The original codes are often important because they cannot be simply translated into modern equivalents. Each of today's codes has a number of earlier codes that match it, and each of the earlier codes included more than one of today's codes. There is simply no one-to-one correspondence. The pedigree itself must be consulted, and in some cases a chromosome count is needed to resolve the matter.
