This led scientists to test beta interferon, a substance which inhibits certain white blood cells, to treat the disease. Studies showed beta interferon can reduce the number and severity of multiple sclerosis attacks and brain abnormalities in patients. It was recently approved for widespread use by patients with one form of MS. For decades, doctors could do little to treat multiple sclerosis, a disabling neurological disease of the brain and spinal cord affecting 300,000 Americans. Therapies could ease some symptoms, such as muscle spasms and fatigue, but could not change the course of the disease.
