The toxicant is passed throughout the colony, killing the queen and all worker ants. Do carpenter ants eat wood? No. Carpenter ants will tunnel into wood, usually soft decaying wood to make their nests. I have a large carpenter ant, but both ends of its body are black, and the middle is red or orange. What kind of ant is this? Sounds like Florida carpenter ants. They are just a different color than regular carpenter ants. Use the same treatment you would for regular carpenter ants. Over this past weekend I noticed that my yard had hundreds of what appeared to be dark-colored, white-winged ants coming out of the ground and flying away. Most of the ant holes had lots of smaller ants without wings around them. It has been wet for about a week now and Saturday was a very humid and sunny day. After it rained that night, these insects were gone and I haven't seen a one since. Does this sound like ants? My home is being treated by a termite service with a Sentracon System and has been under treatment over the last 6 months. Any answers you can provide, or products you could recommend would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

Extractions: by Barb Ogg, Ph.D., Extension Educator Carpenter ants are important in the balance of nature because they burrow and nest in dead trees and enhance decay of the wood. They achieve pest status when a colony invades and damages the integrity of the wood within a house. This fact sheet will explain how the biology and behavior of carpenter ants relate to control strategies when a homeowner is faced with this problem. Description and Habits: The black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus , is the most common carpenter ant species in Nebraska. Foraging workers are 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch and black in color. Another species, the rust-colored carpenter ant, Camponotus ferrugineus , is a bit smaller and has a reddish-orange thorax with a black head and abdomen. The most diagnostic characteristic of all carpenter ants is they have a one-segmented pedicel (the segment between the thorax and the abdomen). The profile of the thorax is evenly rounded and not bumpy. Most carpenter ant workers are polymorphicwhich means they are different sizes. Entomologist refer to larger workers as "major" workers and the smaller workers as "minor" workers. Each colony has at least one "queen," the reproductive member that produces all additional members of the colony. There may be more than one queen in a colony.

The science of studying ants is called myrmecology. These common social insects live in colonies (groups of related ants). Each colony consists of: Queen - The queen begins her life with wings, which she uses while mating. After mating with a male ant (or many males), she flies to her nesting area. She then loses her wings and spends her life laying eggs. Workers - Workers are the many sterile (non-reproducing), wingless female worker ants who are the daughters of the queen. Extractions: The Club was founded in March 1993 by three N-Scale enthusiasts who wanted to be able to share their love of the hobby as a nonprofit group. The name (ANTS) was chosen because it was felt that if you're going to be a bug, be one that goes to picnics. With 4 corner modules and only 3 members, the original lay out was something to see. The club has grown since it's inception and visiting any of our setups you'll be able to note a variety of ideas the members have used to do the scenery on their modules. The main requirement for membership is a desire to model N Scale trains. Over the years the Club have setup in the Lots-A-Shops Events Center for its annual Holiday Season show. This show usually runs for 3 months, from mid Nov. to mid Jan. Unfortunately, we won't be able to do the show for awhile. This is due to the club members having other obligations. For this we offer our humble apologies and look forward to the next time and other shows. We built a train layout for the Alamogordo and Otero County Centennial. It depicts the route going to Cloudcroft from Alamogordo. This layout shows how difficult it could be to get from Alamogordo and Cloudcroft. We have donated this layout to the Sacramento Mountains Historical Society. They are located in Cloudcroft, New Mexico and the layout can be viewed there.
