A spine with scoliosis has abnormal curves with a rotational deformity. This means that the spine turns on its axis like a corkscrew. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine which may have its onset in infancy but is most frequently seen in adolescence. It is more common in females by a 2:1 ratio. However, when curves in excess of 30 degrees are evaluated, females are more frequently affected by a ration of approximately 8-10:1. In most cases, the scoliosis is idiopathic (80% of cases), meaning that it is not known what has caused the curvature to occur. It is not caused by having poor posture or carrying a heavy book bag and in most cases, if detected early, it can be treated and does not cause any permanent problems or disabilities. Adolescents are the most common age group to have idiopathic scoliosis, and it usually begins between the ages of 10 and 14. While it occurs about equally in both boys and girls, girls are much more likely to have a progression of the curve that requires treatment. Still, only about 10% of children with scoliosis require corrective treatment (bracing or surgery). The rest (90%) will not require treatment and will have no long lasting effects or symptoms from the curve.

I saw all types of doctors, chiropractors and alternative health practitioners who I thought might be able to help me. It worked. I had to see a lot of people and waste a lot of money on treatments that didn't help and some that made me worse, but in the end I did find people and books that helped my scoliosis a lot. The books on scoliosis and exercises were hard to find, but they do exist. Now my days are generally pain free and most of my spinal curve is gone. Another option is an evaluation by a neurosurgeon with a similar area of expertise. I would suggest that you contact the medical staff office of your local hospital or call the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery or Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin asking for an appointment with their physicians who specialize in diseases of the spine.

She had no neurologic complaints. Her birth, medical, and developmental history were all unremarkable. Her father has a vague history of spinal curvature. PHYSICAL EXAM: Physical examination was significant for a moderate left thoracic rib prominence as well as absent abdominal reflexes in the upper and lower quadrants on the left side. XRAYS: A 24 degree left thoracic curve from T5 - Tl1 was noted on scoliosis spine films.With the asymmetric abdominal reflexes and high thoracic left curve she was sent for an MRI scan. This revealed a large syringomyelia with dilatation in the lower cervical and upper thoracic area. Also noted was an Arnold-Chiari malformation. TREATMENT: She was referred to a neurosurgeon who performed a posterior fossa decompression. She tolerated this well.

Girls are four times more likely than boys to have it, and it is much more likely to progress and require treatment in girls. What is this mystery problem? Scoliosis is curvature of the spine to the side, with twisting (something like a corkscrew). The ribs on the side toward the curve become pushed together, and on the other side they're spread apart. Mild scoliosis is barely noticeable. But when it becomes severe, it can cause back pain, fatigue, nerve problems, disfigurement, and heart and lung problems if these organs are crowded into too little space. How is scoliosis diagnosed? Scoliosis usually appears in late childhood or the early teens. It can progress rapidly during the growth spurt, so about half of US states require screening beginning in fifth or sixth grade. Curvature of the vertebrae may be visible. One shoulder blade is often more prominent than the other. One shoulder or hip may be higher. The body may tilt to one side. When the person leans forward, the ribs may form a hump. How is scoliosis treated?
