Rather, they will feel as though they have not slept well. These arousals can occur anywhere from five times an hour up to more than 50 times an hour, depending on the severity of movement. As mentioned earlier, leg movements in PLMD are typically an upwardly flexed big toe and ankle. Sometimes the hip and knee are flexed and tightened as well.

No one knows exactly why restless leg syndrome occurs. People who suffer from restless leg syndrome have uncontrollable urges to move their legs. Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a condition in which the person develops an urge to move in order to relieve discomforting symptoms or sensation, usually arising in the legs. Although physicians use the term "restless", most people with the condition describe it more as a tenseness, tightness or creepy - crawly or burning feeling. Usually the sensation is most severe in the evenings and brought on by rest or relaxation, and relieved by movement including stretching, massaging, bicycling the legs or walking about. While taking Roxicet for some discomfort for cracked ribs, I discovered that it helps the spasms considerably. I only take it at night. Hot baths help too, but it is annoying when I have to take hot baths at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. Do you have any information on this condition? A: Restless leg syndrome, (RLS), is one of those very annoying problems that is not life threatening but drives a person crazy. (It seems like many of the questions I get for the column fall under that category!) Although fairly common, affecting about 10-15% of people, RLS is poorly understood. Patients describe very unpleasant sensations as being creepy-crawly, jittery, tingly, or burning pain. These feelings occur mainly in the legs, especially the calves, but occasionally the arms may also be involved. Lying in bed or sitting in a car or theater can bring the symptoms on, and moving around, such as stretching, pacing the floor, or cycling seems to provide some relief. Massaging the legs or hot baths also may be soothing.

I read another article about this syndrome that told of a tonic called Dr. Johnís for Quiet Leg. I asked my son-in-law, a pharmacist, and my doctor, previously a surgeon in Philadelphia now practicing General Medicine at the Littleton Clinic, their opinions and both advised me to send for it as the ingredients are not harmful. Thought this information might be of interest to you and your column. I have ordered some and will try it. Sorry this letter is so long. A: Hope you enjoyed your time in Wisconsin. Thank you for passing on a potential remedy for restless leg syndrome. It is a problem that has no effective standard medical treatment. I'm a little skeptical when a product advertises that it has been around for 20 years and is 100% guaranteed to work. Why hasn't its fame spread, if it's really that good, by now? Good luck with it!

These feelings happen during rest or sleep, especially in the lower legs, and create an urge to move the legs about as a way of relieving or completely getting rid of these feelings. If a person with restless leg syndrome tries to hold the legs still and not move them, the feelings only seem to get worse. Restless leg syndrome does not cause any damage to one's health, but it very often leaves the sufferer feeling drowsy during the daytime from not getting a good night's sleep. People who have severe restless leg syndrome may feel a kind of spastic flexing of their hips, knees and ankles when they lie down, as well as leg pains in the morning after they get out of bed. While restless leg syndrome can be a problem at any age, it seems to be most serious in people who are middle-aged and older. The exact cause of restless leg syndrome is unknown. There may be many different causes, including important underlying nutritional issues which will need to be resolved before symptoms improve. RLS tends to run in families.
