humanism the humanist tradition ethical briefings ... the humanist tradition 20th and 21st century 20th and 21st century humanists The Twentieth Century - A Scientific And Secular Age Society
The twentieth century saw a revulsion against war, partly because of the horrors of the first and second World Wars, and partly because the mass media make us aware of atrocities and suffering all over the world. Both world wars, and especially the Nazi genocide against the Jews, made many question their faith in a loving god. We still have wars and the threats of war, but the United Nations exists to encourage negotiation and resolution of conflict by other means, and to police international law on the conduct of war and on human rights. Generally, there has been greater awareness and spread of human rights and democracy in the twentieth century Humanist organisations exist worldwide, varying their concerns and activities according to the situation in their country.

TThere are relatively few people who call themselves Humanists, largely due to the fact that not many people even know what Humanism is. The 2001 census shows that 1.4 million Scots (27.5%) have no religion - many of these are probably humanists, and don't know it. However, many eminent and respected people have aligned themselves publicly with the causes and values of Humanism.

http://www.ldolphin.org/Solar.html
The Origin of the Solar System by Lambert Dolphin Scientific textbooks are clearly written, lavishly illustrated, and they carry the full weight of the authors' beliefs and experience. Every generation of eager young students all too eagerly accepts the current scientific theories as gospel truth, not realizing that the text books of a previous generation proclaimed-with the same authority-models of the real world that have now been discarded. Such is the nature of "scientific progress!" "Science is the only self-correcting human institution, but it is also a process that progresses only by showing itself to be wrong." -Astronomer Allan Sandage. Theories for the origin of our solar system have come and gone, yet even today no satisfactory model exists that both explains all the facts and is consistent with the known laws of physics. As science in the western world began to abandon a Judeo-Christian view of creation, beginning about 200 years ago, the trend towards purely naturalistic explanations emerged. Today these views, known as "scientism" constitute the majority state-religion in our public school systems-if God exists at all He is uninvolved and irrelevant to a full understanding of the world we live in. (Ref. 1). German philosopher Immanuel Kant in 1755 hypothesized the origin of the solar system as beginning with a rotating gaseous nebula out of which condensed globular bodies that became the sun and planets-all revolving in the same direction. (Ref. 2). Essentially the same theory, now called "the nebular hypothesis" was proposed by the French mathematician Laplace in 1796. According to this model the hot rotating gas cloud began to cool and contract, and if this were to happen the law of conservation of angular momentum requires a more rapid rate of rotation. This speed up was supposed to have flung off rings which condensed into the planets.

Evolutionary Claim:
Billions of years ago, gravity condensed the debris of exploded stars into a swirling nebula. Over many millions of years, the nebula condensed into a new star, our Sun, and an accretion disc. Over many more millions of years, gravity condensed the accretion disc first into proto-planets, then into planets, planetoids, and moons.

SIAM News Quick Search: The 1828 essay that introduced Green's functions and Green's theorem was most likely written at least in part in the now famous windmill, shown here after its restoration, which was completed in 1993, the bicentenary of George Green's birth.
Scientific Justice for George Green
Robert E. O'Malley, Jr.
Mary Cannell had lots to teach us about George Green, weaving her fascinating tale on a limited warp of specific facts about Green but with a thorough understanding of Victorian life in Nottingham and Cambridge as her very solid weft. Indeed, Cannell, who died earlier this year, confessed that she'd had a "mystic marriage" with GG (1793-1841) for her last twenty years. Her 1993 Athlone Press biography of Green was recommended to me by Lady Bertha Jeffreys, who was the collaborator and wife of the late Sir Harold Jeffreys (the "J" of the WKBJ method, which the authority Frank Olver convincingly argues should more appropriately be named after Liouville and Green). Most applied mathematicians know of Green's theorem and Green's functions and use his term "potential" without attribution, but have no knowledge of Green and his important essay of 1828. Although Boyce and DiPrima's book on differential equations includes a short biography of Green, the Green's functions books of Bergman and Schiffer, Roach, and Stakgold, for example, include no details about him. History of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography Specialist Group
Click here for a shortened version of the Group's 1/2001 newsletter. The History Group was formed in 1983 and now has 90 members. Anyone interested in the history of meteorology and /or physical oceanography, amateur or professional, is very welcome to join. It is a very active group, run by a committee of 12, including a representative of the Challenger Society for Marine Science (Dr Margaret Deacon). Three meetings are held each year - the AGM in March, a summer meeting/visit, and an autumn one in October. Usually, these are held on Wednesdays or Saturdays, at appropriate venues for the meeting theme, and the Group has occasionally joined in organizing Society meetings. For the Group's summer meeting, a visit is made to a place of interest not only to the Group's members but also to their spouses. Recent venues include Kew Gardens (with meteorological observations in the London area the theme), the Museum of Army Aviation, Middle Wallop, and the RAF Museum, Hendon, for meteorology in the services, and the Old Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Some Group meetings are held jointly with other organizations. In 2000, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Society in nearly its present form was commemorated at the Royal Society, with the cooperation of the Royal Astronomical Society and others. The Group is currently encouraging joint meetings with other specialist Groups of the Society.

It's easy to look at a key and say "yeah, that's what I would have answered" and you can fool yourself that way. Key to this test. Note : From semester-to-semester the material covered before the first test might not be exactly the same. Therefore, there may be sample test questions on material not covered this semester, and conversely there may not be sample test questions on material covered this semester.

When lava flows out of a volcano and hardens, the result is often a black rock known as basalt. Basalt is slightly magnetic, and as it solidifies and cools, it becomes magnetized in the direction of the prevailing magnetic field. The process is somewhat similar to the capture of the prevailing magnetic field by a cooling bar of steel, noted by Gilbert ( Figure 3 Volcanoes are often active for long periods, and by comparing the magnetization of their lava flows from different times (especially if such flows can be dated by some method) one can learn about changes in the direction of the local magnetic field. Bernard Brunhes (1867-1910) found ancient lava flows in France whose magnetization appeared to be reversed

    Prodding the Planet
Sir Harold Jeffreys, noted British astronomer and geophysicist, was born on this day in 1891. Jeffreys investigated the thermal history of Earth and was the first to propose that Earth's core is liquid. He also co-authored the standard tables of travel times for earthquake waves published in 1940, explained how monsoons and sea breezes arise, and recognized the importance of cyclones in the general circulation of the atmosphere. Jeffreys devised models of the internal structure of the four large outer planetsJupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptuneand determined that they were very cold. He was knighted in 1953 and died in 1989.
