    Extractions: This is very similar to autism , in that there are similar problems around getting on with other people, and behaviours are shown that seem obsessive or repetitive. However, where it is mainly different is that the childs' speech and intelligence develop normally. People with Asperger's syndrome may go on to develop a psychosis in their early adult life. Asperger's is less common than autism. Boys are 6 to 8 times more likely to develop childhood autism than girls. Nobody is really 100% sure. Although some research seems to suggest that it is a brain problem (how it is wired), which is linked to genetic factors (i.e. you might inherit it from your parents even if they have never suffered from it). There are also other theories which suggest it is more to do with how the child has been brought up during its early days and months. Other theories suggest that both factors play a role, but the bottom line is that despite quite a lot of effort being put into finding out what is going on, we still don't really know. Autism is on the increase in Northern Ireland, and asperger’s syndrome is no different. Undoubtedly, asperger’s syndrome is only recently being diagnosed as distinct condition in its own right. We have come a long way in recognising this type of autism, yet there is still a long way to go.
