The county was established February 4, 1814 by the Alabama Territorial Legislature, preceded only by Madison (1808), Mobile(1812) and Clark (1812) counties, which had been organized from Mississippi territory. Illustrious American patriot Benjamin Franklin had been dead less than 30 years, when a large tract of land in Northwest Alabama was dubbed Franklin County in his honor. The county originally extended north to the Tennessee River, but a parcel was later divided off and became Colbert County. It is a land that once was called home by several Indian Tribes, most notably the Chickasaws, Creeks and Cherokees.

    Extractions: The city of Albertville, named for one of its founders, Thomas Albert, had its real beginning around 1881 when L.S. Emmett moved there from Georgia and set up the city's first large store. Albertville was incorporated on February 18, 1881 with W.M. Coleman serving as first mayor. One of the worst tornadoes to ever touch down in Alabama almost completely destroyed Albertville on April 24, 1908. The city recovered, and today is the largest city in Marshall County with a population of 17,145. Marshall County is an industrially oriented area as evidenced by its numerous and diverse manufacturing service, construction and processing businesses. To invite further growth in the area of industrialization, Albertville offers numerous benefits. Among them are a favorable tax structure, fair cost of TVA electricity and a large supply of available labor. In addition, there are four industrial parks, which are continually expanding. To assist the growth on industry, the city is constantly looking for available properties to purchase for industrial use.

    Extractions: History of Dadeville, AL The City of Dadeville was first surveyed by John H. Broadnax in 1836, about three years after Tallapoosa County was formed. Dadeville was named for Major Francis Langhome Dade, a Virginian, who was a hero in the Seminole War in Florida. Dade and his command left Tampa, FL, in late December 1835 to go to the relief and reinforcement of Fort King, near present-day Ocala, FL. On December 28, 1835, Dade and his men were ambushed in open daylight by Indians under the leadership of Osceola. One man survived and managed to get to Fort King, where he reported the ambush. Dade and his men are buried in the Federal Cemetery at the barracks in St. Augustine, FL. The Town was granted a charter in 1837 during a called session of the Alabama Legislature. The Legislature passed an act of Incorporation in 1858, providing for an intendant, or mayor, and five councilmen. The charter was ammended during the Civil War, and the town made application for a new one in 1871. "The Dadeville Democrat" announced the re-incorporation of the town on Dec. 4, 1878. The charter was amended by a bill presented to the Legislature in 1891. Dadeville has won lasting fame as the home of the famous "Simon Suggs," a character immortalized by Johnson J. Hooper in his book "Adventures of Simon Suggs and the Tallapoosa Volunteers and Other Stories." Hooper lived in the United States Hotel while serving as circuit solicitor in the courts in Dadeville, and here he made many of his notes for his stories.

    Extractions: HISTORY In the mid 1800's, the small trading town called Silver Run (after one of the many creeks in the area) was identified with the railroad station named for Colonel Arnold Sealefirst as Seale's Station in 1856, and then simply as Seale. The county seat was moved from Crawford to Seale, the geographical center of Russell County, in 1868, and a two-story courthouse was built in the center of town. Soon, Seale had a hotel, a bank, a drugstore, a school, and several general mercantile stores, warehouses, mills, and churches. In 1935, the county seat was again moved, this time to Phenix City. (Phenix City and Hurtsboro are now the only incorporated towns in Russell County.) The courthouse was abandoned as a branch judicial center in 1943. After being used as the Seale High School basketball court in the 1950s, the second-floor courtroom later became a home for hundreds of pigeons, and the building was left to deteriorate. The hotel, bank , drugstore, mercantile stores, warehouses, and mills also closed; most of these buildings have disappeared.

    Extractions: History Crossvile is a small town on Sand Mountain in Northeast Alabama, yet it is very rich in history and tradition. Andrew Jackson battled the Creek Indians during the early 1800's in parts of this area because 250 Alabamians had been brutally murdered by the Indians. Later Cherokee Indians inhabited parts of North Alabama, but they too were eventually pushed out as more American settlers moved in. This area of Alabama attracted early settlers because of the rich soil, nearby rivers and streams, bountiful game and good climate. Most settlers moved down from parts of Georgia and Tennessee to establish the current towns and communities of North Alabama. The little village of Crossville was named by James A. Copeland, because of the many crossroads in the area. In 1888, G.W. Justice established the first business in Crossville, and then in 1903 W.B. Jones installed machinery for his cotton mills. In the middle 1800's mail was brought through Crossville from Rome, Georgia and Guntersville, Alabama by Stage Coach. Soon the town had its first U.S. Post Office, with A.C. Copeland serving as the first Postmaster. The first church to be established in the Crossville area was a Methodist Episcopal Church, called Pine Bark Church. It was formed just before the War between the States. The first Baptist Church of the community was established in 1892 at Union Grove. Later in 1925 several people started meeting at the high school and formed the First Baptist Church of Crossville. A new sanctuary was built in 1926.
