Extractions: NC Aquarium at Roanoke Island Reaches out to Animal Shelters Before Closing its Doors RALEIGH The North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island collected $1,988 for local animal shelters last week, just before closing its doors for expansion and extensive renovation. During the week of November 1, visitors to the Aquarium received free admission, but were encouraged to donate to the Dare County Animal Shelter, or the Feline and Canine Hope animal rescue organizations. In addition to the cash, Aquarium visitors also donated pet food and supplies. Aquarium staff held the pet food drive in order to benefit several other organizations on the Outer Banks devoted to animals. The Aquarium closed at 5 p.m., Sunday, November 8, 1998, for approximately 14 months. When the facility reopens in the spring of 2000, it will be double its present size. The North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island is the first of the three state operated aquariums to undergo expansion. In October, the North Carolina General Assembly approved $30 million to expand and renovate the aquariums at Fort Fisher and Pine Knoll Shores. Construction at the Fort Fisher aquarium is expected to begin in July, 1999, while the Pine Knoll Shores project is estimated to start in September, 1999. In addition to funding provided by the General Assembly, the North Carolina Aquarium Society has committed $3 million to the expansion project.
