Extractions: Reference: NARP, Renal Review 5 Year Plan, January 2001 The renal program at the University of Alberta Hospital was established in 1962 and is the oldest renal program in Canada and the second oldest in North America. Over the years, it has matured into a fully integrated program providing a wide range of services, primarily on an outpatient basis. The Northern Alberta Renal Program (NARP) serves the catchment area encompassing northern and central Alberta (Health Regions 6 - 17). Services include consultative nephrology in in-patient and ambulatory care settings, hemo and peritoneal dialysis, renal transplantation, acute inpatient care, patient and professional education, research, and centralized program administration. Approximately 56% of the total Alberta population resides in the NARP catchment area, with half living in rural communities. One of the greatest challenges faced by the program is the broad geographic spread of the patient population and the need to deliver services to areas remote from Edmonton. NARP currently operates 12 Satellite Hemodialysis Units and 3 In-Centre Hemodialysis Units.

Extractions: Before the 1960's, a person diagnosed with kidney failure had little chance of survival. When Montrealer Morty Trader died of kidney failure at the age of 26, his family was determined that an organization be founded to raise money so that others need not suffer as they had. Morty's physician, Dr. John Dossetor, told the family about the lack of research into kidney disease and encouraged the growth of this new organization. The Kidney Foundation was founded in 1964 as a national volunteer organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of people living with kidney disease. With offices in every province , the Foundation's activities focus on four key areas: funding research and related clinical education providing services for the special needs of individuals living with kidney disease advocating for access to high quality healthcare promoting awareness of and committment to organ donation The Foundation relies entirely on donations from the public to achieve its goals. Since 1964, our fundraising campaigns have allowed us to contribute millions of dollars to kidney-related research, and to provide a variety of services to the millions of Canadians who suffer from kidney failure and kidney-related diseases.

Extractions: CANADIAN HISTORY ON THE INTERNET In the early 1500s, Jacques Cartier used a First Nations word for village, kanata, to refer to the country he had encountered. European map makers later used Canada as a name for all the land north of the St. Lawrence River. Canada was home to aboriginal peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans, and so it's appropriate that our name should come from their language. The origin and meaning of the name Canada has been a matter of surmise since the arrival of the first explorer. Jacques Cartier, reporting on his 1535-36 voyage, noted that "kanata" was an Iroquois word meaning town, or cluster of dwellings. Other reports have it that early Spanish or Portuguese explorers, disappointed in not finding gold or other riches, derided the country as aca nada or cà nada (here nothing). Yet others have ascribed the word to Latin or Sanskrit. The weight of opinion to date, however, favours the Aboriginal origin noted in Cartier's report. Whatever the source, the Constitution Act, 1867, Canada's original constitution, announced that the name of the new dominion would be . . . Canada.

Extractions: You are here St.Michael's Home > About Us > History St. Michael's is truly an historical church, dating from 1893. Prior to 1990 it was a two-point parish shared with St. George's-in-the-Pines, Banff. St. Michaels served primarily the residents of Canmore and Exshaw, as well as weekend residents and tourists. In February of 1990, the congregation decided that the church needed a full time rector. The Canmore congregation decided to make St. Michael's an independent parish and in August 1990 the Reverend Bryan Beveridge was called as the first full-time incumbent at St. Michaels. Through the grace of our Lord, St. Michael's has moved from a small congregation with an average attendance of 39 persons to one with about 150 families. During the 1990s, the parish expanded the number of Sunday services in order to respond to the interests of parishioners in celebrating both the traditional and the contemporary styles of worship within the Anglican ethos. Presently there is a traditional eucharist service at 9:00 a.m. and a contemporary eucharist service at 10:30 a.m. In 1990 God claimed "a strong, dedicated core group". Now we can say with confidence that a large number of the congregation want to be involved, and contribute their gifts to the glory of God and to the broad range of activities provided by St. Michaels.
