What is Scoliosis? And How is it Treated? Everyone's spine has curves. These curves produce the normal rounding of the shoulder and the sway of the lower back. A spine with scoliosis has abnormal curves with a rotational deformity. This means that the spine turns on its axis like a corkscrew. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine which may have its onset in infancy but is most frequently seen in adolescence. It is more common in females by a 2:1 ratio. However, when curves in excess of 30 degrees are evaluated, females are more frequently affected by a ration of approximately 8-10:1. The cause of the most common form of scoliosis idiopathic scoliosis is unknown, but there are certainly hereditary factors that are present. Scoliosis causes shoulder, trunk and waistline asymmetry. In mild forms, the condition may be barely noticed; whereas in severe forms there is significant disfigurement, back pain and postural

From Other Guides Scoliosis In Kids Elsewhere on the Web More Web Sites Surgical Treatments By: Jonathan Cluett, M.D. Last Updated: 07/2002 What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is the most common deformity of the spine. Other common spinal deformities include kyphosis and lordosis, however these deformities are much less common. The diagnosis of scoliosis is made when there are two abnormalities of the spine:
  • Lateral curvature: A lateral curvature of the spine means that the vertebral column bends from side-to-side. If looking at an individual from behind while they bend to touch their toes, one will notice an S-shaped curvature of the spine.
  • Rotation: The rotational deformity is usually subtle, but is always present in a true scoliosis deformity. The rotational aspect of scoliosis causes a twisting deformity of the vertebral bodies.

Main Diseases and Conditions
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine . In most cases, the scoliosis is idiopathic (80% of cases), meaning that it is not known what has caused the curvature to occur. It is not caused by having poor posture or carrying a heavy book bag and in most cases, if detected early, it can be treated and does not cause any permanent problems or disabilities. Related Articles Back to School Survey School Performance Problems ADHD Internet Links About Pediatrics Seven Sleep-Smart Tips for Teens Back to School Center Adolescents are the most common age group to have idiopathic scoliosis, and it usually begins between the ages of 10 and 14. While it occurs about equally in both boys and girls, girls are much more likely to have a progression of the curve that requires treatment. Still, only about 10% of children with scoliosis require corrective treatment (bracing or surgery). The rest (90%) will not require treatment and will have no long lasting effects or symptoms from the curve.

Overview
Scoliosis is defined as a lateral or rotary curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is common in most connective tissue disorders including Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria, Ehlers-Danlos, osteogenesis imperfecta, the MASS phenotype and mitral valve prolapse syndrome. Scoliosis is a feature of rickets, a condition in which bones become soft and decalcified. Scoliosis with no known cause is called "idiopathic" scoliosis. The term "idiopathic" scoliosis may becoming dated, as recent studies show a clear link between scoliosis and lowered bone densities.

Overview
I've known since I was a child that I had scoliosis, but I always thought that it was just a genetic condition where nothing could be done about it except bracing or surgery. Around age 40 I was really in a lot of pain, so I started reading everything I could about scoliosis and looked everywhere for books with scoliosis exercises. I saw all types of doctors, chiropractors and alternative health practitioners who I thought might be able to help me. It worked. I had to see a lot of people and waste a lot of money on treatments that didn't help and some that made me worse, but in the end I did find people and books that helped my scoliosis a lot. The books on scoliosis and exercises were hard to find, but they do exist. Now my days are generally pain free and most of my spinal curve is gone. The list below contains information on the books and techniques I found helpful.

Scoloiosis May Result in Back Pain
Q:
I have scoliosis of the spine with a curvature of more than 35 degrees. I had no problems as a young girl. Over the last 7 to 8 years, my posture has become more exaggerated and I’ve had increasing pain. I’ve been to several orthopedists, a chiropractor and a pain management center. My bone density is normal and I’m otherwise quite healthy. Do you have any suggestions for a youthful appearing senior citizen in otherwise good health with a lot of back and leg pain?
A: Scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, is a condition most commonly discovered in young women, that if uncorrected by the onset of menstruation, can result in a permanent deformity. Your experience would suggest that while you were symptom free, your spine was developing arthritis that is now most likely the source of your pain, either from local irritation, nerve root compression, muscle spasm or a combination. You mentioned that you had seen a number of orthopedists with no real answers. Did these physicians specialize in diseases of the spine? Another option is an evaluation by a neurosurgeon with a similar area of expertise. I would suggest that you contact the medical staff office of your local hospital or call the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery or Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin asking for an appointment with their physicians who specialize in diseases of the spine.

  • HISTORY: J.G. is a ten year old female who presented to the Institute with a spinal curvature noted in a routine camp physical. She had no neurologic complaints. Her birth, medical, and developmental history were all unremarkable. Her father has a vague history of spinal curvature. PHYSICAL EXAM: Physical examination was significant for a moderate left thoracic rib prominence as well as absent abdominal reflexes in the upper and lower quadrants on the left side. XRAYS: A 24 degree left thoracic curve from T5 - Tl1 was noted on scoliosis spine films. With the asymmetric abdominal reflexes and high thoracic left curve she was sent for an MRI scan. This revealed a large syringomyelia with dilatation in the lower cervical and upper thoracic area. Also noted was an Arnold-Chiari malformation. TREATMENT: She was referred to a neurosurgeon who performed a posterior fossa decompression. She tolerated this well.

Scoliosis What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is a sideways curving of the spine that can often result in an 'S' shape or 'C' shape in the spine. If someone runs there fingers down the spine either side of the vertibrae they will leave two red lines. It is often easier to see the curving of the spine in these red lines.Scoliosis is often a result of an imbalance in the muscles caused by one sided activities such as throwing or racket sports. Children can develope it through carrying heavey bags on one shoulder all day at school.
Reaching up on the tight side and down on the weak side.
How can you prevent scoliosis in young people?
  • Avoid carrying heavy bags on one shoulder. Get a rucksack type bag and wear it properly or regularly alternate carrying arms and shoulders. If you are a one sided sports person e.g. Javelin thrower, hurdler or tennis player, at the end of each practice make sure you throw a few times with your wrong arm or hit a few balls with the other arm. Get into the habbit - it will be worth it in the long run.
What can the athlete do about it?

Scoliosis
VOL 101 / NO 6 / JUNE 1997 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE You can't prevent it. All you can do is watch for it. It often runs in families. Girls are four times more likely than boys to have it, and it is much more likely to progress and require treatment in girls. What is this mystery problem?
Scoliosis is curvature of the spine to the side, with twisting (something like a corkscrew). The ribs on the side toward the curve become pushed together, and on the other side they're spread apart. Mild scoliosis is barely noticeable. But when it becomes severe, it can cause back pain, fatigue, nerve problems, disfigurement, and heart and lung problems if these organs are crowded into too little space. How is scoliosis diagnosed?
Scoliosis usually appears in late childhood or the early teens. It can progress rapidly during the growth spurt, so about half of US states require screening beginning in fifth or sixth grade. Curvature of the vertebrae may be visible. One shoulder blade is often more prominent than the other. One shoulder or hip may be higher. The body may tilt to one side. When the person leans forward, the ribs may form a hump. How is scoliosis treated?

SCOLIOSIS PATIENTS
This website has been written specifically for Adults with Curved Spines who were diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis (or Scoliosis due to unknown causes) at some point in their lives. A full 80% of people with Scoliosis suffer from the Idiopathic variety, which usually manifests itself in adolescence. The information contained here may be helpful for Adults with Scoliosis from the 50 or so other known causes such as neuromuscular disease or cerebral palsy, but the reader must be aware that it is not the purpose of this resource to discuss these diseases and/or any specific problems associated with them. Adults with Scoliosis who were diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis fall into three general categories with often very different sets of problems: Adult Scoliosis Patients Surgically-Treated as Adolescents who have become adults after having had spinal fusions to correct severe side-to-side spinal curvatures caused by Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) as children or teenagers, Adult Scoliosis Patients Not Treated Until Adulthood who either did not think their curvatures were serious enough to contemplate surgery as adolescents, or, while probably suffering some scoliosis deformity as adolescents, were not aware of their curvatures until they worsened in adulthood, and
