The truth is that usually lymphedema happens in only 5–10% of cases. The risk of lymphedema can approach the 25% level if you have the following combination of aggressive therapies: chemotherapy. The 25% risk level for lymphedema also applies to women who had an old-fashioned radical mastectomy (removal of nearly all of the lymph nodes surrounding the breast, in addition to removal of the breast and underlying muscles). Sometimes it starts at once and lasts for life; sometimes it occurs for a few weeks, goes away and may or may not return; sometimes it appears years after the event. Once the lymphatics are damaged, a very trivial thing may set it off, (e.g. a bee sting, sunburn, carrying heavy weights, or a long aircraft flight.)Apart from that which occurs briefly after the blockage and then goes away, once lymphedema starts it gets worse and worse. This worsening is usually slow in primary lymphedmas and rapid in secondary ones. It is usually a steady increase unless some inflammation occurs (e.g. infection), when it gets worse very quickly. Grades of Lymphedema Grade 1 swelling will pit if the skin is pressed and is reduced if the limb is elevated.

It's a battle to keep her arm from ballooning a legacy of breast cancer called lymphedema. Many patients aren't warned to expect such a complication and they struggle to find good care when the symptom strikes. The very therapy vital to fighting breast cancer leaves 15-20 percent of patients with this side effect, a swelling of the arm on the side where the breast tumor struck. That means a staggering 300,000 breast cancer survivors may cope every day with some degree of lymphedema. For some, it's a mild swelling that merely annoys when rings or clothing don't fit. Others can be disabled as their arm painfully balloons to twice its normal size and leaves them prone to infections. Yet many doctors dismiss women's complaints as a small price for surviving cancer, leaving patients to sort through a bewildering array of touted therapies. Some help, some don't, and others could be harmful.

Three parasites are responsible for lymphatic filariasis: Wuchereria bancrofti, Brungia malayi and Brugia timori. There are two schools of thought over how these parasites cause lymphedema: some experts believe that the parasites block the lymphatic system as the larvae becomes an adult worm while others believe that it is the body's inflammatory response to the parasites - or bacterial riding on top of the parasites - which ultimately causes lymphedema. Extractions: Lymphedema is a common but often misunderstood condition that may be congenital (primary lymphedema) but may also result from compromise to lymph nodes under the arm and around the breast caused by breast cancer surgeries or diagnostic dissection, mastectomy, or radiation (secondary lymphedema). Lymphedema is caused when protein rich lymphatic fluid accumulates in tissues engorging and enlarging vessels often causing visible swelling, tenderness, and sometimes pain. Left untreated, the affected tissues may continue to swell, become hardened or fibrotic and are susceptible to infection. Awareness of lymphedema is low considering the number of women who suffer from it. Currently, there are over 1.5 million women in the United States alone that have breast cancer. Given estimates of lymphedema incidence in breast cancer patients, this would translate into about half a million women who suffer various states of the condition. A Complex System The lymphatic system is a complex network of lymph nodes and vessels that carry and remove lymph fluids throughout the body. Lymph nodes serve to filter bacteria and foreign matter before it is returned to the bloodstream, which is why nodes are sometimes called the "garbage collectors" of the body. When lymph nodes are damaged, as they are frequently during breast cancer treatment, there can be an increase in fluid causing swelling and an increase in protein creating higher risk of infection.
