians with diagnostic criteria for restless legs syndrome
  • To elucidate secondary, and often curable, causes of restless legs syndrome
  • To describe current treatment options for restless legs syndrome
This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables Preview : Few conditions are characterized by the difficulty encountered in trying to depict their symptoms, but such is the case in restless legs syndrome. Patients report sensations that are not painful yet are distinctly bothersome and can lead to significant physical and emotional disability. Once correctly diagnosed, restless legs syndrome can usually be effectively treated symptomatically, and in some secondary cases, it can even be cured. In this article, the authors focus on clinical features that enable timely identification of the condition and on current management strategies. I n the mid-1940s, Swedish neurologist Karl A. Ekbom described a disorder characterized by sensory symptoms and motor disturbance of the limbs, mainly during rest. He named the condition restless legs syndrome (1). Although the syndrome affects about 10% to 15% of the US population (2), it is often unrecognized and misdiagnosed. It may begin at any age (1-3), even as early as infancy, but most patients who are severely affected are middle-aged or older. Symptoms progress over time in about two thirds of patients and may be severe enough to be disabling.

Under Construction What is Restless legs Syndrome? Restless Legs Syndrome is a disorder characterized by disagreeable leg sensations, usually prior to sleep onset, that cause an almost irresistable urge to move the legs. What Does Restless Legs Feel Like? RLS sufferes say it feels like:
  • a "crawling" sensation
  • a "creeping" inside the calves
  • aches and pains in the legs
  • an urge to constantly move the legs
What Relieves the Symptoms? The only thing that seems to relieve the discomfort is to move the legs. streching them or getting up and walking around on them. Unfortunately, this interrupts the sleep cycle, so people with RLS are often very tired from lack of sleep. What Can Be Done to Help RLS Sufferers Sleep? First of all, a sleep study (polysomnogram) is done to determine the cause of sleepiness. Once RLS has been diagnosed, mediction can be prescribed to relieve the symptoms. RLS SOURCES Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation is a terrific source of information and referrals. The RLS Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit agency dedicated to supporting as many as 12 million people who suffer from RLS and to educate the medical community that this disorder is physical and treatable.

It is not related to other emotional or psychiatric disorders. The experience of RLS usually involves "creepy" sensations that occur in the legs or arms when sitting still and especially at bedtime. It is very different from the feelings associated with a limb "falling asleep" when the blood supply is lessened. The pain and unpleasant feelings are usually in the calf muscles and can often be temporarily lessened by stretching and moving the legs. What occurs during RLS? The sensations associated with RLS occur primarily when the person is awake and can affect the ability to fall asleep at night. The constant need to move around or stretch the legs can prevent the person from falling asleep. The lack of sleep associated with RLS is a common problem. Restless Legs Syndrome can also affect one's ability to carry out daily activities (such as participating in business meetings). It may interfere with the ability to travel long distances and have other detrimental effects on a person's life.
