Extractions: Language Disorders course supervisor: Prof. Harald Clahsen, room 3.310, tel.: 87-2228 OVERALL STRUCTURE The module consists of ten weekly two-hour lectures, and provides an up-to-date introduction to acquired and developmental language disorders focussing on impairments of grammar (= syntax and morphology). We will interpret empirical findings on language disorders from a linguistic perspective, with respect to the autonomy and the internal modularity of grammar as well as with respect to linguistic approaches of the acquisition of grammar. After a brief overview of the basic brain structures involved in language, we will present an overview of studies on Aphasia , an acquired disorder of language that occurs in adults as a result of a brain lesion. In the second part of this module, we will investigate developmental language disorders, focussing on Specific Language Impairment , a genetic disorder that occurs in children and impedes their acquisition of grammar. Finally, we will look at recent linguistic studies of Williams Syndrome AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The module has four major aims: (i) to provide an overview of empirical findings on the most important brain-related and genetically-related language impairments, (ii) to enable students to understand and assess current scientific debates in this research area, (iii) to help students evaluate the relevance of language disorders for linguistic theories and theories of the acquisition of language, and (iv) to prepare students for doing their own empirical research on language disorders.

Extractions: A. Preservatives are compounds that kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria or fungi. They are used in vaccines to prevent bacterial or fungal growth in the event that the vaccine is accidentally contaminated, as might occur with repeated puncture of multi-dose vials. Vaccines, both in the United States and throughout other parts of the world, are commonly packaged in multi-dose vials. In some cases, preservatives are added during manufacture to prevent microbial growth; with changes in manufacturing technology, however, the need to add preservatives during the manufacturing process has decreased markedly.

Research Proposals Sought for research projects to evaluate the potential role of vaccines and vaccineproducts in the etiology of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. http://matrix.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/vol7_no5_sep00/html/autism1.html
Extractions: Autism appears to be on the rise - and so is concern that common childhood vaccines may be a culprit. The UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute has issued a request for proposals for research projects to evaluate the potential role of vaccines and vaccine products in the etiology of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. "It has recently been proposed that some forms of autism may be associated with vaccines, combinations of vaccines, or products used in the production or preservation of vaccines, such as Thimerosal, aluminum and live viruses," says David G. Amaral, research director of the M.I.N.D. Institute. "However, there is a paucity of scientific evidence to support or refute the link between vaccines and autism, encephalopathies or neurodevelopmental disorders. "If such a link were established, future cases of autism might be prevented through changes in vaccination policy. If evidence were obtained that clearly absolves vaccination in the etiology of autism, this would prove reassuring to parents of young children." Project proposals may involve human subjects or animal models, and may be in any field or area of research that addresses the core issue of whether childhood vaccinations may cause autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders. Projects will be funded for one or more years.
Progress Toward Thimerosal-free Vaccines Despite the lack of evidence linking thimerosal with neurodevelopmental disorders, the preservative is being eliminated from vaccines as a precautionary http://www.vaccinebulletin.com/151/clin151.html
Extractions: himerosal, an organic mercury compound that is metabolized to ethylmercury and thiosalicylate, has been in use for more than 70 years as a preservative in some vaccines and pharmaceutical products to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination. Although vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and polio have never contained the preservative, thimerosal has been used in vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, influenza, hepatitis B, and other diseases. Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.* The committee comprises experts in pediatrics, neurology, immunology, internal medicine, infectious diseases, genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, risk perception and communication, decision analysis, public health, nursing, and ethics. The committee conducted a comprehensive assessment of the scientific literature on thimerosal that included analyses of published and unpublished studies proposing an association with disorders such as autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and speech or language delay. The charge to the committee was to conduct a plausibility assessment with two components: (1) an examination of any pathogenic mechanism(s) relevant to the hypothesis, often referred to as biological plausibility; and (2) an examination of the evidence regarding a possible causal relationship between the vaccine and any adverse events, often referred to as causality.

Extractions: toxics and health health effects neurodevelopmental effects Learning, behavioral and developmental disabilities including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism prevent our children from reaching their full potential. 17% of children in the United States are diagnosed with one or more developmental disabilities. These disorders have widespread societal implications, from health and education costs to the repercussions of criminal behavior. Though trends are difficult to establish with certainty, there is a growing consensus that learning and behavioral disorders are increasing in frequency. These disabilities are clearly the result of complex interactions among genetic, environmental and social factors that impact children during vulnerable periods of development. Research demonstrates that pervasive toxic substances, such as mercury, lead, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, solvents, and others, can contribute to neurobehavioral and cognitive disorders.
