21. What Is Tourette Syndrome
tourette syndrome is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by repeatedand involuntary body movements (tics) and uncontrollable vocal sounds.
http://www.tsa-usa.org/what_is/whatists.html
Tourette Syndrome is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by repeated and involuntary body movements (tics) and uncontrollable vocal sounds. In a minority of cases, the vocalizations can include socially inappropriate words and phrases called coprolalia. These outbursts are neither intentional nor purposeful. Involuntary symptoms can include eye blinking, repeated throat clearing or sniffing, arm thrusting, kicking movements, shoulder shrugging or jumping.
These and other symptoms typically appear before the age of 18 and the condition occurs in all ethnic groups with males affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. Although the symptoms of TS vary from person to person and range from very mild to severe, the majority of cases fall into the mild category. Associated conditions can include attentional problems, impulsiveness and learning disabilities.
Most people with TS lead productive lives and participate in all professions. Increased public understanding and tolerance of TS symptoms are of paramount importance to people with Tourette Syndrome. The disorder was named for a French neuropsychiatrist who successfully assessed the disorder in the late 1800s: Georges Gilles de la Tourette Georges Gilles de la Tourette (born Georges Albert Edouard Brutus Gilles de la Tourette!) in 1857, made several valuable contributions to medicine and literature. His greatest achievements were in the study of hysteria and hypnotism; a competent neuropsychiatrist, he was particularly interested in therapy. With a colleague, he wrote a highly perceptive analysis of Sister Jeanne des Anges' account of her "hysterical illness" which was caused by her unrequited love for a priest.

http://www.wemove.org/ts.html
Tourette syndrome (TS) is an inherited neurobehavioral disorder characterized by sudden, involuntary, repetitive muscle movements (motor tics) and vocalizations (vocal tics). The disorder is also known as Gilles de la Tourette syndrome for the neurologist who first described the syndrome in 1885. The nature and complexity of the tics are usually variable over time with natural waxing and waning in frequency and severity. Many individuals with TS also develop associated behavioral problems, such as obsessions and compulsions, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Symptom onset typically occurs during childhood or early adolescence. Symptoms/Findings:
The primary characteristics associated with TS are multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics. Motor and vocal tics may develop at about the same time or predominate at different times during the course of the disorder. Motor tics
Vocal tics

Vocal tics are sudden, involuntary, recurrent, often relatively loud vocalizations. Vocal tics usually begin as single, simple sounds that may eventually progress to involve more complex phrases and vocalizations. For example, patients may initially develop simple vocal tics, including grunting, throat clearing, sighing, barking, hissing, sniffing, tongue clicking, or snorting. Complex vocal tics may involve repeating certain phrases or words out of context, one's own words or sounds (palilalia), or the last words or phrases spoken by others (echolalia). Rarely, there may be involuntary, explosive cursing or compulsive utterance of obscene words or phrases (coprolalia).

elcome to Tourette Syndrome On-line (TSO) the internet home for information, support, advice and resources for Tourette's victims, their families and loved ones, counselors, teachers and medical professionals. This site was first posted in February 1998 with the goal to become the "ultimate" cyberspace library for books, literature and information on Tourette Syndrome and other disorders (i.e., ADHD, ADD and OCD) that often are associated with Tourette's. What is Tourette Syndrome?
T
ourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder that stikes roughly 1 in 1000 children, usually between the ages of 6 and 9, but can occur as late as 21 years of age. It is more common in boys than it is in girls, and manifests itself in the form of facial and/or body "tics." Verbal tics are much less common in occurrence, but because of the disturbance and disruption verbal tics often cause in public, they are the most common symptom the unknowing public associates with the disease.
Research and What Causes Tourette Syndrome
R
esearch on Tourette Syndrome is ongoing but is still considered a relatively new field. A growing number of experts believe that an abnormal metabolism of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin are likely associated with the disorder. It is genetically transmitted; parents having a 50% chance of passing the gene on to their children. Girls with the gene have a 70% chance of displaying symptoms, boys with the gene have a 99% chance of displaying symptoms.

TOURETTE SYNDROME: Myths and Facts
Summer 1995 By Roger D. Freeman, MD
Chair, TSFC Professional Advisory board
Ten years ago most professionals had never heard of TS, or if they had, they would likely have said that they had never actually seen a case. To them this was not surprising, since TS was reputed to be rare. This was IGNORANCE, and we combated it with great success. Now we have another problem as a result of that success: CONFUSION. This affects all of us, professionals, parents and the general public. At this still rather primitive stage of our knowlege, controversy is to be expected. Although we sometimes forget to do so, what is controversial should be labelled as such. I have included here a few of the areas that need clarification.
FACT: TS is a Fuzzy Concept
For scientific and research purposes we need criteria or definitions, but these do not necessarily coincide with what persons with TS feel they "have." And since we do not know the precise mechanism of TS, or have a test for it, this leaves lots of opportunities for confusion.
Here are some problems:
  • Although tics are typically described as "rapid," and "purposeless," some are not.

    What is Tourette syndrome?
Tourette syndrome (TS) is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by multiple involuntary movements and uncontrollable vocalizations called tics that come and go over years. In a few cases, such tics can include inappropriate words and phrases. The disorder is named for Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette, the pioneering French neurologist who first described an 86-year-old French noblewoman with the condition in 1885. The symptoms of TS generally appear before the individual is 18 years old. TS can affect people of all ethnic groups; males are affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. It is estimated that 100,000 Americans have full-blown TS, and that perhaps as many as 1 in 200 show a partial expression of the disorder, such as chronic multiple tics or transient childhood tics.

    The Organization
The Tourette Syndrome Camp Organization (TSCO) is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt non-profit organization dedicated to promoting camping opportunities for children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and its associated disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD).
    The Program
The Illinois Tourette Syndrome Camp, founded in 1994, is a residential camping program designed for girls and boys ages 8 - 16+ whose primary diagnosis is TS, and to a lesser degree, OCD and ADD/ADHD.
The goal of the camp is to allow children with TS an opportunity to meet other children, share similar experiences and coping mechanisms in a fun, safe and positive environment.
The TS camp is run concurrently with a traditional camp week. While there are separate cabins for the TS campers, all programming is done with the rest of the camp. However, we do hold rap sessions with the TS campers so they have an opportunity to share their experiences with each other.
There is a nurse to handle medication and medical issues for the TS campers.

    tourette syndrome
    Main Diseases and Conditions
    Tourette Syndrome
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, Tourette syndrome, occurs in about 1 of every 2000 children. It is more likely to occur in boys, especially if they have a first degree relative that also has this disorder, and usually begins between the ages of 2 and 21 years of age. Tics are sudden, repetitive, purposeless motor or vocal expressions or movements. In addition to transient tic disorders and chronic motor tic disorders, Tourette syndrome is a common cause of tics in children. The symptoms of Tourette syndrome include having multiple vocal tics and motor tics , although they don't have to have both types of tics at the same time.
