Speech is the spoken medium of language. The other two "mediums" or "forms" of language are writing and gestures. Gestures range from simple iconic movements, like pretending to drink, through to complex finger-spelling and sign systems. What is phonology? Phonology is a branch of linguistics. It is concerned with the study of the sound systems of languages. The aims of phonology are to demonstrate the patterns of distinctive sound contrasts in a language, and to explain the ways speech sounds are organised and represented in the mind. The term "phonology" is used clinically as a referent to an individual’s speech sound system - for example, "her phonology" might refer to "her phonological system", or "her phonological development".

DEFINITION OF SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS
Speech and language disorders refer to problems in communication and related areas such as oral motor function. These delays and disorders range from simple sound substitutions to the inability to understand or use language or use the oral-motor mechanism for functional speech and feeding. Some causes of speech and language disorders include hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury, mental retardation, drug abuse, physical impairments such as cleft lip or palate, and vocal abuse or misuse. Frequently, however, the cause is unknown.

INCIDENCE Back to the Table of Contents CHARACTERISTICS A child's communication is considered delayed when the child is noticeably behind his or her peers in the acquisition of speech and/or language skills. Sometimes a child will have greater receptive (understanding) than expressive (speaking) language skills, but this is not always the case.

Understanding Speech Disorders
Information and approaches to help children communicate The term communication (speech) disorders encompasses a wide variety of problems in language, speech, and hearing. Speech and language impairments include articulation problems, voice disorders, fluency problems (such as stuttering), aphasia (difficulty using words, usually as a result of a brain injury), and delays in speech and/or language development. Speech and language delays may be due to many factors, including environmental factors or hearing loss. Hearing impairments include partial hearing and deafness. Deafness may be defined as a loss sufficient to make auditory communication difficult or impossible without amplification. There are four types of hearing loss. Conductive hearing losses result from diseases or obstructions in the outer or middle ear and are usually helped with a hearing aid. Sensorineural losses arise from damage to the sensory hair cells of the inner ear or the nerves that supply it and may not respond to a hearing aid. Mixed hearing losses are those in which the problem occurs both in the outer or middle ear and in the inner ear. A central hearing loss results from damage to the nerves or brain. Many communication disorders result from other conditions such as learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, a cleft lip or cleft palate.

Dysfluencies are rhythm disorders that are usually characterized by the repetition of a sound, word, or phrase. Stuttering is, perhaps, the most serious dysfluency.
Articulation deficiencies are sound that are made incorrectly or inappropriately.
Voice disorders involve differences in the quality, pitch, and loudness of the sound.

by Joe Spataro Self esteem is the most important aspect of our children's lives. If you believe that you can do it, then you probably can. Unfortunately, many kids are told quite the opposite, especially if they don't quite "fit in." Kids with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, victims of bullies and many others get constant messages, that they are not worthy. Many of these messages come from teachers, parents and others who are supposed to be helping them. Quickly, they will believe it and it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. We have some great FREE inspirational video clips that can help you help your child from Dr. Robert Brooks who talks about "Islands of Competence" and the need to celebrate and reinforce of them. Richard Lavoi then has another video clip about making sure that your child gets enough poker chips for the game of life. Meet the Authors Mariaemma Willis, M.S.

I just investigated the web page of Stuttering Foundation of America where I found some facts about stuttering:
    • Over three million Americans stutter. Stuttering affects four times as many males as females. People who stutter are as intelligent and well-adjusted as non-stutterers. There are no instant miracle cures for stuttering. Some 25 percent of all children go through a state of development during which they encounter disfluencies sever enough to concern their parents. People who stutter are self-conscious about their stuttering and often let the disability determine the vocation they choose. Stuttering becomes an increasingly formidable problem in the teen years as dating and social interaction begin.

by John E. Riski, Ph.D. Speech Pathologists and Resonance Disorders Hypernasality: a voice or resonance disorder? Hypernasality is often mislabeled as a voice disorder. In fact, it is a resonance disorder! Voice disorders are caused by dysfunction of the larynx. Hypernasality is caused by a dysfunction of the velopharyngeal mechanism. Medical management for voice disorders is by otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat specialists) and surgical management for hypernasality is by a plastic surgeon or craniofacial surgeon who participates on a cleft palate-craniofacial team.
    • Velopharyngeal incompetence or VPI is the inability of the velum (soft palate) and related musculature to close the nasopharynx, separating the oral and nasal cavities for the production of oral consonants. A VPI can be caused by a deficiency of the velum or an increased size of the pharynx. The latter is difficult to diagnose without imaging.

    • Establish correct articulatory placements.
    • Maximize oral-pharyngeal articulatory function.
What are therapy techniques for treating hypernasality?
    • Small degrees of hypernasality can sometimes be managed by increasing articulatory effort.
