Meet Lorraine: Interview possible by incorporating culturally specific traditions and capture dialogue makeher my favorite author. she seamlessly threads African American folk culture http://www.twbookmark.com/features/plainfolks/meet_lorraine/interview.html
Extractions: A Conversation With Lorraine-Johnson Coleman... 1. What is the inspiration for your characters? Is there really an Aunt Maribelle? The characters in the "kinfolks"section of Just Plain Folks are based on family members that I know and love. Naturally, I have changed the names to protect the guilty. Other characters in the book are based on a combination of research, conversations, anecdotes as well as, my own fancy. Although this is definitely a work of fiction, I hope that readers will not only find the characters and experiences realistic, but will be reminded of positive experiences and loved ones of their own. 2. Does Farmville, North Carolina really exist? It most certainly does, 77 miles E-SE of Raleigh on Highway 264. It is also 12 miles west of Greenville, North Carolina where East Carolina University is located. Strangely enough, I discovered during the course of my work in heritage preservation, that there is a Farmville, Virginia only a 3-1/2 hour drive away. You know, there may be a lot more "Farmvilles" around than we thought. 3. What is the purpose of your afterthoughts?

Article | Psychiatric Apartheid, By Sally Satel There are no generalservice teams, only identity-specific teams. of racism will improvethe therapeutic alliance with the african-american mental health client http://www.sallysatelmd.com/html/a-wsj15.html
Extractions: The Wall Street Journal By Sally Satel "As a member of the White group, what responsibility do you hold for the racist, oppressive, and discriminating manner by which you personally and professionally deal with minorities?" asks a popular textbook for psychotherapists, "Counseling the Culturally Different." Welcome to the world of multicultural therapy. The idea behind multicultural therapy, or "cultural competence," as it is sometimes called, is that human identity is primarily culture-dependent. The theory presumes that if therapist and patient are members of different groups, especially racial groups, they will experience miscommunication and mistrust. The therapist must therefore learn a different set of rules for treating patients of each different race. The notion of treating patients according to their racial or ethnic groups has gained increasing acceptance in recent years. Multicultural therapy pops up regularly on the conference-and-workshop circuit and is the subject of a growing list of scholarly books. It is also an increasing part of mental health training: Only a handful of counseling programs required multicultural counseling courses in the 1970s and early 1980s, but recent surveys have found that 42% to 59% of counseling programs currently require such a course. The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association (which is meeting this week in New York), and the federal government's Public Health Service have all gotten on the multicultural bandwagon, publishing treatment guidelines for racial and ethnic groups.

As an African American, you have incredible riches to draw upon, including a bittersweet history which created a new ethnic group capable of transforming heartache into art." Jewell Parker Rhodes Author Dr. Jewell Parker Rhodes, professor of American literature at Arizona Sate University and recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Award in Fiction, offers help to artists and visionaries in Free Within Ourselves: Fiction Lessons for Black Authors. Not only is Free Within Ourselves a top-notch writer's guide filled with practical guidance, essays, journal exercises and resources for publishing fiction, it is also a celebration of African American identity, culture and art. "Never (in four years of college or five years of graduate school) was I assigned an exercise or given a story example that included a person of color. . While the educational system and the publishing world have become progressively more welcoming of African-American authors, there is still little attention to educating, supporting, and sustaining the writing process of African-American authors," Rhodes explains in her introduction. Now, for the first time, Free Within Ourselves offers a step-by-step guide to fictional technique and publishing know-how, tailored to the specific needs of African American writers.

These writers used the social, political, and religious aspects of the African American experience as stepping stones for poetic expression. Widely divergent styles and subject matters existed within the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance. The jazz and blues clubs in Harlem provided a forum for the emerging Black entertainers and writers who wrote and performed to raise the consciousness of the Negro people and instill pride in their African heritage. As the students do these activities, they will consider the following questions:
