Extractions: Thursday, August 22, was the first day of new era in the reporting of student tes scores in Alabama. The State Department of Education released the results of the Stanford Achievement Test (Stanford 9), administered in grades three through eight; the Alabama High School Graduation Exam; and Alabama Direct Assessments of Writing for grades five and seven. In the past, these scores have been reported in averages, often masking the true performance of students. For the first time in state history, the scores are reported by gender, race, migrant status, special education status, English language proficiency, and economic level - based on free or paid lunch status. "This new way of looking at data will redirect the path of education for years to come," said Dr. Joe Morton, deputy state superintendent. "We've been on the right track with our accountability system, but this puts us on an even better track." Now educators, parents, and citizens will have more detail from which to make decisions about schools and school systems.
