Extractions: ADHDNews.Com By Brandi Valentine Since 1995 Thanks to Mike Savoy and AWAKE for sending me this valuable information on Special Education Resources by State. In 1995, I was a single mother with an undiagnosed ADHD child. Every day was a battle. My son's struggles with ADHD, the abusive treatment he was receiving from the hands of the "trained professionals" at his school, the lack of support from the medical community and my family, drove me to search for knowledge as well as for a way to protect my son's rights. What I found was very little. My frustrations eventually drove me to the internet. I created a web page about my experiences and what I had learned from them. I also created a place for parents in similar circumstances to post their challenges and issues and provided a forum for them to exchange information. Eventually, as information became available, I did my best to get it out to parents so that their children would not have to suffer as my son did. I never imagined that nine years later, the need for information would be as great if not greater than it was in 1995. Today, there are literally dozens of sites designed to help parents with ADD/ADHD, co-existing disorders, special needs and behavioral issues. Many of these sites are provided by medical professionals and others much more qualified than I am. That, along with real life issues such as my own health, caring for my parents and the transition of my children from teenagers to adults leaves me with less and less time to devote to my site the time and energy that my readers deserve.
Extractions: Kids Who Thrive "Outside the Box!" is produced by Laurie Shagberg, a teacher who didn't believe in ADHD until her son was diagnosed with it. She has put together an excellent resource, with an unusual depth of understanding on the subject. Both parents and teachers can gain a lot from this site. Be sure to check out the message boards to read other people's comments and questions. The Life With ADHD section is full of anecdotes from teachers and parents of kids with ADHD, as well as a few insightful ones from kids who grew up living with ADHD. This is a site worth bookmarking and coming back to for inspiration from time to time.

Extractions: "Every year the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) receives thousands of requests for information about the education and special needs of children and youth with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). Over the past several years, ADD has received a tremendous amount of attention from parents, professionals and policymakers across the country so much so, in fact, that nearly everyone has now heard about ADD or ADHD. While helpful to those challenged by this disability, such widespread recognition creates the possibility of improper diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Now, more than ever, parents who suspect their child might have ADD or ADHD and parents of children who have already been diagnosed with the disorder need to evaluate information, products, and practitioners carefully." National Information Center for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (add-adhd, ADHD, AD/HD) is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in both children and adults. Many of these individuals were previously labeled hyperactive or minimally brain damaged. According to the American Psychiatric Association, it is estimated that there are approximately 1.6 to 2 million people who have this disorder.
