It's called a monoclonal antibody, a chemical agent that seeks out and destroys cancer cells the way a guided missile seeks out and destroys its target. Among those attesting to its efficacy in treating the immune-system cancer was a doctor who sent her endorsement in a letter to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel meeting in Washington. "As far as she is concerned, it's sort of a miracle of modern science," says Kathryn Adams of the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation. "She feels this drug is her only hope and is a great hope, as she said in her statement, for a long and happy life." CNN's Jeff Levine reports. The panel also heard about a study of 160 patients with non-Hodgkins lymphoma for whom other treatments had failed.

Treatment Options Lymphoma is a general term for cancers of the lymphatic system - an important part of the body’s immune system that fights disease and infection. About five percent of all cancers in the United States are lymphomas. There are two types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s disease is one of these two types. All other types of lymphomas are considered non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), and will be discussed here. According to the National Cancer Institute, since 1973 the incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the United States has increased about seventy-five percent—one of the largest increases among major cancer sites. Part of the increase in NHL incidence in recent years is a result of the AIDS epidemic: NHL is sixty times more common among AIDS patients than in the general U.S. population. Herbicides and insecticides have been linked to risk for NHL in studies of farmers, pesticide applicators, and other occupational groups exposed to high levels of these chemicals. An NCI study found that contamination of drinking water with nitrate, a chemical found in fertilizers, may also be associated with an increased risk of NHL, particularly in agricultural areas.

Most recently an Internet security consultant with Sun Microsystems, Ellis was one of the creators of Usenet, which linked computers and allowed people to share information and reply to messages. Usenet began in 1979 when Ellis and another Duke graduate student, Tom Truscott, thought of hooking together computers to share information. Usenet quickly became a popular means of trading and sharing information internationally before the World Wide Web came into existence.     Extractions: This drug causes additive bone marrow depression in combination with other cancer treatments and radiation. It should not be given if you are pregnant or breast feeding. If there is liver impairment, dosage must be reduced, and if you have had previous radiation, your skin may be aggravated at the site. Hair loss is possible. The drug can make your urine appear red for 1-2 days. Risk of mouth inflammation is greatest 5-10 days after treatment and usually lasts 3-7 days. Dosage Notify your doctor promptly if you have fever, sore throat, signs of infection, bleeding gums, bruising, blood in stools or urine, and increased fatigue. Avoid crowds and persons with known infections. Use a soft toothbrush and electric razor and avoid falls. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or take drugs containing aspirin because these can cause gastric bleeding. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating and drinking. Practice contraception during treatment and for at least 4 months after therapy is concluded. Notify your doctor immediately if you have irregular heart beat, shortness of breath, or swelling of legs. Tell your doctor if you get a skin irritation at the site of previous radiation therapy. Do not receive any vaccinations without discussing with your doctor.

In using sargramostim to treat people with HIV infection, there is concern that sargramostim may help spread HIV further throughout the body. Sargramostim stimulates macrophages, a crucial part of the immune system, and macrophages may be infected with HIV. Dosage Sargramostim treatment for individuals who have had bone marrow transplants is for 14 days and then discontinued for 7 days. If after this 7 day period, the graft has still not taken, a second 14 day course of treatment may be given. Dose may be increased for a third course of treatment, but if no improvement is seen after the third course of sargramostim therapy, alternative treatment will be necessary. Managing side effects If malignancy progression is observed during treatment, the drug should be discontinued. If severe adverse reaction occurs, dosage of the drug should be reduced or temporarily discontinued. This information is specific to the use of this medication for HIV-related conditions. AIDS-related lymphoma is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the lymph system in patients who have AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
