To browse visit Here *this is a long story, but if you keep reading, it will get interresting, I promise* My life started on December 2, 1984. I have 5 sisters. Two are step sisters, two are half sisters (same dad as me, different mom). And the last one is my real sister. All of the others are so much older than me that some of their children are actually older than I am. My one real sister is 2 years older than I am, her name is Cara. As kids, we were always the best of friends. Nothing in our lives was out of the ordinary. When I was two years old, my parents got married, I never knew why they waited until they had kids to get married, but oh well. My dad was a pretty cool guy. When I was 2 years old, he was 62. Needless to say, wisdom comes with age and, according to me, my dad knew everything. I was a very defiant little shit when I was a kid, but I guess it wasn't too much out of the ordinary. I found that whenever my sister got in trouble, I did too, and vice versa. Me and Cara were a handfull, that's for sure. And I learned one thing from my daily rutine, my dad had a very quick temper.

SELF INJURY
Most of us act at some time in a way that is harmful to our body whether it be by drinking, smoking or other excesses. This leaflet is about the need to inflict injury on oneself in a more deliberate way such as cutting, burning, stabbing, scratching, hair pulling and bruising. Such action is rarely an attempt at suicide or an expression of madness; however, it is a sign there are problems that need addressing.
What makes someone want to hurt themselves?
The origins of self-harm often lie in a deep feeling of being powerless, trapped, or without choice. This may come from unhappy experiences in the past or a traumatic event such as being attacked. Current events can reinforce old feelings of distress, particularly when life is very stressful, or a person feels isolated, lacking support or understanding, or is under constant criticism. Resorting to self injury is a way of both indicating that difficulties exist and is also an attempt to cope with the problems. Although harming oneself is not a constructive way of dealing with these difficulties, it may serve some of the following functions:
  • to tell people something is wrong
  • to legitimise feelings of pain
  • to gain a sense of control
  • to distract and bring a sense of relief
  • to manage unacceptable feelings such as anger
  • to punish oneself
  • to protest
  • to express shame and self hatred
  • to overcome numbness and restore a capacity to feel
  • to cleanse.

But I've read them all (strong personal interest) and this is really THE book. Strong really knows her stuff, both the "inside the heads" view of self-injurers and even making sense of how the brain seems to work that helps to explain self-injury. The experiences of people she writes about are so real, and so vivid. And caring! Maybe its because Strong is not a therapist and therefore doesn't have any "blinders" on the way therapists unfortunately often do. Sometimes even when therapists treat people with self-injury (and even write about it), they really don't seem to have a deep level of empathy. Strong touched my soul with her book)!"

Self-Injury: A Search For Understanding
A friend confides in you that she deliberately cuts herself with a razor blade. What would your reaction be? Self-injury is little understood by most people. The idea of deliberately hurting yourself is seemingly incomprehensible, but for many of those who do exactly this, it is a survival tool, a coping mechanism that enables them to sustain their life through emotionally difficult times. For most of us, cutting or burning our own skin would be incredibly painful and almost impossible to carry out. For cutters, it is a strangely effective coping method for dealing with inner pain so overwhelming it must be brought to the surface (Strong 1998). What is Self-Injury? Definition
Self-Injury, also commonly known as self-harm; self-mutilation; self-abuse; and self inflicted violence, is defined as the deliberate harming or alteration of one's body tissue without the conscious intent to commit suicide. Integral to this definition are several key concepts. First, self-injury is an act done to the self. Second, it is done by the self. Third, it must include some type of physical violence. Fourth, self-injury is not undertaken with the intent to kill oneself. And fifth, it is an intentional act. Types of Self-Injury
Favazza (1996) separates self-mutilation into two major groups. The first being culturally sanctioned self-mutilation, which is subdivided into rituals and practices, and the second deviant self-mutilation, which is subdivided into major self-mutilation, stereotypical self-mutilation, and superficial or moderate self-mutilation. It is the second group, deviant self-mutilation, and more specifically the subdivision of superficial or moderate self-mutilation, that is the subject of this research.

Bipolar Disorder News WebSite News Diagnosis ... Contact Us Self Injury (SI)...many are ashamed to talk about it, most feel guilt if they are doing it, several wonder about it, others can not begin to understand why or how someone would/could do this to themselves. Often this is called the "silent epidemic" as the person with SI tries to hide the injuries inflicted upon themselves. More than 1 percent of the population are said to be self injurers. The largest group are females between the ages of 15 and 25, however, 1 in every 3 self injurers are men. Countless people who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder are also self injurers. One important thing to understand about self injury, is that the person is usually NOT trying to commit suicide. Another is that the person does not need to be admonished or scorned...they get enough of this from themselves. They do need understanding and support from family, friends psychiatrists, and fellow SI sufferers. The best way to offer support is to read as much as you can about the topic. It is for this reason that we wanted to create a special links page. Listed below you will find ample web links and numerous books listed.
