Things have changed. More than 20 years of war have left the dramatic countryside peppered with landmines and reduced many of the finest monuments and minarets to rubble. The poverty left in war's wake has taken an impossible human toll and encouraged the theft and sale of priceless national treasures. What cultural artefacts remain are at the mercy of whichever disorganised group happens to patrol the local streets. When the Taliban, an orthodox Muslim faction with harsh interpretations of Islamic law and conduct, had control of the country between 1996 and 2001, having fun was branded as evil, women were banned from school and work, forcibly veiled and brutally punished for 'crimes' such as going to market without a male relative in tow. Men didn't have it much easier, as everyone was kept under close watch by a skittish and heavily armed military theocracy that could not find legitimacy abroad. Devastating earthquakes in 1998 and 1999 didn't help the situation. Still, although a risky venture, it was possible to visit what many say is among the most beautiful places on Earth. The Taliban, which allowed Afghanistan to become a haven for terrorists such as wealthy Saudi exile Osama bin Laden, became the focal point for the West's wrath because of suspected involvement in the September 11 attacks on the USA's World Trade Center and Pentagon. Five weeks of US bombing and logistical support helped the Northern Alliance, a confederation of militias and sometimes dubious warlords backing the UN-recognized government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani, to move into the capital, Kabul, on November 12. Women were allowed to work again and venture outside without their burquas, men could shave and both were able to dance to music - simple pleasures that have earned the wild-card Alliance some support as their military campaign moves forward.

It has produced beautiful buildings, decorative tiles and mosaics, skillfully woven rugs and carpets, and has a long tradition of poetry and song. Its capital Kabul (now largely in ruins) was once greatly admired for its architecture. But the most important thing to know about it is that its position on trade routes between the Far East and Asia and the Middle East and Europe, and its location between the competing British and Russian Empires, has meant that for centuries many different countries tried to gain power and influence here. In December 1979, 100,000 soldiers from what was then the Soviet Union entered the country to support an unpopular national government. Conservative rural tribesmen ( mujahadeen ), supported by the USA and Pakistan, fought against them. The Soviet troops could not defeat the mujahadeen and left Afghanistan in 1989, but fighting continued between different Afghan groups. In 1996 the

After 2000 bc successive waves of people from Central Asia moved into the area. Since many of these settlers were Aryans (speakers of the parent language of the Indo-European languages), a people who also migrated to Persia (now Iran) and India in prehistoric times, the area was called Aryana, or Land of the Aryans. By the middle of the 6th century bc the Persian Empire of the Achaemenid dynasty controlled the region of Aryana. About 330 bc, Alexander the Great defeated the last Achaemenid ruler and made his way to the eastern limits of Aryana and beyond. After his death in 323 bc several kingdoms fought for control of his Asian empire. These kingdoms included Seleucids, Bactria, and the Indian Mauryan Empire. Afghanistan as early as 100,000 BC. The earliest definite evidence of human occupation was found in the cave of Darra-i-Kur in Badakhshan, where a transitional Neanderthal skull fragment in association with Mousterian-type tools was discovered; the remains are of the Middle Paleolithic, dating about 30,000 years ago. Caves near Aq Kopruk yielded evidence of an early Neolithic culture (c. 90006000 BC) based on domesticated animals. Archaeological research since World War II has revealed Bronze Age sites, dating both before and after the Indus Valley (or Harappan) civilization of the 3rd to the 2nd millennium BC. There was trade with Bronze Age Mesopotamia and Egypt, the main export from the Afghan area being lapis lazuli from the mines of Badakhshan. In addition, a site with definite links to the Harappan civilization has been excavated at Shortugai near the Amu River, northeast of Konduz.

The territory has always been an important link between the Middle East and civilisations in India, Central and Eastern Asia. Control of Afghanistan has always been deemed essential to the dominant regional power of the day: much of Afghan history concerns the efforts of the fractious, rebellious indigenous tribes to assert their independence. In the late sixth century BC, much of the country was absorbed into the Persian empire of Darius the Great. However, plagued by constant uprisings, the Persians never established effective control; neither did the Greeks, who under Alexander the Great, arrived 200 years after their comprehensive victory over the Persians. From AD 50 onwards, Bhuddist culture was established in Afghanistan under the rule of the Kushans, which lasted until the turn of the fifth century (the famous giant statues of Buddha destroyed by the Taleban in 2001 dated from this period). By AD 550, the Persians were once again the dominant power in the region. Yet a far more important influence which emerged around this time was Islamic religion, which was introduced by Arabs and supplanted the existing dominant Zoroastrian creed. During the tenth and 11th centuries, Afghanistan became a major centre of Islamic power and civilisation under the Ghaznavid dynasty. Their rule was finally brought to an end by the Mongol warlord Genghis Khan, who invaded in 1219. The Mongols destroyed most of the sophisticated irrigation system (traces of which can still be seen today) which had rendered much of the country highly fertile and prosperous; the majority of it was turned into, and remains, permanent desert.

The former Duke faculty member has been there for five decades, before the chaos, when Kabul was a sophisticated place, when universities thrived, political dissent was open, and women were formidable activists. "In the 1960s, the country made a strong movement toward development, meaning road building, communications, and education," says Dupree. "This was very successful. People were going around the world to learn the professions. There were thousands of engineers, many intellectuals. Millions of dollars were coming in through foreign investment from the Germans, the Russians, the Indians, and others. There were jazz clubs, nightclubs, great restaurants of all kinds. Women had come out of the home and could move about in the public sphere. They wore the veil, but on a voluntary basis."

It is also interesting to note that those who came to Afghanistan rarely managed to hold on to their victories or keep the land under their possession for long. Because of its strategic location, some times Afghanistan became a buffer between two hostile nations. It happened during the Mughal and the British rule. Some times it also provided sanctuary to the fleeing rebels or the vanquished rulers from the central plains of India. It happened many times during the Muslim and Mughal rule. At the height of its glory, the British army fought two serious wars in Afghanistan. Both times they suffered heavy causalities. References Maps News Other than a few kilometres across a bridge from Uzbekistan, there are almost certainly no functioning Afghan railways today. The country is unusual in that over the years its leaders have often pursued a strategy of opposing railway construction, instead preferring to preserve the country's natural isolation. A number of railways were built towards the country, only to stop short of the border. Despite this antipathy to railways the country has had at least five short lines in the past. This is a summary of what I have been able to find out about the Afghanistan's railways, including those that were only planned as well as those that were built. Even when the lines were operational the region's isolation made details of what existed unclear. The information is supplied in good faith, but I can offer no guarantees that it is correct. It is far from complete. Much information has been gathered from secondary sources, and I have no plans to visit the region.

Extractions: King Zahir Shah ruled Afghanistan for 40 years, from 1933 to 1973. He was not regarded as an inspired or imaginative leader, and indeed he hardly led at all, preferring to take it easy and to let the tribes govern themselves. Not much good was said about Zahir Shah at that time, but today almost all Afghans long for his return, considering what happened after he was removed from power. In about 1955, the Government of Afghanistan approached the United States of America for military assistance. Afghanistan wanted not only weapons but also to send her officers to the United States for military training. President Eisenhower considered this request but rejected it. Eisenhower said that Afghanistan was too far flung in location. American interests did not extend that far. Every country was asking for hand-outs, and the line had to be drawn somewhere. Eisenhower decided to draw the line at Afghanistan. In 1973, King Zahir Shah decided to take a holiday in Italy. While away on vacation, his cousin, Daud Khan, who was also the prime minister, decided to seize power. King Zahir Shah did not return to Afghanistan and did not contest the matter. He remains in Italy with his two sons, Ahmed Shah and Nadir Shah, to this day.
