Extractions: Washington, D.C. (Feb. 3, 2003) - Historian Robert V. Remini will deliver the first annual Heroes of History Lecture on Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C., the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced today. Remini, prize-winning biographer of Andrew Jackson, will speak on "Ordinary Heroes: Founders of Our Republic." The event will include the awarding of medals and cash prizes to six high school juniors for their essays on "The Idea of America." The grand prize will be $5,000; runners-up will receive $1,000 apiece. The Heroes of History lecture is part of an NEH initiative called We the People , which is designed to strengthen the teaching, study and understanding of American history and civics. The lecture will be an annual event and carry a $10,000 honorarium. This nationally published lecture by a noted scholar will provide an opportunity for the public to learn about the lives and deeds of our nation's heroes. "A knowledge of history is essential to understanding our present condition," says NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. "Understanding why our nation exists and what it stands for is vital to the state of our union." Under the NEH initiative, which was announced by President Bush in a White House Rose Garden ceremony last September, grant programs will support projects that help schools and universities improve their teaching of American history, government, and civics. The Summer Seminar and Institutes program will be expanded to offer teachers more opportunities to study significant texts. The papers of American Presidents and other important Americans will be made available, electronically, to all Americans.

Unprecedented in size and scope, "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden" explores 200 years of the American presidencythe men and their impact on the office. The exhibition showcases national treasures, including George Washingtons uniform, the desk on which Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and a microphone used by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his radio "fireside chats." The Web site offers users a world-class virtual exhibition that extends "The Presidencys" audience to Internet users, providing a rich and enjoyable educational resource for students, teachers and parents. The site is not a re-creation of the exhibition that visitors will see in the National Museum of American History. Extractions: The year 1912 was a presidential election year, and former President Theodore Roosevelt was again campaigning for the nation's highest office. By the evening of October 14 his campaign had carried him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was to deliver a speech in the city's public auditorium.The time was nearing for him to speak, so he strode from his hotel onto the sidewalk outside, where a car was waiting to take him to the auditorium. As Roosevelt walked toward the car a man suddenly stepped up to him and pointed a pistol at his heart. The gunman pulled the trigger and a bullet burst from the pistol and smashed its way into Roosevelt's chest. His shirt was suddenly spattered with red, and more blood immediately began seeping from the ugly hole. The bullet had come to rest against his rib cage, a mere half inch from his lungs. "He pinked me!" shouted Roosevelt, as bystanders rushed to subdue the gunman, John Shrank. They wrestled Shrank to the ground and then, seeing Roosevelt's bloody clothing, prepared to rush him to the hospital. But they found Teddy Roosevelt a more difficult man to deal with than the would-be assassin. "TR" adamantly refused to go for help. "You just stay where you are!" he thundered. "I am going to make this speech and you might as well compose yourself." Teddy Roosevelt was as good as his word that October evening. Still wearing his torn and red-stained shirt, he had himself driven to the auditorium and there, Shrank's bullet lodged in his chest, he pulled out his blood-spattered notes and gave his speech. "I have a message to deliver," he declared to the stunned audience, "and I will deliver it as long as there is life in my body."

Extractions: Committee Origins and History The Committee on International Relations traces its origins to November 29, 1775. It was on that date that the Continental Congress by resolution created a committee "for the sole purposes of corresponding with our friends in Great Britain, Ireland, and other parts of the world." The members chosen for this committee were Benjamin Franklinwho served as chairman and guiding spirit Benjamin Harrison, Thomas Johnson, Jr., John Dickinson, and John Jay. Known as the first Committee of Correspondence, the committee itself soon changed its name to the Committee of Secret Correspondence. That committee was the first institution created to represent the United States in the foreign affairs field. The Committee on International Relations (as well as the Senate foreign Relations Committee) is a lineal descendant of the Committee of Correspondence. Franklin's committee quickly entered into communication with various persons in Europe for the purpose of ascertaining sentiment there towards the Colonies and obtaining any other information which might be useful in the struggle with England. It even designated its own secret agents abroad. By the spring of 1777, the specialized nature of the committee's work had been recognized and its title changed to "Committee for foreign Affairs." Special problems in foreign relations, however, were sometimes dealt with by select or temporary committees appointed for the purpose.

Extractions: The American Presidency Archives of American Art Recollecting the Presidents An election year exhibition proudly hails the chiefs Back in the old days, when the political conventions still chose the Presidential candidates, Smithsonian curator Herbert Collins would cruise the littered aisles and floors, alert for relics to take home to immortality in the Smithsonians collections. Several generations of dedicated curators have gathered such objects for what is today the National Museum of American Historys political history collection. Here reside mementos of the Presidents of the United States beginning with George Washington. The Smithsonians Presidential connection also includes the immensely popular collection of gowns of the First Ladies, many worn at inaugural balls, which have themselves often been held in Smithsonian buildings. And it was former President John Quincy Adams, elected to the House of Representatives after his single term in the White House, who played a leading role in the creation of the Smithsonian in 1846. After the Smithsonians own inauguration, people wasted little time bringing Presidential items to the Institution. But the accumulation of relics has not always been evenly spread across those who served. In the case of some Presidents, like Washington and Lincoln, the collections are strong. On the other hand, Chester A. Arthurs list includes a fishing reel, a cartoon and little else.
