Extractions: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Study The goal of the current study is to test the effectiveness of a promising new cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) for GAD. This new treatment, which is based on years of empirical research on the nature of worry in GAD, incorporates traditional elements of CBT with acceptance and mindfulness approaches to treatment. The goals of this new treatment include increasing mindful awareness of one's thoughts and feelings, encouraging acceptance of emotional experiences, and promoting action in valued areas of life. This study is funded The National Institutes of Mental Health and is directed by Drs. Lizabeth Roemer and Susan Orsillo. Individuals who have completed a comprehensive diagnostic interview at CARD and who have been diagnosed with GAD may be eligible for the study. These individuals will be contacted by project staff for a second, free assessment to confirm eligibility. Treatment consists of 16 weekly free individual therapy sessions with either a doctoral or doctoral candidate level clinician. Participants will be asked to practice new strategies and exercises (learned in therapy) as homework outside of the sessions. In addition, throughout treatment, assessment of changes in anxiety symptoms, quality of life, and other outcomes will be completed in order to assess treatment effectiveness.

At 26 I finally found out the name "Social Phobia" and that it was medically treatable. Substantial improvement in the quality of life is within the reach of most all with untreated Social Phobia. Current research is being done to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment (onset in the childhood or teenage years is common). Social Phobia is a persistent fear of one or more situations in which the person is exposed to possible scrutiny by others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. It exceeds normal "shyness" when it leads to excessive social avoidance and substantial social or occupational impairment. Feared activities may include most any type of social interaction, especially small groups, dating, parties, talking to strangers, restaurants, etc. Physical symptoms include "mind going blank", fast heartbeat, blushing, stomach ache. Cognitive distortions are a hallmark, and learned about in CBT. Thoughts are often self-defeating and inaccurate.

Saito Therapy is a combination of traditional Japanese Zen meditation and Morita Therapy which was developed by Dr Morita in 1920s. Dr Morita suffered from Anxiety Disorder when he was a university student. He attempted to overcome this disorder by reading books, taking medication, practicing Zen meditation and all sorts of other therapies. But eventually he gave up trying and started studying hard for his exams. He was cured and he became professor of psychiatry at Jikei Medical University. He then began Morita Therapy and this therapy has been accepted as an orthodox method in Japan for nearly 80 years. But despite its reputation and prevalence, it is hard to find anyone who has actually been cured by it. I, myself, underwent Morita Therapy for a total of 4 months and saw no improvement.
