Is help available? RSD/CRPS is a chronic condition characterized by severe burning pain, pathological changes in bone and skin, excessive sweating, tissue swelling, and extreme sensitivity to touch. The syndrome is a nerve disorder that occurs at the site of an injury (most often to the arms or legs). It occurs especially after injuries from high-velocity impacts such as those from bullets or shrapnel. However, it may occur without apparent injury. The condition called "causalgia" was first documented in the 19th century by physicians concerned about pain that Civil War veterans continued to experience after their wounds had healed. Doctors often called it "hot pain," after its primary symptom. Over the years, the syndrome was classified as one of the peripheral neuropathies, and later, as a chronic pain syndrome. Currently, there are two types of CRPS that are differentiated-type I and type II. Both types share the same basic set of symptoms, but have one distinct difference: type I (previously referred to as RSD) describes cases in which there is no nerve injury, while type II (formerly called causalgia) refers to cases in which a distinct nerve injury, for example from a gunshot wound, has occurred

Extractions: Physicians use a variety of drugs to treat RSDS. Elevation of the extremity and physical therapy are also used to treat RSDS. Injection of a local anestheticis usually the first step in treatment. TENS (transcutaneous electrical stimulation), a procedure in which brief pulses of electricity are applied to nerve endings under the skin, has helped some patients in relieving chronic pain. In some cases, surgical or chemical sympathectomy interruption of the affected portion of the sympathetic nervous system is necessary to relieve pain. Surgical sympathectomy involves cutting the nerve or nerves, destroying the pain almost instantly, but surgery may also destroy other sensations as well.

A: Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a pain syndrome following an injury in which ones nerves have been damaged or traumatized in the context of a sometimes more significant injury. The mechanism by which the injury causes pain is unclear. In the spectrum of kinds of pain, the pain that results from RSD is chronic, often burning, and constant. Even minimal contact with ones skin often sets off an intense wave of pain disproportionate to the degree of contact. It does not respond to the usual kinds of medications used to treat pain. Individuals with RSD often have a great deal of difficulty being properly diagnosed and are sometimes wrongly labeled as malingerers or accused of drug-seeking behavior. Treatment is usually on an outpatient basis and varies but can include: local anesthesia directed at the source of the pain physical therapy electrical stimulation of the nerve root

Attending a support group can be extremely beneficial for anyone who suffers from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or their family members and their friends. The support group is an excellent way of educating oneself about RSD, keeping up with the latest advances in treatment, not only through written material which might be available but also by meeting and sharing with others who are dealing with the same disease. Through support group meetings people can exchange valuable pain management techniques, make new friends and listen to guest speakers on a wide variety of topics such as medications, alternative medicine, physical therapy, legal and insurance issues and many other topics. Family and friends of RSD patients can share and compare their coping skills and mechanisms. Most importantly, group members learn that they are not the only ones going through the pain and exhaustion of RSD; they discover that their pain is real and appropriate treatment is available for this disease. The Greenville RSD Support Group meets the first Thursday of every month, 6:00 P.M. at St. Francis Hospital's Bernadine Center.
