The Mennonites, named after Menno Simmons a Dutch Anabaptist leader, suffered much persecution because they opposed the union of church and state, and the practice of infant baptism. During the late 17th century, the Amish led by their founder Jacob Amman split from the Swiss Brethren due to differences on interpretation of the Dordrecht Confession of 1632. Jacob Ammans interpretation of this document was stricter than that of the Mennonites. This document endorsed the practiced of shunning or Meidung, and foot washing. Excommunicated members fall under the Meidung or the ban. The members of the church avoided associating with them, and did not eat with, talk to, buy from, or sell to them until they asked for and received forgiveness from the congregation. Jacob Amman believed that this practice should also require that a spouse of a person under this ban should not sleep with them until they repented. He also believed in shunning members who left the Amish church or married outsiders.

We are writing to you because we are shocked and saddened to hear that the Air National Guard plans two new air corridors in which, each year, 2,151 training flights will fly at levels as low as 100 feet-over an area in which approximately 5,000 Amish people live. During the Reformation in 16th Century Europe, Luther and Calvin promoted the concepts of individual freedom and the priesthood of all believers.
